Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Maybe I'll ask you fellas. So I think I'm gonna buy a Gibson SG bass and tune it to BEAD. I found some Labella build your own set stainless steels.

I was wondering what gauges would be recommended on a 30 inch scale. I was thinking something like...

.60 .80 .105 .135 or maybe a .140

Any suggestions?

Here's a thread discussing it and bassstringsonline let's you make custom sets as it says. I'll probably call them Monday if I can and pester everything out of them I can to get all the info I can.

@mc_muench that means your galactic hatchet V can tune down if you don't sell it.

.60 .80 .110 .140
If you can find them. Much less floppy than, .105 and .135. Short scale 30" is rough to do down tuning but it can be done just don't forget to widen your nut slots.
An SG with a mudbucker at the neck would be awesome for BEAD.

"When ordering Short or Medium scale we may send "Long Scale" or "Extra Long Scale" strings that have no taper (for example .045 string)."

That's at the bottom of the page idk how big a deal it is yet, I'll figure it out tomorrow.

.069 .089 .109 .128T is the sizes on the flat wound deep talking Short B setup.

I have a bronco, hi flyer, bass vi (needs to be put together again) and a Epi EB-0.

Of those the EB-0 is the only one to feature normal size bass tuners. This is where the no taper comes to question for me in regards to the other basses.

What sucks is I just fell in love with roto swing 66 stainless strings, so I'd totally want a set of la bells stainless rounds in B on the bronco, but it's tuners are like 2/3s as big as a fender standard tuner.

I did tune the bronco to bead last night with my .90 E as the B and it worked, but I want biggie strings.

Oh and last thing. Since like I guess they stopped calling the Gibson an EB-0 and went with "SG bass", the neck humbucker is notttt the same as the original "mudbucker". I fell down an internet rabbit hole a few years back. Anyways I wound up with a used epi EB-0 which I made sure was the solid mahogany version ($100). Then I had my gf at the time buy me an eBay artec sidewinder. It's a Chinese replica of the original pickup. They can come a little janky but fixes are easy, like flipping a magnet over and gluing it down. That said it's a cheap pickup, I complained about a chip in a magnet and they sent me a free second one without warning so that cool to get in the mail. The Gibby is like 5-10k output I think, the epi stock pickup is like 2-3k. In the meantime my artec replica is a true to the original 32k!!! And the brother they sent is like 27k. I'd totally grab a better bridge now, I was gonna sell it because I couldn't achieve down tuning with it, but nows I can!

Gig report: Had a great time performing with a couple local bands last night. The show was LOUD. There were only three bands playing, but the stage was pretty filled with gear. Tonally my new rig worked quite well. I opted to run the 810 off of Amp A and the 215 off of Amp B of the SVT 4-Pro. I cut through with plenty of gain and midrange sizzle, but still had pant flapping lows coming out. I was really quite pleased with the overall mix and the audience seemed to dig it. I actually had the sound guy ask me to turn down a little after the 2nd song as the 215 was shooting right at his face.

The night was not without its woes though. We played 7 songs and after the 4th, my amp cut out. Which totally ****ing blows. I have never owned a tube bass head but have heard they can be relatively fragile. Conversely I have owned a slew of SS/hybrid amps and consistently have overheating problems and problems with heads that want to cut out. What the hell.

Its not the end of the world, I need to check it out and see if it is an airflow thing or a fuse issue. It was still making sound through the cabinets, but it was essentially 2nd floor apartment practice volume instead of ear shattering volume. Gain was at 3 o clock and the master was pushed a fuzz past noon. The limiter light was not flashing at all, nor was it disengaged.

Any opinions?

All in all the night went well though. I was much more stoked about our/my personal performance than the last show. Also we debuted a new song and it ripped. Would have been cooler if my amp was working properly.

Ok so yesterday morning I saw I received a text at 4:42 am from a guy asking about a piece of gear I'm flipping. I reply and much later he replies he absolutely needs it but his wife has to give him her car. Then an hour later he says he has permission and will be leaving Houston and headed my way around 3am so he can make it by morning (6 hour trip). Anyways I say you don't have to do that unless you need to get up early? Then he says his kid's too young to make the trip, so they are timing it so that the kid can just sleep through them leaving it alone for 12+ hours!

So he showed up late and he had a pantera shirt on and said he had to see some bags house before leaving dfw... In fact that's why his wife came too and left the baby...

So I just 1-click bought a blacked out Squier Short Scale Jag bass on amazon.

All 3 of those are really nice amps. I've had an M6 and a couple TB1200's. Swapped out the M6 for an M9 and wished I hadn't
