Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

My big hurdles right now playing well while singing and making the lyrics not sound like mumbled garbage, lol. Voice control and my extremely limited range are the next big issues. I've been finding that I have a LOT of issues trying to get to pitch or stay on pitch due to my fairly shaged up vocal cords... so I just shout or growl.

My partner, who's an awesome singer and vocalist, gave up trying to help because they just got super frustrated with how slow it was going for me.

Hmmm. Do you have any problems memorizing lyrics? I have issues there, and if I don't know them well, the vocals come out jumbly and mumbly.

When you get to pitch, try to do it over and over and feel how your voice um... feels when you sing on pitch. You can force yourself into a 'habit' of getting there. I find I fall back on shouty or growly and it takes a lot of work not to fall into that trap, especially if I'm doing it in front of others.

yes.

IMHO it's nowadays so difficult to just do nothing. I love reading, but often I end up scrolling on my phone with the book on my lap. I really need to work on my phone discipline. Phones are the enemy of rest

Ugh…Totally agree…

Also-I feel like my iPhone and my iPad have somehow driven my ADHD to even higher levels of insanity which I didn’t think was possible…

It’s like I can’t just sit and watch TV or a movie anymore…Gotta be surfing the Web or playing a game or something at the same time…

Granted I can do two things at once so it’s not like I can’t follow what’s going on in a movie while I’m surfing the Web, but I have noticed that I have a hard time just sitting and watching things bc I feel like I need to be “doing” something..

Work/life balance has also completely blurred by technology which is one of the reasons I’m about to quit my job…

40-45 hours a week of work is PLENTY for me - My boss works weekends and insane amounts of overtime…I’m sure she thinks I’m a slacker, but working that much is HARD PASS for me on that one…

I guess I will never have a “career” (I’m too old for that now), but at this point I’m starting to not give a f- …

Not sure when showing up and working hard for 8 hours and punching out so you can enjoy your personal life became some sort of Corporate Sin, but BOY am I getting sick of that thinking (Lol-apologies… *Rant over* )…

Thanks! \m/

I've been thinking more about giving my ol pedal board a bit of a makeover but that means looking for pre-amp/compressor of some kind. Ideally with a DI built into it. Not sure whats still around, so I honestly haven't been looking too hard, it def gets a little trickier because I need to bounce back to having a good fretless clean tone too.

Unfortunately I don't have tons of pedal board real-estate so I can't get too crazy, especially because I still need my auto-tune-in-a-box because I can't sing for beans. And we still haven't found a vocalist.

But. About amps. I'm very much in the camp of preferring reliable solid state amps. Tube amps are lovely but not sure I'd gig with one...

Never used it before, but off the top of my head, JHS' pulp 'n peel sounds like about as compact and all encompassing of your needs as I can think of. Clips sound good, at its base it's a Dan Armstrong orange squeeze (think Mark Knopfler) with an EQ, parallel blend, switchable dirt (with adj. gain), and XLR. All in a 1590b, I think, which I insane.

Honestly, I have those bases covered, but it's on the list to try anyway. Would be awesome to have on the small board. Would take the spot of my 280 comp and potentially 7" wide preamp pedal. I'd be able to fit in more dirt and modulation instead of just the basics.

Totally agree, though I think the trend is more towards less work hours in the week. There are still the workaholics, but the impression I get is that a lot of larger companies are getting more lax on hours. Outside of manufacturing at least. That sector is bat poopie insane. The weekly "Let's keep all the operators here during a breakdown (of 8+ hrs) just in case it's fixed before the shift's end and we can pump out a couple vehicles"...or weekly "on Friday, canvas all shifts for voluntary production Sunday, and do a systemfill afterwards on 3rd, and a 3am start for 1st shift on Monday, all after a mandatory Saturday"... eff that crap. After 3 years of almost constant 20 on 1 day off because of all the volunteers to work those extra days, I'm so glad I'm done with it. Especially because most days were 10-12 hour days.

What's really sad is the volume of people in shops like that that are willing to work 70+ hour weeks...most of the time it's because of a bad home life, or worse (and appears to be more frequently) because they live beyond their 40hr/week means and have to work those hours to pay the bills.

God bless the people that bust their ass and especially those that really have to, but there's not much point to life when you work it all away.

Obviously just observations and opinions, no denigration intended. Loved working with people on the line, but I'm glad that I found a way off it. I don't know how a person can do that kind of work for a lifetime.

Yeah, memorizing lyrics is part of it fosho. I've been simplifying some of the vocal parts and lyrics to fit my lack of range and general inability to mouth sounds. I had some vocal cord damage in my teens so it took a boatload of training to get to a point where talking sort of works, but even now it'll crack randomly. -_-

Its a work in progress like everything, I don't doubt i'll get better with practice and training and time, but it bugs me to no end that its something I don't think i'll ever be happy with.

Far be it for me to say anything about anyone's singing, but, now hear me out, you said you primarily scream and growl, yes? That may not be the best thing for the previously injured vocal cords. I'm not a doctor nor do I play one on TV.

Fair point. The trouble, if I understand rutrho correctly, is that ever since their singer left she feels compelled to try because the other members are even worse at it.
