Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Seeing these guys touring for this album, back to back with Neurosis touring for Times of Grace - in the midst of a 2-day blur of death metal at the 1999 Milwaukee Metalfest was a life-changing event.

Haven't heard this Gathering album in at least 10 years - I still dig it a lot. There's probably a hefty dose of nostalgia associated with it, but I think it holds up pretty well.

Love that album! The rest is pretty meh for me, maybe except if.then.else. and Nighttime Birds.

my sunn cab was a right bastard to get through, though i did manage to sneak through what smelled like a large amount of mouse poopie.

did someone say BNA audio actually made assemble yourself flatpack versions of the cabs? that would be rad. i might flick them an email.

edit: turns out there's a random old guy down the road from my house that builds BFM designs. not even kidding.

Do they? I know speaker hardware (dot) com, does. I priced them when looking for the light 15, that ended up being the Carvins.

You should pop down there and say hello. He might even have something sitting around you could plug into and try out.

so it looks like he builds from flatpacks rather than sources materials locally and builds from plans. he gets the speakers from a place i already receive a discount so it could make sense for me to tackle a DIY project with some help, depending on his pricing.

who would have thought i would be asking about super efficient cabs eh? i suppose we all do it eventually.

I still like having both. Eventually I plan on having my stage rig be the 300W tube Dunwich head into a sealed DIY 415, along with the Dunwich preamp running into a stereo power amp, into my two Duallies. I had to spend my budget for building to 415 on dental work though, bah.

yeah i am keen on mixing efficiency and inefficiency. 1515/66 on it's side, sunn 200s stacked on top, heads on top of that. neck pickup and bluebeard through 200w tube head through the 1515/66, bridge pickup and dod 250 through 100w head and sunn. might swap the head's roles around depending on how brutally efficient the 1515/66 is.

When I'm mixing cabs, I tend to put the dirtier lower wattage head into my Dually and the cleaner amp into my 810. Although even my clean isn't very clean. Sometimes my YBA-1, driven hard into the Dually IS my clean tone and then I'm just running fuzz or OD into my GK into the 810. I've liked it both ways, with different combinations.
