Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

project with the gf is going more smoothly now, she switched from fuzz bass to the kawai digital concert piano, now i can go more heavily overdriven into the eqd spatial delivery and she is playing some cleanish gothic electric piano/keys type chord stuff

waiting on the foam for the esp precision pickup and i'm currently debating whether or not to put flats on the L2000, i guess i need to A and B it with the LB100 along with the keyboard

I hope all of you have a great (insert whatever you'd like here) season and a great New Year.

My wife and I are going on a road trip to Madison, WI, then Minneapolis to tour Paisley Park, then Mt. Rushmore, then Chicago. Lots of driving, but we have a lot of Small Town Murder podcasts to make the time go easier.

She also updated our trip to Kyrgistan, we'll be there about four days for the World Nomad Games, then, Istanbul to see the Blue Mosque, then a few days in Ireland to finish. We'll be gone about 3 weeks.

As for bass content, well, it seems as if my left thumb is now becoming the issue as arthritis eats it. So, I'm looking at some options bass-wise. I had Rojo412 custom carve one of my basses, and the body feels great, but, the neck may need to be way more pool cue for the thumb to be happy. I'm casually looking at the various options I have before moving in a direction.

In totally non-doom news, I spent some time learning In Flames' "Swim". Pretty simple song in C standard. Feels good to play and learn new stuff, regardless of the difficulty. Other than that, I was gifted a set of strings today and nothing else bass-related. I don't really need anything, so no complaints here! Found a few bass tab channels on YouTube that have songs I dig, so I think I'll probably stick with some of those for a bit. Hopefully you all had a solid December 25th as well.

Clayman was probably the last thing they released that I liked and that's probably my favorite song on that album. Now I wanna learn the guitar part.

I was debating learning the guitar part as well! It may be close to my guitar skills limit, though, so we'll see. If nothing else, it'll get me to practice more guitar. Of the two songs I've learned on bass from that album, they're both pretty simple.

I think Clayman is their last true "melodic death metal" album, but I still very much enjoyed Reroute To Remain. And every album has had some good songs, though they've certainly changed their style a good deal. If you haven't listened to their most recent album (Foregone), I'd say give that a try. It's not Clayman-era tones, but it's back in that direction. Definitely the best thing they've put out in 15 years or more for me. I was pleasantly surprised.

I also don't follow much, but I've heard some songs here and there from those releases. For my tastes, given only those options, I'd say Orbit Culture is by far my favorite. I appreciate Whitechapel's newest offering more because they used a pedal by one of my favorite builders (Peper's Pedals), but the music itself didn't do a lot for me.

All that being said, I think I'm officially in the "old man yelling at clouds" phase of my musical tastes. Pretty much every one of my favorite albums this year was released by bands that have been around for decades. Even my "newest" band is about 20 years old.

My short list is:
Coroner - Dissonance Theory
Byzantine - Harbingers
Warbringer - Wrath And Ruin
Sodom - The Arsonist

There are probably a few others, but I can't recall them at the moment. As you can see, none of them are doom, or even doom-adjacent. I can never keep up with any of them anyway, as I take way too long to get to new releases, so it's fairly meaningless for me to do a "best of" 2025 list.

Spent most of the day playing bass. Wonderful! Didn't expect that, but wasn't going to argue. After a long stint of trying to fix fret buzz, that then became re-intonating my bass, which then became fixing the tuner whose washers had broken and fallen off, which then became sanding down the newer, thicker washer (thankfully, I had some of them here at all!), I was able to learn some more In Flames. This time it was Bullet Ride. I may end up learning the entirety of the Clayman album. I think I'll just need to figure out which bass to tune for the two tracks that are in drop A# or something like that. Probably just my same bass that's already in C as it's the closest for obvious reasons.

Gonna try tonight to get started learning Arch Enemy's We Will Rise. Should be another simple one. I'm having way too much fun learning some of my old high school/college favorites the last few weeks. So glad that I set up all my basses in different tunings a few months ago so I can just switch on the fly and go. Keep on doomin', all!

Just searched for an octave pedal, and found a deal on a Black Country Customs "The 85" pedal. Never heard of it, found some clips, and it sounds amazing, and has plenty of features. Got it way cheaper than I would have expected since it's a demo model. Regardless, I'm stoked.

Well, it's my lucky week, I suppose. That, or my patience has paid off. I've been eyeing a Green Rhino for my guitar rig at a local Music Go Round for a few months now, just waiting to see if the price drops. I have a few bucks in store credit, and I don't NEED the pedal, so I'm being patient. On a lark this morning, I check out their other stock online. They've got a Broughton Locust Star! It's been a "grail" pedal of mine the past few years, and I've been waiting to try one out as I'm wary of spending that much on something I can't test. So I spent the morning going through old pedals I don't really need or are redundant, as well as some that I've been (unsuccessfully) trying to offload. I entered MGR with $8 in store credit and 6 pedals - I left with $14 in store credit and 2 pedals. I managed to not have to pay a dime (of actual money)!

So I then spent the evening A/Bing the Locust Star to my Volt Thrower. Short version - both are absolutely amazing, and I can get them to sound pretty much identical on my big rig. If I have to pick a favorite, the Volt Thrower is ever so slightly my preference - but here's where it gets interesting. The Volt Thrower has never quite been able to get "that tone" on my 400RB-IV. It lives with my 700RB-II. But the Locust Star CAN get "the tone" on my 400RB-IV! I'm absolutely stoked. So glad I've been able to play so much the past few days, and I'm having a blast.

In regards to Arch Enemy's "We Will Rise" - yeah, didn't happen. I need to get some serious endurance in my fingers for that one! Didn't realize but the bass line is pretty much just constant 16th notes for the entire song with few exceptions. Maybe I'll go back to In Flames...

I wouldn't but I see where it's intriguing to use it as an aid or to get your mind working a different way versus letting it do the work for you.

At some point if 'AI' (the intelligence part is kinda suspect imo) keeps iterating based on prior info on the web, it's going to be iterating mostly on prior AI slop. At that point it seems it might run itself into the ground.

That's assuming it keeps becoming more and more commonly used to get info. The less real info out there, the less AI has to draw from. We already are seeing diminishing returns on such models.

And that is to say nothing about the ethics of stealing human art/thought/research to create that homunculus called AI art/knowledge/etc which can't exist without pilfering human sources first.

The amount of cash that has been dumped into AI horsesh1t has eclipsed what was spent getting us to the moon. And what is spent every year on finding a cure for cancer. Think about that.

So a lot of megabux spent for what exactly....? Ending the livelihoods of a lot of people, or the hope to do so by lots of greedy corporations. The data centers are making serious negative impacts wherever they crop up.

Without getting into off-topic matters, best AI doom metal I've run across is this... not as good as the best non-AI doom metal but I've also heard worse and much more generic. And this is much better than the same project's AI doom from about a year ago.



I have been wanting to train some model on my attempts at doom and see if the model's attempt at copying the style will be comically inept. Of course I've been "wanting" to do this for at least half a year and somehow keep being too busy with other things...
