Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Its been a hell of a couple of days. Sunday recorded from 8p-3a then got woke up at 7am. My girl wakes me up... my neighbor shot himself outside in front of another neighbor. Grabbed a medical bag i keep, did what i could. That night i did a sleep study for snoring. Today i took the dogs to a dog park. Band practice cancelled. Could have used some loud therapy. But i got to pick up a rough mix of our recording. Now halfway through a bottle of 15 yr scotch...

So let me say this...I've only ever used an 810 in a DOOM situation once before and the cab was on the other side of the stage so I never really heard it well enough. So when I first plugged in and riffed a bit it wasnt exactly what I was expecting. It does that low mid pummel exactly like I thought, dark and very round sounding. What I was surprised with was the volume output, I was expecting a lot more, especially having more than twice the speaker area as most of my other cabs, but my idea of a loud cab might be a bit skewed because my other cabs could be equally or more loud than an 810. The EVM 215 is probably a bit louder but some of that could be perception because of the mid range differences of the two cabs. It's definitely a way different style of cab than I've used thus far.

Also I noticed between my high output P bass and my low output ric, there is some high roll off with the hotter pickup, is that a normal thing?


Physical condition wise, the rat fur covering is more like a carpet and it isn't as bad as I was lead to believe. The grill is uglier in person and will probably be burned. All speakers work fine but 3 of them have been ripped/damaged and ghetto fixed.

Two piece wise, where I'm not competing with a guitarist, the cab sounds great and is definitely a better suited cab than the EVM 215. The real test will be with the whole VEGA mix, but I'm thinking the results will be similar.

So fugly...but once I get a new 18 for the folded 18, tres fridges amigos.

Dude... If some of the drivers are toast, I would consider all of them needing a look-see to make sure they are not all fried or on their way out.

You may be in for 8 new drivers...

The tone knob should make the tone darkerbas you turn it clockwise. There should not be any volume loss. Also doesn't the drive work in reverse too? All the way counterclockwise is max dirt?

All the drivers do work without crackling or odd noise, it's just that some of them are ghetto patched. And slowly replacing speakers isn't that much of a problem for me.

You're very adamant about me keeping that evm 215 aren't you. Your science is clouding your DOOM. Whenever I trade with friends I instate a trade back/use again claus.

Tweaked my Pharaoh last night to unexpected results. Volume at noon, other knobs at 9:00, set to lo silicon. Nice and bassy, with just a bit of grinding fuzz to cut. Very nice! Tried tweaking the lo germanium option, but it either lost fuzziness and sounded muted, or just didn't sound right. Still gonna use my original setting, but the new silicon is the fave ATM.

Morning fellas.

Probably blasphemy but I loaned out my Bazz to a co-worker the other day so I stuck the old Bass Big Muff back on the board. I was able to find a pretty damn good sounding setting and now I'm thinking about adding it back to the board full time. It sounds better with flats than it did with the old rounds that I was using. Anyway, that's all I've got. Carry on.

So, did your buddy inform you that the speakers were jacked or was that a surprise?

I almost bought an 8x10 from my old neighbor for $100 bucks. He told me that tolex was pretty much completely gone, but the speakers were good. I didn't care about the tolex, so I went over to check it out. Two speakers with poopy repairs like yours, another 3 failed the battery test. I told him thanks but no thanks. What I hoped was a cheap cab was about to get really damn expensive.

The controls on the DD always seemed weird to me. From what I remember the gain and tone were very interactive.

Not sure if you've seen the "manual" but it at least explains what's going on with the knobs.
