Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

I was over by my usual music store today and stopped by to check out the current inventory. They had these new totally blacked out Talman 5 strings, I thought they were short scales but apparently they're 34".... Weird because it felt like a shorty to me. They still got this old Kramer Striker for 279 bones that felt pretty good, I had to talk myself out of it because, ya know, I already got an ultimate set of tools at home, I can totally fix it...

I have a strange urge to learn "Godzilla" by BOC. I feel it would be a great bass line with some fuzz... Anybody else have any fun covers in a different style than the original? I've also thought Johnny Cash's "Ghost Riders In The Sky" would be fun with a doom vibe.

What me & my buddy do is find something that when time stretched or compressed sounds cool/valid. Usually slowed down for the heavy doom angle. Then we re-record it from scratch using the altered version as a guide. Anything goes!

The first thing that sprang to mind is Fu Manchu’s cover of Godzilla. Not exactly too different from the original but damn does it rip.

I once thought "hey what if we play jazz standards really slowly" and somehow decades later this led to a singer talking me into covering a lullaby sung by a German cartoon crocodile, and me insisting that it's only fair that we do "Richest Man In Babylon". Whether it's doom or just really slow noise rock, who knows...

Believe it or not - I've never heard this version! I like it. Honestly doom was the last genre I ever really got into heavily, and there are plenty of bands I'm simply unaware of. I've of course heard of Fu Manchu, but never actively listened to them. I was thinking a bit warmer fuzz, but hey, that's me.

Speaking of BOC, that was my first ever concert, with Thin Lizzy opening. Also, do yourself a favor, sit down and listen to some BOC for the Albert Bouchard bass lines. Probably one of my three top favorites.

I need to, for sure. It was the bass line that captured me on "Godzilla". It encapsulates the feel of what I imagine Godzilla would be as a lumbering giant tearing through a city with reckless abandon. It's such a great bass line.

I recommend starting at the early stuff, they were a lot more proggy then. But all the releases have something good on them. I recommend just doing a headphone session with a greatest hits list from YT to start. the headphones are a strong recco due to the mixes. sometiumes the bass is a bit buried.

Idk, but "take on me" seems like it'd be fun to come up with a sludgy version of it.

It would be pretty cool to somehow do a collab on something fun, though. I know many of us here are multi-instrumentalists. But I certainly couldn't do a track solo!

I just ordered a refurbished Mac Mini, to replace my bricked old 2012 iMac I used for music production. So this challenge seems infinitely more possible than it would have yesterday.

Funny you mention BOC. We're working on covering Cities on Flame with Rock and Roll. While it will be pretty faithful, my bass is perpetually fuzzed out and we're dumping the original F# all the way down to D#. I'm not exactly sure how my vox will go, yet, since that is significantly lower than my normal yell/scream. It may end up slower than the original but it's really, really hard to make any significant improvements to such a fantastic original. Oh-and no keyboards.

Also...Twist of Cain by Danzig. In F instead of A. I imagine I will be banging away on a lot more root-5th-root chords than the original bass did.
