Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

It was. Not the standard war flick, lots more nuanced.
Following Tendril's theme, bass-wise I got nothin' much either. There was an ad for a shoegaze dream pop band that sounded interesting for a few minutes. Who am I kidding, I've picked up a bass once or twice in the last few months. I'd get bored/annoyed eventually or they'd kick me out for using too much watts/fuzz. FEAR MEEEEEEEEEEE
In the bass department I'm not even bothering with trying to play with other people because I'll be moving out of state next year. I have been practicing a fair amount though, and still taking lessons. Taking up fretless has added some variety...currently having fun playing along with this:
Yeah, no new bass news here. Downsizing (and upgrading) my gear, trying to get back in shape now that I have finished my Master's and have a bit of time. Trying to focus my life - get rid of excess stuff (gear and anything else!) so that when I DO actually sit down and do something, I have no distractions. Going well so far. As part of the process, I had to get my bike (not motorcycle) fixed, which necessitated getting rid of some gear. I'd been holding on to it and debating for years whether or not to keep it, but it went unused. I listed it, and got asking price instantly, which is odd since I've listed them before, far cheaper, and heard crickets. I'm not complaining! Paid off my bike and then some.
Correct. Standard bicycle. No motor involved, besides my own legs and muscles. One day, I'm wanting to do a whole weekend bike/camp trip. It may never happen, but I love the idea. Maybe go for a long ride, stop at various breweries/wineries with my wife (we have many in close proximity, and are lucky enough to have great trails too!), and just enjoy a weekend. We could end up in hotels, if for no other reason than for showering facilities, but the basic premise of a "bikes only" trip sounds fun.
As an old, out-of-shape man, I have a couple thoughts on this:
-My ass would be planning my murder after about an hour in the saddle.
-I have tried drunken bicycling, and it didn't end well. (The "Five beers hanging from the handlbars" technique may have made the situation worse.)
Been listening to a lot of Central Asian "folk" music over the last couple of days. Super cool stuff. Throat singing, 2-string "cigar box" sort of instruments (reminds me of a Japanese samishan).
Also, out in the wilds of TB, I was reading the thread on the sound of the P-bass. There were dozens of clips showing how various musicians got a botaload of tomes. Interesting thread.
And then I did something dumb. I opened a "tonewood" thread. And came out the other side worse for the wear.

I've gone through so many of those threads. I think I'm in the camp of Wood type GENERALLY doesn't matter when you have a solid bodied electric instrument. They are fun just for looking at the comment war though. Regarding this topic here's one of my favorite vids. I'm sure some of y'all have seen it before but in case some haven't...
I'll check that out tonight, a bit too long for work. When I cones down to it, Every piece of the pie matters. I'm in the tonewood is a smaller affecter than all the others. I don't believe you can tell if it's a 4001 or P-bass once you layer fuzz/chorus/flanger over the top of the signal.
Now with this I half disagree, or half agree. I usually can spot a ric even with quite a bit of distortion but P's not so much typically. I'm definitely a Ric-o-file though, despite not owning one... I got to play another bass player's 4003SW the other day and that was sick though.
I can't remember what group it was but their bass player had a single P coil (not as in a 50s style single coil P, but a normal P style PUP just with a single coil as opposed to the normal 2) and it sounded almost exactly like a Ric to my ear... That has nothing to do with anything, but this convo just made me remember that lol. Anyone have any idea what band? I remember them being somewhat avant-garde

As far as body wood goes, IMO whether it's solid or chambered has more of an impact on tone than what type of wood the body is made of.
Fingerboard wood definitely matters. For fretted basses I'm finding I prefer jatoba.

Back when I played harmonica, I remember there were similar tonewood discussions. Many believe, for instance, that a harmonica needs to be made of the particular kind of pear tree that only grows in the Black Forest in southern Germany. You see, the famous Hohner factory is in that forest.
On two occasions where all the prominents of the harmonica world were gathered (players, traders, manufacturers, music press...) a double blind test was conducted, with famous players playing a collection of harmonicas all made the same except for the tonewood and other famous people listening and trying to tell the harmonicas apart. In some cases the "tonewood" was plastic, concrete, you name it.
None of the players, and none of the listeners, could do any better than random guesswork.

I have a bicycle (our national means of transportation) that I'm very attached to. It's like some people here have a Frankenstein bass, well, this is a Frankenstein bicycle. I compiled it from two discarded (but quality) bicycles and a pile of new and old parts.
Funny thing is, everyone I know hates my bicycle. I'm the only one who can ride it comfortably. Well, I'm not complaining about that.
It's well into the evening here now, so no pic. I'll try to shoot one tomorrow.
