Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

I see we've hit 3001 pages! Whooohoo!
Meanwhile, I have a ton going on musically at the moment, so thats good stuff.

I've got like 9 songs I'm working on learning and fully getting down with the dad rock band, I have a couple fully down, but there are a few others that are slower going. All their stuff is in standard or Eb-standard so switching drives me nuts, I have a few that I've transposed to the 5string but its kind of a pain and I'm thinking about rewriting a few. Whenever I get my 5 fretless fixed again, I'll either set it up for A-std or something and I might transition to that full time as I think it might be easier to do it that way.

We're still working on maybe bringing a new vocalist in for the metal band, so I'm hopeful that works out. I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to upgrade the PA in our studio, so it might work out to do so with a new vocalist. I still have one more song to get down for next selection of songs to record, plus we have one more as a band to write. SO hopefully if we can get a new vocalist in soooooon, we can get ready to record album #2 with that project early next year. Our drummer has been playing with another punk band around SJ, and the thought is to maybe do some of our more post-hardcore stuff as another band on those bills.

Music practice:
The instructor dude I'm working with has me going through and learning Texas flood - SRV and sort of studying what is going on and whyyyyy its going on in relation to the guitar melody and chords. And working through the chord chart and relationship of the changes with each other for Autumn Leaves.

Being self taught, this is def interesting and not really something I've done before, so its awesome and a good learning opportunity.

Oh prom, I've been using in-ears for pretty much all my practices for the past month... I'm quickly becoming a convert.

Random question - anybody know any decent gear shops in the Alliance OH, region? Gonna be visiting family sometime in the near future, and am always up for a good gear hunt.

Tonight's song of choice to learn was Carcass's Heartwork. Been about 15 years or so since I tried to learn that one. Surprisingly, I still remembered a good chunk of it! Got it down well enough, I think. Can't nail the speedy part at the end, but I can get it in half time, so that's what I'm doing. May have to learn some other Carcass stuff, since I feel I'm neglecting the Low B on my main player with all the covers so far.

In that vein, anybody know any bands that typically tune to B standard to give me some cover song ideas? Or those that tune to D (or A) standard? My second bass is also a five string and tuned down a whole step for Kreator tunes.

First that springs to mind is Nightwish, but they actually use Drop C. Since that tuning is almost the same as D Standard, I'm guessing you could play their stuff comfortably on a Drop A fiver.

Off the top of my head I think Monolord and Godsmack tune to D Standard, but don't quote me on it.

I would have assumed Nightwish was in standard what with not being so "heavy" and all. But what do I know? Maybe it's time to learn Nemo, then. They could certainly round out some of my heavier tunes with a bit more grace. Thanks for the suggestion!

Come to think of it, they were originally in Drop D and went to Drop C when Anette succeeded Tarja as lead singer. (2009 or so)

You can hear this on older songs like Sleeping Sun, which sounds in D Minor or C Minor depending on when the recording was made.

I think there's a substantial amount of Death stuff in A standard, but I'm not 100% certain of that. Spirit Crusher is a fun one that's A standard.

I'm pretty sure Colin Marston's stuff with Gorguts is also in A standard.

I'm an old-school Nightwish (aka with Tarja) fan, so it sounds like I'd be good in Drop D! Guess I'll be setting up one of my basses for that soon!

I'm more of a new-school Nightwish fan, aka with Floor.

Not just because she's Dutch, she's just so many kinds of impressive to me. In a live setting she's the most versatile of the three, and (a pet peeve of mine) she has by far the best pronunciation of English.

But yeah, there's an irreplaceable uniqueness to Tarja's operatic voice in the band. There's no denying it.

I honestly haven't listened to much with Floor, but I DO remember I vastly preferred her output with the band to Annette's. But neither touch Tarja to me!

I have partaken in Amsterdam. Zero problems or hassle. I once ate too much of a brownie and then burned the hell out of my tongue on fondue later. Fun times.

I think the status is "tolerated" as long as you stay in the correct areas.
I'm still going to play is safe, I think. Saw "Midnight Express" as an impressionable youth.

I do not. Cleveland has the usual big box stores, and a couple of smaller places that are alright.

And thanks for the response to the bass store question. I didn't think there was much of anything in Alliance OH, but then again, I always stayed with my rather conservative grandparents. We didn't exactly go too many places...
