Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Moved my darkest driving in front of my demon/rat. Since the boost on the darkest driving works even when its off i basically have 6 dirts to pick from. Not counting the Bluebeard and stacking pedals.

Not that ive been playing with it for a while now, i've got a better opinion/thoughts on the Darkest Driving.

Current settings left to right: T@10:30 V@2:00 G@1:30 w/4001 & sil diodes w/boost@2:00 before circuit

I really like the nature the circuit especially of its "compression". It sounds huge and punchy. I get a nice low fuzz/grind tone. Reminds me of Nick's tone on the early queens records. It responds really nicely to playing dynamics. Digging in yields big rewards. I wasn't sure how to use the bright setting for a while. I had to find a sweet spot with the tone and gain so that the bright switch wasn't shrill or way louder when i kicked it on. I found it ads a nice bite when i switch from playing with a pick to using fingers. It also helps me stand out in the mix when the guitarists are pounding out sludgy chords. This is becoming my #1 pedal.

Been away for the weekend and yep... no chance of catching up. Played a black metal gig at a campsite in the middle of the woods. Ridiculously cold (the venue helpfully opened all these barn doors during our set) but for atmosphere it could not be beat.

OK...I had a killer practice and I used just one pedal. A Turbo Rat with vintage Rat mods. I didn't love it solo but it was so thick and meaty in the mix (with the bass boosted on my amp).

So...now I'm on the lookout for a Rat with an active bass boost.

It's amazing how the train keeps on rolling.......

I'll have to check out that Norm bit. My weirdo guess going into the final season was going to be that the entire show was a fantasy taken from Skyler's novel that was mentioned in season one but was dropped as an angle.

This never ends. I also like revisiting old gear and being surprised how good it sounds or how I can use it in different ways than I did before. It also helps me reset and figure out what actually works and does not work in my most recent tone journey.

One thing I can't figure out is how I spent so many years playing clean with my fingers without a care in the world but now I hate playing without a pick and a dirt pedal.

I did this for years too, hell I was still playing clean fingerstyle for the most part of The Great Barrier Reefer and Hippie Killer....I can't imagine doing that now.

Although I was always fascinated by bass distortion, it took me a long time before I figured out how to incorporate it into my tone, now it's inseparable from my sound.

Sorry I haven't been on for a bit, work cracked down on internet usage stuff and I've been busy as poopie. Jetta blew a head gasket this weekend, gonna take the head off tonight and assess damages. I have a replacement engine and transmission lined up for $100 locally so all isn't lost. Just kicking myself because I let the oil get low and caused this, my own damn fault but lesson learned. And now I get to learn a whole bunch o mechanical lessons completely reassembling the car! *kicks self*

After tweaking EQ, my rat is sounding so good. The Ultimate Drive is so thick, but I got the rat super dialed in with both basses. The Ultimate Drive almost sounds too dark now. Going to mess with the tone knob to see if I can't get both pedals sounding great with both basses. Jucifer show now with Thombo's band. The previous band dropped for whatever reason. Got to make new handbills and all that.

We're moving jam spaces. Our current studio won't let bands share rooms. Except we did it for years without issue. Now that one band left and we tried to add new bands they're saying, "nope!" We decided to move in with a band at another studio. We cut our rent in half and doubled our space. This new place is a poopie hole though. I can only best describe it as damp. Oh.. and rat infested. Can't forget the rats.
