Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

I'm confused by this. Is he sending the Quilter and Bergantino through those power amps?
Whatever he's doing, that looks punishingly loud.
So, my band has a song they want me to use a wah on. I have a couple of wahs, but they really seem to be poorly voiced for fuzz wah. They all cut the bass way out, and seem to generally only have a narrow band fit for bass duty. Anyone have some favorite bass wah recommendations? Extra plus if it's a fuzz/wah.
Wish I could help you, but no. I'm not coordinated enough to use a wah and play at the same time. I'd likely fall into my rig! But if you need an envelope filter, I have some input. I once tried the Ibanez Weeping Demon, which I hear is generally well-regarded. But I'm not coordinated enough to use the wah and play bass simultaneously. Other than that, my gut says try the Geezer wah? Good luck with the search!
Dunlop Bass wah is probably all you need, you can adjust the center frequency which helps. I only used it for a minute in an old band but it worked fine. I'm all about env. filters now because I don't need manual sweep foot control. If I did I'd just get another Dunlop.
With an album nearly complete (guitarist just wants a few more overdubs and we might do an alternate version of one song with a guest vocal), time to ask ourselves... physical release or just put the tracks online.
How would you make this decision in this genre? Any threshold of people caring or popularity, or just a threshold of willingness to lose money?

I haven't tried it, but have heard good things about the Justin Chancellor Fuzz Wah.
What I have tried is a Dunlop Mini Bass Wah into a Green Russian and that was majestic, just never had a use for it in my band so I sold it.
This applies to basically anything. If we didn't get CDs made (2 separate times) I'm not sure if we'd even break even, and we're just 2 dudes not a full band. We do Distro Kid and Bandcamp Pro. We sold a few CDs at most, but they were intended as freebie handouts and guerilla drops/marketing anyway. Bandcamp is probably the most direct-to-our-pockets money stream, they still take a cut and Pro is $20/month. I'm not sure where we stand with any $ from Spotify etc. It's probably less than Bandcamp.

What kind of bass do you play? I've used a Dunlop Bass Wah and a Wilson Freaker Wah (Tycho Parapedal clone - aka the early Black Sabbath wah). Neither are great with my Gibson, but that's a neck humbucker bass for ya. I really liked both with a p or j style bass though. No fuzz onboard either wah, but a J or a P thru a Superfuzz into either wah (fuzz first, then wah) is pretty rad imo.
Didn't get a shot, but it looked smaller than boards he's used in the past. I saw he was using some kind of Lehle switcher.
The bass was crushingly loud. Jeff actually drowned out Matt on a few songs, but it seemed like Matt was having some trouble with his guitar signal.

Wow, the current listings are pricey, looks like they've gone for half that in the past. Even then, that seems quite a bit for a wah.
Heheh, you're all probably right with the Dunlop Bass Wah/Mini Wah. Why'd they have to make it white, though? I suppose a rattle can (oooo! Krylon glitter blast!) will take care of that if I go that way and I like it.
@br1qbat : I normally play precisions or something like it with this band. I've thought about dragging the Thunderbird out for it, but the precision just seems to sit well within everyone's sound. I've got an EB-3 and I owned a EB-0, so I know what you mean about the tuna can.
I love my Super-Fuzz and Muff, and the variants I have for both, but if I go with a fuzz-less wah, I'll continue using the Fuzz War. It always seems to fit in well with this band whereever I throw it, even when I have it set wrong.
I like the options on the Chancellor Fuzz Wah. One thing that makes me hesitate on it and the Dunlop bass wah is the spring action and the auto off when you lift your foot. On the one hand, I like the squelch of a fuzz through a wah with the pedal back on guitar, so I figure I'd like it on bass too.
On the other hand, I've never liked the toe switch on any of my other wahs. Wanna shut off your wah? Gotta go full treble, and good luck on whether you'll actually crush the rubber bumpers and trigger the switch. So, I should probably just stop worrying and grab one of them.

Oh, yeah. I have no idea of the price on that one (either new or used). I just figured it would work well for most people in this forum! As stated before, I am incapable of using an actual wah without falling down, so I have not kept up on prices or anything for this one.Oooh, didn't know he had a signature one.

Just discovered this band from around here... stoner rock but with a lot of postpunk elements to the sound. Not a combo you run across often, but works.
I'm in the same boat and have switched to envelope filtering. If I was to go back to wah I definitely enjoy my Dunlop Bass wah. I'd strongly consider buying the Tech 21 Killer Wail Bass, sounds really good in videos and I love Tech 21 stuff.
Side note, I just saw that the G&L shutdown rumors were confirmed. Fender likely to buy and do…whatever Fender does to legacy brands. Not entirely confident in what they may have in mind
Not really Doom related, but I did wind up going to the Cannibal Corpse/Municipal Waste/Full og Hell/Fulci show this past weekend(Epic even center, Green bay) so I thought I'd do a quick writeup, for funsies.
Fulci: Brutal Death Metal from Italy, gore/horror themed. They had a projector going on the screen behind them with horror movie images(pretty sure), song titles, etc. Pretty good if you like the style, the stage banter was almost nil, they had some recorded interludes, stuff that fit what was on the projector basically but not much else. Otherwise, the band was certainly active and into it. Bass player had a BC Rich Mockingbird, played with a pick, and was one of the more active members on stage.
Full of Hell: Grindcore I think, or at least some variety of Core with a lot of grind elements. From PA/MD. Not really my jam, and aside from the vocalist(and drummer, of course) the rest of the band was a bit static. Bass moreso than guitar, though the bass player contributed on vocals so they couldn't always move much. Bass player had a Ric and a lot of distortion/fuzz on his tone. It did make the sound thicker in the mix but not great when he was on his own to my ears. I'm not much into this style so I can't give a fair judgement, but I did think it was neat that they had a few fans there in banana costumes the vocalist called out on stage. One was clearly a kid whose parents were near us on the balcony, and that kid was super excited to be there and down at the front/in the pit. Always good to see.
Municipal Waste!: One of the 2 bands I was actually there for, hadn't seen them live before. Crossover Thrash from VA. I like the band and they're a go to when I'm in the mood for Thrash, so the music was great. By far the most active stage show, I think they were all on wireless since they all swapped spots all over the stage, headbanging, etc. Even put a little riser right up front to highlight different players sometimes. My wife loved that they embraced the old school vibes with denim, headbands, hightop sneakers, etc. Tons of crowd engagement. Would go see again, and bought a shirt at their merch stand.
Cannibal Corpse: The other band I was there for, my favorite Death Metal band and one of my all time favorite bass players. So basically, I'm biased.
Music was solid as always, stage presence was good though Alex and Corpsegrinder were the only ones really moving around, Eric and () were definitely spirited and headbanging. Not quite as much crowd work from Corpsegrinder as I've seen before, but his speaking voice sounded a little rougher so that could be it. Otherwise this time actually got the crown involved in calling out the point we all know, the happy little song about shooting blood from your c***. Anyway, solid, but probably less excitement from the crowd than Municipal Waste. MW probably stole the show this time. Still good though.
Anyway, Epic is a nice spot for shows, we went up to the mezzanine this time for a smaller crowd and better view. Probably spring for that again next time I'm there since after lasik I'm just a bit more worried about taking an elbow to the face.
I've definitely become more Doom than Death the last few years, but sometimes the urge is still there and this hit just right.
