Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

What's everyone currently GASing for?

I've been eyeing a Stingray 5. When the hell did they become a $3000 bass? EB just released their lineup for 2024, the purple sunset is calling me...

Ernie Ball Music Man: New at NAMM 2024!

the neo pickups are a bit of a turnoff. May need to look into aftermarket options.

I was itching for another Stingray. I sold off an SR5 to fund a Pedulla Rapture purchase years ago and I don't even remember why I sold the Pedulla. So, I was looking to trade for or buy one when the MF stupid deal of the day was a Ray35PB for $500, so I had to try it, especially with their return policy. I was on the fence about sending it back for a week or so until I took some time to set it up and really run it though its paces and now it's a keeper. From all the other SBMMs I've played at various GCs. I wouldn't have ever thought it. But, this one is superb. I am no longer looking for a Stingray.

So, I traded a four sting Jazz for a Lakland DJ5, which I have been lusting over for well over a decade and could never pull the trigger on one. So, bass gas has subsided for a bit, but I still have a MIJ P listed in the classifieds, but I'm not sure what I would trade it for or what I would even buy with the money now, other than more studio gear.

that's a sweet MIJ! I have a '92-ish i think. it was my first bass. I also had a 2002 CIJ P that was awesome. Sold it to my drummer, too feed my synth habit. I also have an MIJ J that i installed some David Allen Js in. Used it for our C# standard and drop B songs. I've owned a couple of other MIJ/CIJ jazz basses, and they were all great except for one the was stupid heavy it was a JB-75 with the block inlays.

The sunburst J is an MIM Geddy, nice bass but I also sold it during my gear purge.

The sunburst P is my first bass, that one isn't going anywhere

Nice!

That Geddy was sweet. I always liked the sunburst version better than the black and white.

I've got a 2023 AmProII P5 that is my #1 right now, which is why I'm letting the MIJ go. I've only played five strings for the better part of 20 year now, but for some reason, I went on a four banger bender, buying up all kinds of basses I don't play. I've moved a few along and after the MIJ P goes, the only four strings I'm keeping are a non-export Aerodyne PJ and an ATK300. I may even move the ATK along if I can find a 305.

Have you ever played the monoblock?

I still own a Monoblock II, and they're good amps but getting expensive, the most nuclear disaster proof chassis ever. I've got a TS-50B head and a Yorkville Bloc 150 1x15 combo that sound really similar. The Monoblock sounds slightly less exciting in comparison. There's a Bloc250 head on reverb right now that I bet sounds great. I love me some Canadian amps, my first amp was an old Traynor Bloc80.

To those of you using big tube rigs to get your sound, how do you get that across live? Do you send DI to FOH and let you cab radiate to the ausience as well or do you mic it?

I feel most club PAs are really good at producing punchy clear bass but the don't get the rumble across as well as I hear it from my setup.

.

I wonder how it compares to the Wren & Cuff version.

Same, that's a sweet enclosure.

I've been lurking in this thread since it started and I rarely post so for what it's worth, I as a random internet person second the other guy and felt it was worth posting that you're too good not to share your gift.

I've barely played in the past 2 years either due to work and after my band Hypnochron went on permanent hiatus didn't really feel like finding new people because I'm old and its a pain in the ass. What little playing I've done is I tried my own solo doom/sludge version of the Royal Blood thing with a POG/Pitch Fork which sounds great and is incredibly fun, just no time with work so far to finish the project. Have about 30 minutes of music finished but would need to do vocals and do the real tracking to put it out. You might want to try something off the wall like that or get a fun synth pedal to inspire you. The bass as guitar/bass at the same time sounds gigantic with down-tuning.

Same here, been doing it for some time. Started out as filling in the mix with rhythm so the guitarist could focus on lead. Then over time, family life really tied him up so between snagging guys to do lead, me and the drummer just started doing duo stuff.

i've actually been playing a lot of synths, and have picked up more synth gear. got into the semi-modular world with a Grandmother as well as a Make Noise Strega and i'm in the process of building out an all Fairfield Circuity synth board (Meet Maude, Hors d'ouvre, Long Life, Roger That and Shallow Water). The guys and I are thinking of jamming again along with another guitar player. we're looking to incorporate more of a psych and experimental feel, and if i can get my way, i'd love to add some a touch of mowtown/funk/soul.

Sounds awesome, I always dig evolving a sound. We never ended up getting in the studio, but anything stylistically different we came up with we set aside to almost do theme like records. If it was good but didn't fit our typical soundscape we'd still keep it around. Helped with experimentation and honestly was good because we ended up doing some jam band, jazz fusion, funk, polished gala's, and blues gigs through the years. Helped keep things fresh for sure. Hell we did some punk shows too. Lots of people said you could always tell it was us, but was wild how varied we sounded.

Don't know about their other basses, but I have a sterling ss and the neo is real solid, honestly I like that bass so much I want to get one that has a 2 band.

Me, I'm gassing a bit for one of those Jackson Ric look alikes, a Troy Sanders jaguar, and one day a wattplower. Oh and a Zoia. There's tons of others I'd like to have, but for whatever reason those 3 are calling me.

I just get the stage volume to where I want and feel the air moving, and let the FOH do their thing. Most times, I recalled the guys saying he didn't have to put a ton into the house. TBH, I'd definitely get the stage pretty loud, nobody cared at the gigs we did. Every once in a while a sound guy would have specifics he wanted or we had to keep volume down.

I always mic'd, and I made sure to bring a bass m8c with me in case the venue did not have one.

In my experience, the problem with main sound coming from stage is that it is less consistent throughout the room. Unless you bring 2x810s left and right of the drums of course. That's one for the bucketlist :D

Thanks! I am currently experimenting with mics. Do you have a favorite? And do you give additional DI signal to FOH? In larger venues I got asked to also give DI "as backup" but was never sure which signal they used in the end.

Just an AKG P2, at show volume, you're not going to hear a difference in mics. I always carried a JDI with me, but i only used it twice i think

some of bands/albums that have caught my attention over the last little while:

the latest from Bushman's Revenge, I love all their stuff.

Another new favorite band, all their stuff is great. Saw them live back in Sep and was blown away. One of the heaviest bands i've seen. Felt like a more psych version of Boris.

Japanese Kraut Rock???

East of the Sun and West of the Moon? All I can think of is Norse mythology. I wonder (and hope) that they have some influence from that. I'm a huge mythology nerd, and have read WAY too much of it lately. Specifically Norse. I'm currently reading the Nibelungenlied, which, while itself is German, is very much an extended take on the traditional Norse Volsung Saga.

Honestly - and thankfully - not much right now. This past week I had some success in offloading a few pedals, and that money's already spoken for with foundation repairs to the house. (Nothing serious, thankfully, but yay for all the rain!) I have two CMC Muffs coming in a month or so, and may get another variety of his Muff offerings if I really like them as much as I like his Civil War take. I may also get another Bass Mountain pedal if I find one for the right price. And one day, I'll finally get an upgraded preamp for my SRX505, but that's been on the table for a few years at this point. But none of it is anywhere near necessary, and I can happily wait. Hoping to keep the trend of offloading stuff for a while first, and maybe even slowly adding more to the "sell" list. My goal overall for a while is to have less stuff and be more focused. Both in bass and life in general.

I go direct and get mic'd if they'll do it. Normally it's just the direct out from the head, though. Depending on the size of the place, etc. I may actually move the master on the head to 4 instead of the 2.5-3 it normally runs at.

I actually prefer a SM57. The sound guy almost always has another one to throw on the cab, they work well and are nearly indestructible.

I played a super bassman 300 at a local shop yesterday. I was blown away at that overdrive channel.

I totally love mine, and I've only used the clean channel 2-3 times myself. That overdrive channel is where it's *at*, baby!

Yeah my bad, meant to say they hooked up to the DI out from my head, but most of the time it was just to help fill out the room gaps n such like what you mentioned. Mic'd cab is better, but DI is fine. I never argued with the tech, just asked him what he preferred and rolled with it.
