I am a little worried about the jazz bass body I bought that JMac routed for the Gibson Thunderbird pickups. It is that paulownia wood and it is so light like two pounds. I will be adding weights to it like a Boy Scout derby car lol

Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Sometimes I think about getting a small tube combo to play guitar through, and then I rationalize the idea by saying "I can use it for recordings" then I remember I don't really play guitar, and am currently trying to sell the one I have at my apartment.
Had a band practice yesterday and tried the Fuzz War. Man, this thing slays. I've been playing the EHX Bass Muff previously and got lost in the mix all the time (we're a three piece at the moment, still looking for a singer). Now, even our drummer who usually doesn't give a rat's ass about our mix said that I stood out for the first time and he heard BOTH guitar and bass. I can't believe this fuzz gets so little love on TB.
Also, how do you guys do it that your bands are so consistent? I mean, we've been playing together for like three months now and know each other almost 20 years, but every track we do is completely different genre. Our first one is doomy, sludgy Electric Wizard meets Monolord and the second one we've made yesterday is pretty much Kyuss-like straight up stoner. And it doesn't seem to get better, next one is shaping up to be a real heavy hitter, like Bongripper made love with Suma. Kinda schizophrenic

If you go back and listen to earlier bongripper records vs our latest material it's like a night and day difference. I mean we've always done heavy, but the means as to which we write songs have progressed and changed a lot over the years. I played my wife a song off Hippie Killer and she didn't believe that it was my band (Charlie, Burt Reynolds has got poopie on you).
Funny you mention old material. The guitar player and I have been in a few bands together. I mentioned listining back to the old riffs and see if we could retool some for the latest band... Not going to happen. Old material is not worthy of our current preception of good. Many things change in 25 years.

My drummer just got a Fuzz War and we tried it on guitar the other day it sounded pretty awesome. Going to try it with my bass rig soon.
As fars as consistent sound goes, 3 months is not reall a very long time. We've been playing together for 5 years now, and I really don't think we found our sound until maybe 2 years ago. I really feel our last (3rd) album is a really good representation of what he have developed over the years. Don't let that stop you though, you have to keep going, that's how you'll get consistent. at the end of the day I think for my band a little bit of our inconsistency is what makes us what we are....but it's hard to be objective about your own band too.
Just goes to show you, it is more about who is playing. Than what bass they are using.
Yeah, 3 months is pretty much nothing. We're just starting to know each other musically, though we know each other since high school. The good thing is, I think we click together pretty good. I guess if we had a vocalist that would sort of clip everything together, but right now we're having too much fun just riffing out together to have some auditions and find somebody.

Oh snap! I was already planning on going to the Deltron 3030 show here next month, but now I found out before the show Juan Alderete (he's the bassist for Deltron 3030) is doing an Earthquaker Devices sponsored clinic at my buddy's shop. That's gonna be awesome. He's asked for an ampeg rig to play through. Wish I had one to let him borrow so I could tell everyone he played it
