Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

My bedroom (my wife and I sleep in separate rooms due to my sleep problems and the fact I snore like a demon. \m/ \m/) has a black fleece over the window to keep out all light. I have to have it utterly black in there. I can't fathom how people sleep with a TV on.
—————————————————————————-
LMAO…We have a blackout curtain but somehow the cats always manage to f- it up by crawling up in there and letting in the light…And yes, I’m totally accusing them of doing it on purpose…I grew up in Texas so it’s REALLY weird to have it be light at like 5am in the summertime now that we live in Colorado…

I know “They” always say that you should try to “follow the sun” on a sleep schedule, but honest to God I don’t understand how we are expected to do that especially in our 24/7 technological dystopian society (oh sure, plenty of tech is good, but I feel like it easily f-s up your sleep/wake cycle is my point)…

If this were the majority of human history and even up to about 100-maybe even 50 years ago it wasn’t like this…iPad screen lights, TVs, black lights, irregular work schedules all somehow make your sleep life a misery…

And definitely keep doing whatever works for you…

I will never understand how some people can fall asleep instantly…Wife can do it (and somehow probably sleep thru a war), but I’ve never been able to do that (too much life anxiety even as a kid)…

And we have to sleep separately more and more as well due to physical ailments…

Getting old and being a responsible adult with a job and a mortgage really takes its toll on you after a while especially if you have a stressful job and sleep is super important for your health, so I hope you get better rest…

My Dr gave me Tresidone (sp?) and it’s helped a lot, but it’s hard to on wind Esp when it feels like the world’s been on fire for the past year and a half (closer now to almost two somehow :-( )…

Thanks! \m/

Non-Doom Metal observation…

I’ve watched this concert a $hit ton of times, especially the first half up to about half way thru the concert, and while I get that this was just a concept song that was chopped into other smaller songs that were further developed for the album, I will never for the life of me understand why they ditched the primary riff on this song and didn’t put it on the album even though it sounds like it fits with the rest of the final album…

Also…

How in God’s name do you NOT include that weird @$$ downward/descending flurry guitar solo thing that Hammett is doing at the 5 minute mark???…That’s some weird $hit, but it sounds cool and that bizarre unbalanced sounding riff structure between about the 5 minute mark and about the 5:30 mark in this video makes that drop into All Nightmare Long sound A LOT more menacing and epic…

They also should have kept that double bass kick drum in All Nightmare Long for the album I might add…

It sounds a LOT heavier with the double bass kick drum in that song…

As much as I like most of the riffs in this song (minus the borderline atrocious placeholder lyrics in a few places of course), I find it somewhat frustrating to listen to bc I feel like some of the riffs in this song were great, but somehow got tossed…

Wife and I are supposed to see them double headline in 3 weeks (crossing fingers, knocking on wood, praying we actually get to go)…

I wish to God they’d hurry up and send me our freaking tickets…

We have VIP passes and it’s in 3 weeks…

Have sent about 10 emails to customer service this week (okay, it was more like 3 or 4) asking where our tickets are…

Trying to breathe deep and hoping I get to see them for an eighth and ninth time…

Thanks! \m/

PS-Just curious, did anyone here happen else this clip???…The bass solo in this song is always amazing and this isn’t anywhere near the best version I’ve heard them play of this song, but Jeebus I wish I could play as well as he does around the 3 minute mark in this version…

Was watching this earlier this morning with my headphones in and apparently I let out an audible swear bc about a minute or two later my Wife was asking me from downstairs what I was swearing at and I had to clarify it was a swear of awe not an angry swear at work bc I was swearing his playing here:

man I played a gig Saturday with my V4 and it sounded magical until it died after the second song. I’ve had SVT Cl, SVT II and have had nothing but problems. Mostly dying on me during shows.

That's brutal, been a fear of mine for sure. I've had one amp failure, I have no idea how it happened, but was able to get it back running within about a minute or so. Probably was just a powercord connection, but yeah that sucks. Wish you the best of luck. You think you're done with tube amps, or Ampeg? Or just have that kinda luck, I know I do, but amps, rigs, and basses during gigs is the one fallacy to my luck.

Was following along with a tone wood thread yesterday, and realized that I am in a very tiny minority that only looks for a tone that sounds like "a bass".

Yeah that one was odd for sure. What makes me laugh is that there are so few that have 2 of the same makes with same woods and everything, and go "you know what even these two sound different." What sets it off for me, is I don't know how many times people will say you gotta try a bunch of the same ones in the store to find the one that speaks to you...must be the paint that makes em different right?:roflmao:

I think too many people look at instrument production as if it were ball bearings, which I'm sure have their own tolerances.

Had to report on this for you all. Can't speak about downtuning yet, but go get yourself one if this kind of tone speaks to ya. Steal of the century IMO. Sorry I don't have a better pick, but it's the far left. SBMM Ray SS passive.

I know plenty of you love Peavey around these parts - got a question for you. Any of you ever use a Peavey Transtube Supreme and 412MS for bass? Just sold one of my amps (I have a second one!) and the kid said he was going to use it on bass. I was honest and told him it was designed for guitar and might not have the best bass response or be too loud, but it should work, electronically speaking. Just sent him a bunch of notes to try and help him make sure he understands what's up and hopefully keep him from destroying his "new" amp.

But remember that during the Industrial Revolution, factory workers worked crazy hours, like 16 hour shifts for six consecutive days, so when would you sleep at all? Often in polluted, unbreathable city slums.

Not trying to detract from your issues in any way, just showing off here.

I was thinking more of farming and farmers when I wrote that, not late 19th/early 20th century industrialized cities with unsafe working conditions when I wrote that…

You are definitely correct-Plenty of people worked some crazy @$$ hours doing super dangerous work for $hit pay before there were established labor laws, but I was thinking more of agriculture than factory work when I wrote that…

Lol-Please note: I’m certainly Not saying farming is or was “easy” or anything mind you-I’m just saying that people were probably more inclined to slow TF down back then…Probably easier to sleep if you only had candles and no electricity vs now when you are inundated with glowing screens…

I also read this article this week even thought I wasn’t thinking of it specifically when I wrote that comment…

Might be the reason that thought subconsciously registered:

Those sound amazing, but I didn’t care for the ergonomics on those basses for some reason…

Awesome if you like it and beautiful instrument, just not The Droids I’m Looking For in terms of how it felt in my hands…

Thanks! \m/

Did you try it on a strap? Sitting down, most SS basses are way too cramped for me, but great on a strap.

So glad that there are so many options out there for everyone and there's no one right way for ergos and sound.

LMAO-Was literally talking to my friend this week who’s trying to play g*tar about the difficulty of trying to balance an instrument on your leg while you try to play and not have it slide off your leg…

She was having issues with how awkward it felt and my advice to her was to put a strap on the instrument and try standing up…

And somewhat ironically my issue with that particular bass wasn’t that…It’s the pickup on that bass that I don’t seem to care for…

I intentionally picked one up and played one today when I was at GC bc you had mentioned that and I hadn’t tried one in a while…

Unfortunately I still feel the same way even though it had been several months since I had tried one…

Idk why but I feel like my plucking hand struggles to find a good place to really dig in…Had a similar problem on Warwick (Rockbass I mean)…

Apologies if that’s weird, but sometimes I just don’t gel with an instrument and that was one of them…

Also…(Completely unrelated), but I think it’s funny that people on this site censor the word g*tar, but once I picked up on that trend it became a habit that has been hard to break…

Lol-In my head when I see that word censored out I think of that noise/riff/amp scratch sound in Metalocolypse when they censor their swearing with a g*tar riff…

Thanks! \m/
