Is simply playing along and learning a song by ear considered "improving", I would think it is, due to it being ear-training of a sort.

That's how I do it. Too lazy to practice scales and arpeggios, etc. It works for me.

I agree with 220_Hz's advice on picking songs. I'll add: choose some from genres you know nothing about. You'll take away some valuable skill from each.

Yeah, I have very hard time trying to get scales/theory/Circle of Fifth Level of Hell to stick in my brain, but just playing along with songs does seem to adhere a bit better.

Currently I'm learning 3 Oasis tunes that my occasional basement jam band wants to try. along with 'Jailbreak" by Thin Lizzy.

Dirt/fuzz/distortion/etc question...

Do you think Dylan Desmond (Bell Witch) is getting the dirt/fuzz/distortion/whatever-you-call-it in his tone (specifically on Mirror Reaper) just from the EBS Valve Drive? His board seems to have tons of reverb/delay, but not much in the way of dirt: Invalid Link Removed

I'm pretty sure he splits his signal three ways, if that matters.

Really, though, this is the sound I first think of when I think any analog synth, much less a Moog (first time I had heard one, go figure):



If I could get some people to dance to my music in a similar fashion while I tripped, I think it would be both the most horrifying and funny thing I could experience. I'm pretty sure I'd disintegrate.

that's how I do most of my "improving"

pick songs that sound hard! but start out with ones that you like. You'll likely branch out musically as well : )

I also like playing “easier” stuff that way (lol-usually Rob Zombie songs)…

Good to push yourself with something outside of your current abilities, but sometimes ya just need something that’s shamelessly and mindlessly hedonistic…

Incidentally, I at first misread "horrifying" as "hornifying". That was confusing.

Never heard of them but I'm curious about the Model T clone. Every now and then I get it in my head that I need some sort of Sunn preamp clone.

Same here, not sure why. But in the name of variety I've been contemplating moving my ABM in favor of picking up one of Hilbish's 200w beta amps. The 2 channels is very appealing.

Well, my GC gift cards went to buying a Moog Werkstatt-01 and a Arturia BeatStep. I've got a modeling synth, but this is my first actual analog synth.

Heard nothing but great things about both. I really want one of those werkstatts.

Yeah, I think there’s something up with the whole Norwegian Metal scene and the weather up there…

Cause when it snows I tend to wanna listen to some REALLY brutal music…

It just sorta fits the cold hard indifference of Winter…

Personally I f-ing hate Winter, but if I’ve gotta live thru that cold darkness I want something equally harsh to listen to while it snows…

Been meaning to ask if anyone here has any experience with Gremlin machine shop or their megalithic gain structures?

Looks sweet, love the idea, and I'm way tempted. Don't really need it. But I could see how it could possibly fill some holes and save some space on my board. I've been thinking about purging more than I need to on the pedal side the last wee or so.

Not too crazy price wise considering the 2 pedals that it is, gonna have to ask this in the effects board too.

I have a System Collapse and love it, it's by far the best Rat I've played through. I've only played through, like 3, but still, it's great.

I had a Ceremonial, Gremlin's Model T, and it was great too, but I replaced it with the Correct Sound tube beta hybrid MK-II. https://reverb.com/item/74951-tube-beta-hybrid-mk-ii The Correct Sound is the only thing I can see dethroning a Ceremonial.
