Never used it before, but off the top of my head, JHS' pulp 'n peel sounds like about as compact and all encompassing of your needs as I can think of. Clips sound good, at its base it's a Dan Armstrong orange squeeze (think Mark Knopfler) with an EQ, parallel blend, switchable dirt (with adj. gain), and XLR. All in a 1590b, I think, which I insane.
Honestly, I have those bases covered, but it's on the list to try anyway. Would be awesome to have on the small board. Would take the spot of my 280 comp and potentially 7" wide preamp pedal. I'd be able to fit in more dirt and modulation instead of just the basics.
Totally agree, though I think the trend is more towards less work hours in the week. There are still the workaholics, but the impression I get is that a lot of larger companies are getting more lax on hours. Outside of manufacturing at least. That sector is bat poopie insane. The weekly "Let's keep all the operators here during a breakdown (of 8+ hrs) just in case it's fixed before the shift's end and we can pump out a couple vehicles"...or weekly "on Friday, canvas all shifts for voluntary production Sunday, and do a systemfill afterwards on 3rd, and a 3am start for 1st shift on Monday, all after a mandatory Saturday"... eff that crap. After 3 years of almost constant 20 on 1 day off because of all the volunteers to work those extra days, I'm so glad I'm done with it. Especially because most days were 10-12 hour days.
What's really sad is the volume of people in shops like that that are willing to work 70+ hour weeks...most of the time it's because of a bad home life, or worse (and appears to be more frequently) because they live beyond their 40hr/week means and have to work those hours to pay the bills.
God bless the people that bust their ass and especially those that really have to, but there's not much point to life when you work it all away.
Obviously just observations and opinions, no denigration intended. Loved working with people on the line, but I'm glad that I found a way off it. I don't know how a person can do that kind of work for a lifetime.
