I had a B3K and I would not use it in a stoner/doom/sludge setting. If I were playing something more metal then maybe. The B3K has a very modern scooped tone with a bright top end. This genre tends to favour more vintage mid heavy tones. But there are no rules. The VT is based on the rat. Get yourself a rat and see if it's something you like. If you do the VT is even better.

Apparently, there are several makers of boutique level rats. Vfe Alpha Dog, walrus audio iron horse, idiotbox blower box, Fuzzrocious rat tail, the volt thrower... Maybe one day I'll be able to take a serious look at some of these. Anyone try any of the other rats? I like my Eno rat and have dialed it in for my Pbass. So gnarly. I think I still favor the budget OCD tones of the Joyo ultimate drive, for the P.

Road like 25 miles, alone I don't have to stop so it's faster, but country dogs chase and try and get me when I'm alone. This evening I got rushed by two pit bulls, got one kicked in the head and ran the other one over as it tried to bite my foot and I managed to swat him down with my front tire and roll over it. Adrenaline rush I did not need, but safe to say I can perform defensive foot combat while maintaining evasive speeds.

So I'm never taking a right on C. Wolfe again, that's a lefty road always and forever.

You can also get a standard Rat or Turbo Rat and have FXDoctor mod it for better low end retention.

How do you think the VT would work with an active bass? All of my basses are pure active or passive pickups with a preamp. All of the sound clips I've heard are passive.

It sounds like they are pretty rare and $220 is an amount I can't just drop without doing my home.

I had just got up the steepest hill of the ride in the hard gears and they showed up so I was depleted and had to summon the strength and you know how stuff slows down in crazy moments... or at least it does for me?

How do you think the VT would work with an active bass? All of my basses are pure active or passive pickups with a preamp. All of the sound clips I've heard are passive.

I've only recently gone high-tech with the running now with the bluetooth enabled heart rate monitor. An unintended result is that I have hard data to correlate to which songs actually get me pumped. I'm hesitant to admit how much Judas Priest's "Leather Rebel" takes me up notch...

Naw, not a fitbit, just a standard Polar brand heart rate monitor with bluetooth that talks to my phone. I run the RunKeeper app on the phone and it logs the data.
I don't feel entirely comfortable with all this personal vital signs data escaping off into the infosphere… but I feel more uncomfortable lugging 30 extra lbs around, ha ha.
Other big winners on the heart-rate impact: Sister Sin's "End of the Line", first half of Kyuss' "50 Million Year Trip", first two minutes of Amon Amarth's "Twilight of the Thunder God"… and well, yeah, Judas Priest's "Painkiller"!

For running I like long riffy instrumemtal or limited vox cuts. Bongripper and Monobrow've been in heavy (get it?) rotation this summer.

NP. I'm probably over sensitive to it, I see that a lot around here and I don't understand it sometimes.

I think I might like the idea of this pedal more than the pedal its self. Its hard to peek my interest so when something catches my eye I'm quick to obsess about it.

I'd hold out for the VT. Hoping I've got my ducks in a row in time for the next preorder.
Both it and the DA120 sound incredible in the demos I've heard.

On the EW.
The new bass players tone sounds decent. But the note definition is crap or he is playing to heavy handed and it's sputtering out. I don't know. He sounds lost half the time.
Either that or my ear is bad. Which is quite possible.
I'll probably pick up the album hoping that it sounds different than the youtube leak.

I love the new bassist's tone, from what I've heard so far.

Too bad the riffage isn't as good as it used to be. In my opinion. I wish they'd put the same energy into creating their songs as they do with creating their image.

I think the new EW is a solid album, nothing to special but I've liked it more than yob's new album but I listen them both none the less, hopefully spirit caravan or sleep will come through with that new slammer for the ages next year.

I haven't heard the full Yob album yet, just "In Our Blood" and "Unmask the Spectre," from live videos. Everyone's going on about how it's better than Atma, but Atma is my favorite record by them. "Unmask the Spectre" is pretty amazing, though, in my opinion.

They don't sound anything alike, I would just hold onto the B3K AND get a VT if you're into the RAT tone on bass, but want a more flexible and bass friendly tone.

Yeah, those EVs can bite faces off.

Don't get me wrong those evms are amazing speakers and sound pretty good, but I've never been a fan of the slicing high mids and not so much low mid and bass, that's why I think the 810 might win out. It has the pummeling low mid thing that I'm looking for.

Ah, see, I love those slicing high mids. Heh, my entire rig actually seems somewhat prone to putting out high mids.

Eh, I actually think a modern scooped tone is even less advisable in most metal than in stoner/doom/sludge. In a lot of what we play, people are going to be playing in power trios, or with only one guitar, and the tempo is going to be slow enough that there won't be bass drum constantly going on, so there's a lot more space for the bass to occupy. In faster types of metal, with two guitars going on, and lots of kick drum, sometimes even double-kick, it's much easier for the bass to get lost, and if you use a scooped tone, you're basically fighting over frequency range with the kick drum... and that's a battle the kick drum will win, every time. That's why I used considerably less low end in my black metal band than I do with my doom metal stuff.

Rip out the preamps.

In all serious, I guess just avoid boosting on your active pres? Maybe you'd have to set the Volt Thrower to a lower gain setting or something? Perhaps add active/passive switches to your basses?

I've read here and there that there's some low end loss, though I haven't used one so I'm not really sure.

fuzzrocious makes the rat tail and the feedback loop does come in useful when we play dunwich, i haven't tried their dark driving yet with the band i'm guessing it will be way more stoner vintagey sounding, i haven't had any low end loss with mine, but mine has an added blend knob too
