I really enjoyed it. Again, jeebus. If I thought in '89 or so a bunch of metal heads (including moi) would have come to an interest in what kind of is a very intense Vangelis-ish style --I would have told myself to stop taking acid quite so often. In retrospect, it's kind of obvious, but I would have never predicted it.

And how much was recorded simultaneously? (no weird "NON-DAW" judgement, but I'd be mightily impressed if that was all one performance) Plus, did the kitty trigger anything? :D

I know what you mean. It wasn't long ago that if I saw the term "ambient" that meant I would just skip past the album.

Everything was recorded live and improvised, and the vast majority are first takes. I did have to do one layer at a time though, so it wasn't all simultaneous. As much as I want to resist the temptation of Eurorack, the possibility of creating a patch and then simultaneously improvising over it has a ton of appeal. For now, though, I'm going to avoid the temptation. I didn't use many effects in the DAW for this...I mostly did stuff like EQ and compression in the DAW (though I did add some reverb to a few of the layers). Oh and from about 42:24 to 45:36 I use a patch in the Hydrasynth that is a straight up Vangelis tribute, specifically Blade Runner.

That's my older cat, Ripley, and she did contribute! She stepped on the keyboard while I was recording a layer at about 10:52 and I even bumped the volume at that point to help her part stand out a bit.

Hehehe, I want to go Eurorack someday, but I already have several synths I could sync through MIDI/CV if I was confident enough to do a single performance with them. I need to connect most of them into a single board for the current project, anyway. I should probably go whole hog.

As far as using EQ and compression in the DAW, there are few recordings I can get to a "finished" point without them. Synthesizers are almost always going to get some because of the wide spectrum they can occupy, and they're almost always stepping on something else.

Hehehe, awesome. The only randomness my cats have introduced into my recording has been muting tracks when they walk across the board.

Yeah one of the things I did with EQ on this one was to try to carve space for certain layers, though I think if anything I erred on the side of not doing too much of it.

I need to learn how to get Sunn O))) amounts of sustain from my basses.
