Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

I was browsing a local pawn shop after work and discovered a pretty sweet Peavey Fury. The owner was looking for $200 but I talked him down to $120. It's a little banged up but the neck is straight, it plays really well and I am a sucker for a sweet black and maple P. I figured I would swap the pickups out and possibly the hardware. Thinking about the GZRs. It will be nice to have a bass in a tuning other than C. Not sure if this will be tuned to standard or D.

a peavey fury was my first bass!

LOL, I love it, for us doomers it's obvious we're NOT in standard tuning.
I've been playing with our drummer's second project while our guitarist on his two weeks vacation, a punk/rock/funk two piece (well, three piece with me), halfway into first song on the first pracitce we figured I'm somewhat too low (we were a bit inebriated). Then it dawned on me, I've got both my basses in D standard
. Turned out it was obvious for the guitarist I was in standard tuning. It was obvious to me I wasn't 
Spent the weekend camping at Texas Renaissance Festival. It got pretty weird and naked at night. Drank a lot of whiskey. Good times.

The new Still Valley songs are a lot darker than what we started out playing. How did that happen. This newest one sounds like human extinction, like the soundtrack for it.
Pretty neat. I never turn up after sound check. Learned a long time ago not to be that guy. I try not to drink until we start our set. That way I can get a little loose but don't get sloppy. Actually booze is what made me ditch my compressor. I noticed I was drinking more than wise at gigs and using it to compensate for sloppy playing.
Jason at bassstringsonline is awesome. Time to order a custom set of labella short scale stainless rounds.

They are sweet basses! My neck is "bi-cut" in a very similar fashion to my G&Ls, and the maple is quarter sawn. Outside of these old Peavey basses, where else can you get a USA made guitar for under 3-400 bones regularly? It plays just as nicely as my two MIA basses.
Bryce I drill and mock up first then when I am happy I sand. I went from 80 to 400 grit and took my time with sanding. Then throw on a pair of rubber gloves, get some t-shirt rags, wrap it around your index finger and rub it in. Use extra for the deeper parts of the wood like bumps and what not that couldn't be sanded. Go kind of heavy then after you finish grqb another t-shirt and wipe down the excess to help dry, then let it dry. I may do a second coat or go right to layer tru oil on it. I do a coat a night and steel wool in between coats. After 12 coats or so I use the tru oil wax finish for two coats. Easy peasey and not much smell in the house.
I might have a cocktail & some smokey treats but I keep it mellow with mostly water and I crack a Rockstar Recovery orange when I get set up. The main place we play doesnt even mic me anymore.
Really happy with staining using artist oil. Exactly what I wanted, grainy, see-through black.
