Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

I'm definitely a big fan of CMC's stuff. Never played a DA120 or the amp it's based on, but if the quality is as good as the Muffs he makes, it'll be amazing.
Woah, I'm tempted hard by that. I just picked up a Guptech rockerverb preamp and an EQD monarch, might have to grab the cmc. The Monarch edged out my da120 mostly just because it could cop the main settings and didn't take up a quarter of my board. This being way smaller might be a ticket I'd go with.
Been using Sunn amp gain for so long I forgot how much I love my pedals. Finally started using them again last night, I have a pretty unconventional bass setup but it works for me. I wish there were more stoner/doom/sludge bands near me I could join haha.
My favorite band is Admiral Angry and my favorite album is their album Buster. Not stoner or doom. Just pure, nihilistic sludge, so I guess it's in a similar vein. Makes you feel like you're in a paper bag slowly being suffocated. I've been getting back into drone metal lately, Earth's Earth 2 rips. The bass tone is similar to what I'd expect from a grindcore band but honestly, it works. The last true stoner/doom bands I think I listened to were Sleep and Electric Wizard
It's a masterpiece. I have 3 Buster CDs, one normal jewel case, one jewel case signed by their bassist Brandon, and one 1/50 ever made promo CDs Shelsmusic sent out to radio stations to play. I also have a 1/50 ever made promo A Fire To Burn Down The World CD
Also, I don't know if there is any love for Isis (the band) in here, but they're incredible and I recently snagged some rare CDs of theirs from a local record store here. A 1/100 ever made original pressing Mosquito Control CD, a 1/40 ever made pre-release demo mix Celestial CD (Godflesh cover), and a 1/40 ever made SGNL>05 pre-release demo mix CD (also with the Godflesh cover)
What's the "unconventional bass setup"?
I just impulse bought a used BAT Priestess for a decent price, so that should be arriving in the next few days. More fuzz glory whenever I finally get a chance to play again for more than a minute or two. I also managed to find a solid deal on another Digitech CabDryVR, so now I'll have 3 of 4 boards with one when that arrives. Needed something to lighten the mood in my life lately (i.e. unplanned gear purchases) because... (Warning - downer portion of the post incoming.)
Been a rough few weeks here. Multiple deaths in the family, with two more possible in the near future (one very possible, the other unlikely but he's older, so you never know and it sucks regardless), my son got kicked in the head at a soccer game so we had a visit to the ER - thankfully no concussion, but it messed him up for a few days. Then add all the random annual things at work starting to pile up right when I have to miss work to meet all these family obligations... Just too much stuff lately, and not enough bass. I'm ready for things to slow down and be boring again. Boring is good. Boring is predictable. I typically enjoy boring and repetitive. It means things are generally doing okay. Let's get back to that.
Hopefully you're all doing better than I have been lately! I'm trying to get back into good habits as I've certainly slipped up these past few weeks with the extra stresses involved. Back to a workout schedule and my standard "beer only on the weekend" rules to get life back in order! Wish me luck!

First of all, I am beyond sorry to hear about the deaths in your family. We lost around 22 people during the COVID pandemic, some for unrelated causes, but most to the disease itself. The pain never truly goes away, you just learn how to deal with it better. I am glad your son is alright!
My main bread and butter setup is this:
1984 Sunn Enforcer
Powering a 1983/1984 Sunn Enforcer 4x12
And 2002 Carvin RL410T 4x10 cab
The Enforcer cab has punchy lows and a bright tone, the Carvin I use with the horn 100% off, it's a much darker cab tonally until you use the horn. My two main basses are a 2006 Cort Curbow 5 with a custom shop Elysian pickup plus a series/parallel switch and a 1999 Warwick Thumb NT5 I always run with the preamp bypassed. The Enforcer is a tube amp through and through, originally designed as a guitar amp, channel A is based on a Fender Twin Reverb, and channel B is based on a Marshall JCM800... to me, it sounds more Sunn than anything. The Marshall channel is much darker than any stock JCM800 I've heard, and has a lot more gain. The Fender channel can do that glassy clean thing well, but it also has a ton more midrange than any stock Twin Reverb I've ever heard, that and it has a gain control that breaks up SUPER nicely. The way I run it is my bass into the hi gain input, I dial in Channel A to be clean and high volume with a lot of low end, I then dial Channel B with max gain and a lot of lows and mids, plus some highs, I then clean blend the channels, blending in the Marshall channel until the gain is to my liking. This retains note clarity, definition, and punch while still cutting through. I also clean blend on bass with my Beta Lead with a similar approach.
However, recently, I've started using drive pedals again. My favorites for bass are my BOSS Waza Craft Metal Zone MT-2W, Behringer HM300 boosting my ProCo RAT, and my DOD Death Metal FX86B. I have a cheapo Rowin Plexion Distortion I haven't used in ages that I may need to try again for bass.
I will add, the Enforcer has the LARGEST transformers I've ever seen on a typical tube guitar-oriented amp. They're huge. Will Hobbs (the Enforcer's designer) actually uses his Enforcer prototype on bass the same way I do, clean blended channels. The transformers were specifically designed to handle a 200 watt square wave you would never see in a musical application. This thing will probably outlive us all. 4 12AX7A preamp tubes and 4 6L6GC power tubes, also switchable between 100 watts and 60 watts. In 100 watt mode, it can run at 4 or 8 ohms, in 60 watt mode, it can run at 8 or 16 ohms. The standby switch also disables the power amp signal which negates the need for a dummy load when slaving the preamp into another amp/power amp. I always experiment with my tones. Sometimes I'll slave my Sunn Stinger 20 into my Enforcer, or my Beta Lead Into my Enforcer, or my Enforcer into my Beta Lead. So many options! I also have two Peavey Decades I slave into my amps but I prefer my 1980 Decade into my Beta Lead's power amp tonally. The Stinger sounds better into the Enforcer power amp. I have tried the Stinger into my Peavey Basic 50 combo and I liked it in that application too. I have two Peavey bass combos, a 1986 Basic 50 1x12 that I got for free, and a 1982 TNT 100 1x15 I paid $20 for. I also use another fun setup. An ABY pedal splitting my bass signal into my Peavey Decade on top, slaved into the Basic 50, and then the second output going into my TNT 100. The preamp out on the Decade doesn't disable the speaker output so I can run all three at once. I use the Decade/Basic 50 for distorted mids and highs, and then I use the TNT 100 for clean low end.
Yeah, the two that have passed were both in their 90's, so no surprise, but it's never easy. One of the other two is in his mid-60's (my uncle), but just had a surgery that didn't go as well as planned. Should be fine, but will be challenging for a bit. Hoping for the best. The last is my wife's cousin, who has battled various health issues his whole life. He's only 32. Defeated rare brain cancer as a kid, but now there's some link to his current (also incredibly rare) cancer that literally prevents him from eating (the cancer constricts his intestines). He's lived off of a nutrient bag for around 2 years. Short version - he's running out of options, and nothing's working. Amazingly, we didn't lose anybody super close during the pandemic - only a single distant relative of mine comes to mind. I'm grateful for that, for sure!
I won't pretend to have any idea how your rig sounds, as I've literally never played anything mentioned in that description. But it seems like it's amazing!
The DOD Death Metal is underrated in my opinion. I don't use it on bass, but at one point, I had two identical DOD boards for guitar because they were so abundant and just so good for the price. When one of my Death Metals went down, by that point it was easier and cheaper for a local guy to clone it for me than to buy a new one. So that's what I did. That thing rips! DOD/Digitech is still one of my favorite FX companies. I'm pretty sure I have more of their pedals being used on my boards than anything else (I certainly did for a while at least), though it may be MXR these days. But the MXRs are mostly utility types (SmartGates and Noise Clamps) with the Bass Envelope Filter thrown in on bass and the Carbon Copy the gold standard delay that I've always got available, but rarely use. Of course, my bass rig can't blend channels etc., so I need to be more selective on bass dirt pedals!
I'm sorry to hear about those in your life that are struggling. Cancer is, for lack of better terms, a fickle b*tch. I'm glad the pandemic spared most of your family. I'm thankful that I survived since I did catch COVID numerous times, same with both of my parents, who are 60, thankfully they're alright too.
The Death Metals have an INSANE amount of low end for a supposed guitar-oriented pedal. The highs need to be tamed for conventional distortion tones, otherwise it sounds like white noise. Which I love if I'm doing stuff like grindcore and goregrind. Also works for sludge and drone, can get similar to the bass tone on Earth's Earth 2.
The channel blending helps a ton with retaining low end clarity. I want a Sunn Coliseum 300 eventually, those have individual fx loops for the high and low frequencies, you could keep the lows clean and the highs distorted, the EQ on those are pretty flexible too. Has biamp capabilities as well. Those amps are 300 watts at 2 ohms, they're very, very clean, no sort of onboard distortion. My Beta Lead and Enforcer work great on guitar and bass, they have a ton of punch, the lows aren't flabby or thin either. The cabs I have my amps paired with are also fairly punchy.
And now for something completely different. This album is freaking amazing.
