Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Yeah one of the things I did with EQ on this one was to try to carve space for certain layers, though I think if anything I erred on the side of not doing too much of it.

I need to learn how to get Sunn O))) amounts of sustain from my basses.

Either go loud as heck or use a sustainer. There's not a lot of models around but there's a few. I need to get back to working on my own sustainer design, speaking of which...

A cheaper solution that might interest is an eBow, though it's unwieldy with bass due to it being built for guitar string spacing. I need to see if I can maybe open mine up and 3D print a replacement guiding rail. Ah, so many projects.

Steve Buscemi's been in a couple movies I've really enjoyed the last few years. He was a firefighter in "The King Of Staten Island" (and also at one point in real life) and it was a solid dramatic role. He was also in "The Death of Stalin", which was a spoof of sorts of the event named in the title. I'm honestly not sure how much of it was "spoof", though, as I know the reality of that situation was also quite ridiculous. Either way, two very different roles in the past few years and I enjoyed both movies immensely. "The King of Staten Island" was a surprise to me, as I didn't have high hopes, but ended up quite enjoying it. It seemed to be in a similar vein to "Ladybird" which was praised highly, but I felt fell a little flat. Whatever. I got all these movies about a year ago at the local library's surplus sale and decided to binge. Probably haven't watched more than 2 movies since! Speaking of which, I think the next sale is coming up this summer...

So, what is the amp and cab? It looks tiny indeed, but what is it?

Recording this weekend was a lot of fun! The recording technician is a band mate from an old band, so we knew him well. And because the studio is set up for recording live jazz, there were a lot of room mics in place. I believe the guitar was in the end recorded with 8 different mics. The bass went mostly straight into the board from my Shift Line Olympic. But afterwards it got re-amped through this 5 watt wonder with 6" cab. Sounded great! Now we wait for the first mix

Absolutely filthy, absolutely love it.

I think these guys are from Argentina... Been noticing a lot of good doom bands from Spanish speaking countries lately (double horse is another right off the top of my head) and was wondering if y'all have any commentary on that since it's been suspiciously quiet around here lately

So, what is the amp and cab?

Laney Digbeth 500 amp and Orange 112 cab. Dunno if it’s sacrilegious to mix the two brands but I prefer the look of the Laney over the Orange Terror amp with similar specs. It has a few extra bells and whistles but I find myself leaving the mids flat and avoiding the on-board drive since I have pedals for that.

I always feel the same way with amp effects. Had an overdrive on my little old fender rumble and the "scrambler" on my ampeg 210 combo. I like the way both sounded but am always just like ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ why push button on box when button on floor do trick

Yeah it always felt kind of presumptuous to stick overdrive on an amp. There’s a reason there are hundreds of varieties of dirt pedals. I guess not all players are as discerning about it as we are.

Also - toobs. I use dirt from pedals, and entirely SS rigs. No tubes anywhere. Also active basses, and the closest I have to a P is my old Ibby PJ, which is what I play by far the least... And no tort! I don't even have a pickguard on any of my instruments! I'm coming to realize I may be the antithesis of much of TB...

My preamp has a tube and I love my preamp. But yeah. I just need a master volume on my amp, I have pedals for the rest.

I’m with you there. Sold my only tube head last year and have 3 SS amps. Two of them are class D, because I’m a sinner.

I like the recorded sound of some classic riffy/stoner setups - i.e. tubes and a Ric, Ripper, Grabber, EB, etc. But for faster stuff with more changes and progressive stylings, I want a fast amp that doesn’t ‘give’ when you dig in.
