Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

And then, the thoughts kept coming - "Yeah, but Metallica couldn't pull this type of stuff off anymore, so that would be a waste like so many other bands with this idea." Which then led to me thinking about bands who HAVE re-recorded material and had it go well. So, anyway, it eventually led to this question - if you had to pick one band to re-record (okay, cover...) another band's classic album, what would your choices be? I'm specifically looking for a band that could keep the same energy/feel/etc., but with updated modern production. Obviously, many of these will be similar bands anyway, but I thought it would be a fun discussion regardless. I know re-recordings are often controversial, and I'm not generally a fan, but there have been a few that I really do enjoy and see the benefit in.

TL;DR - Which current bands do you think could do a solid job of pulling off another band's "classic" album? I'll start with the song/album that got me on this idea, and throw in a few others:

Metallica's Master of Puppets - as played by Testament (I thought maybe Overkill, too, but Testament came to mind first, mostly for DiGiorgio's bass skills)

Back In Black - as played by Accept (and the Six Feet Under AC/DC covers can be forgotten in my opinion)

Painkiller - as played by Primal Fear (who are essentially Judas Priest 2.0)

I totally understand the deficiencies of Master Of Puppets, but to my ears, Back In Black is perfect, in terms of hard rock(I never considered it to be a “metal” album), and one of, if not the, shining moments of Lange’s producing career. Everything is in place, and it still holds up. What could be improved?

Nothing comes to mind, honestly! I just think Back In Black would be interesting played by Accept. Now I'll have to listen to that album again some time soon... Sigh... Such a terrible thing to be compelled to do!

I thought the same, but you saw the only ones I could really come up with!

I think Sodom would do an interesting version of Motörhead (which I know they have covered in the past), but I don't know that I'd say it's quite the same vibe. Similar attitude and all, but stylistically, both pretty distinctively different.

Hey Doomers, long time. Thought I'd check-in and see what's happening.

I went back to basics over the past couple of years and re-learned bass from the begining. Worked on lots of theory and ear-trai ing as well. It's been a real revelation. I feel like I finally understand this instrument lol. Not really playing in a band at the moment, not sure I want to, but I'd be interested if anyone is interested in some remote collabs.


now the important stuff. new board and home office setup. More synthy, glitchy over-the-topness than usual 😁

oh yeah, got me a couple of hollow bodies and I only play flats and tapes now...so yeah

I have a long term goal to go back and learn the actual theory of bass/music. I'm pretty good with the mechanics, and I think I have a decent ear for what works, but I'd love to actually know what I'm doing and why. More power to you.

Hey! The guy in profile on the left stole my nose!

Oh wait, my nose is still on my face. Must be a copy. It's a pretty good imitation of my hair from 25 years ago, too. For starters, it's all over his head.

I went to the guitar show today. I resisted buying the $30,000 stereo, no matter how cool it was. My wife would have straight up murdered me for getting it.

I also resisted buying the Gibson 6/4 double neck, and the Ibanez Iceman bass. Still kind of wondering if I should have grabbed the latter.

I couldn't resist grabbing a Maxon SD-5 Double Sound fuzz/wah. It came with the box, the original bag and the manual, etc. Very nice wah, and a Shin-ei style fuzz. Not quite Super-Fuzz, but very close. It will do unity gain, which is kind of unusual for a lot of older fuzzes. Damn thing looks like it's never been used at all. Poor thing sat neglected for 50 years or so with no one stomping on it. I have a feeling I'll be stomping on it quite at bit!

Yeah, an ENGL and Peavey for Gatecreeper. They sounded pristine. They actually sounded better than Deafheaven. Their sound dude was on it.

Well, technically he was giving me a discount because of the guitar show. When they were new, they were $2000, so equivalent to about $20K at the time. As a result, they made very few of them. Probably around a 1000 or so when you include every version they made. So, it was high end even its day, and this one has been gone through and had anything that wasn't perfect repaired. I'm not saying it's worth that, but those are the prices they actually go for.
