The proper Firewire and Thunderbolt cables finally arrived, so I can hook up my new iMac to my interface. Going without being able to use my recording rig for a week or so is torture.

A part of me has been really digging singlecuts lately. Not sure which part though.

For me it depends on how much they look like Les Pauls. I like the ones that kinda do. I don't like the ones that don't.

Had a good Warp Rig practice last night. We had a lapse in practice for something like 2 months and just started practicing regularly again in the last few weeks. We've been working on writing new material, by roughing out how we want songs to progress feel/rhythm wise and not getting bogged down in fine details. We'll go back later and fine tune the riffs, work on adding some variations and all that. It's been working well so far, last night we finished a second new song we were working on and wrote an entire third new song. We've been writing everything so that it flows together, usually practicing each new song by starting with the end of the previous one. I felt like the demo was kind of all over the place stylistically. Which is fine, but it didn't feel like it flowed together much to me, more just a collection of various songs. This time we're writing with a recording in mind, even if the whole writing in sequence thing doesn't pan out perfectly in the end. Hopefully once we get at least 6 songs down we can start fine tuning it and working towards a proper recording.

If you have any shows in Santa Cruz, we've been looking to play a gig down there. Especially if Folivore is involved.

Pretty sure some of these are coming in close to that.

Sometimes I think about getting a small tube combo to play guitar through, and then I rationalize the idea by saying "I can use it for recordings" then I remember I don't really play guitar, and am currently trying to sell the one I have at my apartment.

Those little Ampeg ones I thought about getting as a practice amp for bass, especially as I'm pretty sure they have a two-band non-FMV tone stack.

If you go back and listen to earlier bongripper records vs our latest material it's like a night and day difference. I mean we've always done heavy, but the means as to which we write songs have progressed and changed a lot over the years. I played my wife a song off Hippie Killer and she didn't believe that it was my band (Charlie, Burt Reynolds has got **** on you).

I agree. New Bongripper > old Bongripper.
So far of your albums, I think Satan Worshiping Doom is the best (well, second to the live version), and I was glad that "Endless" was a continuation of that direction, because that style slays.

Just goes to show you, it is more about who is playing. Than what bass they are using.

They all sounded extremely similar to me, but I liked the MIJ bass best.

Yeah, 3 months is pretty much nothing. We're just starting to know each other musically, though we know each other since high school. The good thing is, I think we click together pretty good. I guess if we had a vocalist that would sort of clip everything together, but right now we're having too much fun just riffing out together to have some auditions and find somebody.

Just learn do the vocals yourself. Don't be like "oh, I can't do vocals." You play a tuned instrument, you're already halfway there.

so, I'll be heading to home tomorrow, Mom's going in for valve replacement heart surgery. Damn woman, if it's not brain surgery, it's heart. Yeesh, the things she'll do for attention.

I hope the surgery goes well.

Hah, after what Relapse did with the Red Fang vinyls, I'm pretty much done buying stuff Relapse releases, as well as any of these bigger labels that are obviously just trying to cash grab. Was able to grab the standard black version from Red Fang in person for $15.

I'm not familiar with Folivore, but our guitarist knows people at the Catalyst and his other band opened for Weedeater and Black Cobra there. So hopefully there's a chance we could get on a show there. I definitely want to hook up a show with you guys at some point, whether it's with Warp Rig or the new band I'm putting together. I'd love to be able to get around to playing with everyone here on the west coast, eventually. I've had good experiences playing in Portland in the past with previous bands.

So hopefully there's a chance we could get on a show there. I definitely want to hook up a show with you guys at some point, whether it's with Warp Rig or the new band I'm putting together. I'd love to be able to get around to playing with everyone here on the west coast, eventually. I've had good experiences playing in Portland in the past with previous bands.

So far our only gig outside the bay area has been the Mojave Desert. I'd like to go up to Portland sometime, though.

Vocals are tricky. I always love the Dixie/Buzzo/Pike style snarl. It's still audible and has balls. My natural singing style is closer to that of an Opera singer. I would love to do some pallbearer style vocals, but I have a hard time focusing in singing and playing that style. If I could do nothing but vocals, we would sound way different. Oh well, it works as is.

If you really want to sing and play, you just have to practice. It will take time, but it may save you from the horrible auditions that will more than likely follow after a Craigslist ad. Plus less members, equals less schedule conflicts.

Someone in your band can do vocals. The main thing is not being tone deaf, being able to hold a pitch. Since you play an instrument and have presumably learned things by ear before, it's actually basically the same skill. You can work on your vocal tone later, and chances are that live it's going to be barely audible. I find ear plugs actually really help with keeping on pitch, vocally, with the lack of monitors.

Lots more people can sing than think they can. You're in a doom metal band, not singing the national anthem before the superbowl.

Yeah. Catapult has a lead vocalist, and the only one I've ever played with who I actually like and who I feel is worth having an extra person in the band. He's a good vocalist, a good showman, plays extra percussion sometimes, is really good as far as vision for how the band will sound, and helps arrange songs. He also does most of the booking and the ******** tasks that go with being in a band, and helps move gear. This makes him pretty exceptional.

Most dudes who advertise themselves as lead singers can't actually sing any better than the instrumentalists in the band can, they just want to be in a band, but can't play an instrument, so "lead singer" is their only route.

Unless you personally know the person that booked the show, don't hold your breath. Whoever booked it probably already has an opener in mind. You can still email the venue and let them know you're interested in opening. It can't hurt.

See if you can find out who the promoter is (usually says on flyers) and contact them. All they can do is say no. You could try asking the venue who is booking it as well.

On consistency... Fvck it, I love when a band can change it up from song to song just as much as I love a band that does the same amazing thing over and over. Theres a little bit of everything in the VEGA album, everything is within the realm of slower mid tempo heavy riffing, but if you can't find a song you like from the riff buffet were putting out, you don't like heavy music.

Joe awesome studio video! How much did you guys record/what's the plans? Sounds awesome, vox too heard some YOB in there somewhere...

Im planning on starting to work on singing and playing but I'm having the same problem as you Joe, can't quite find how I want to sing. Im really want to be the vocalist for Galactic Hatchet and definitely want to do harmonies with VEGA.

I think we are shooting for vinyl. We recorded six songs. 5 will be on the vinyl, if we make it happen. We might do one or two tracks for free on bandcamp. We were thinking of a split 7" might be possible as well. Now we just have to start getting merch and a few gigs lined up. Been using half rig set ups on the last couple shows. Still have to dial in rat with the rig

The prices for new vinyl have gotten stupidly high. Remember when a new pressing of vinyl was the price, if not cheaper than the CD?

I collect vinyl but it's mostly classic rock, classic country, metal and obscure heavy and psych stuff from the sixties and seventies. I'll rarely pay more than ten bucks for a record. As much as I'd like to buy current vinyl, it's hard to justify the cost.
