Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Dude you're in a two-piece. Clearly guitars are overrated. Just rig up them Peaveys and roll forth.

(That said, having listened to the Vega album a bunch, that dude's got good pipes.)

we rarely have shows where one of us doesn't have what I would consider a major fvck up. things happen that never happened in a practice. hardly anyone notices and I don't think anyone has ever commented about it. if he wasn't drunk, I personally would not have confronted him. at most I'd say we need more practice and show experience so that we become more professional. at the end of the day this is all a hobby for us, I assume it's the same for everyone in this thread, no one is depending on their performance/band to provide food and shelter.

having said that it is very satisfying to play a perfect set, and we do aim to do that but understand that we can only devote a few hours a week to music and that will always be our limitation.

hope it blows over, try making it more of a "we need more experience" instead of singling him out.

of course if there are other issues then that's va different story, I'm just going on what you shared.

Dude...last night we played a show and had our first real train wreck ever, and it was on a song about we NEVER flub at all... it sucks...but we just laughed it off... helps take out the sting. If its a recurring issue than yeah, it needs addressing, but try to keep cool with each other... we all shag up.

That said, we don't allow our one guitarist or the drummer more than one or two beers before we play.

Confronting someone immediately after a set about their mistakes/performance is usually the worst possible time to do it, as tensions are running high. Usually better to sleep on it and decide the next day if it is worth bring up, and if it is, doing it in a respectful manner.

I pride myself on almost never making a mistake playing live, but it happens to the best of us, and obviously doesn't happen on purpose. Best to move on, pretend like it never happened, and whatever you do don't stop playing. It is easy to be hyper critical of yourself on something you've played 100 times but 99% of the time, no one in the audience noticed your flub. And even if they did, they're not going to care.

That said, first gig tonight in 6 months. Hopefully I don't screw up ;)

Remembering last years legal difficulties, history etc. you mentioned and that the guy is a major creative input in the band, I can somewhat safely say I feel it's always gonna be some kind of eggshells when dealing with the issues surrounding the guy.

While your drummers timing and what was said was pretty bad, it's all stuff that probably needs mentioning, and your guitarists probably just as mad at himself even though he'd probably never admit it.

Good news is you got your album out like you wanted. If I recall you said back then that was your one major goal before it got too hairy.

Thanks for the input everyone, like i said it wasnt anything out of the ordinary, all be it annoying because me and my drummer dont seem to have as many problems, but it wasnt enough that i thought we needed to say something. My drummer can be a hot head dick sometimes and he, NO, WE could have definitely handled it much better than we did. Mainly not doing it directly after our set. And at the same time my guitarist could grow some balls and take it like a 40 year old man, not a crying 6 year old.

Speaking of music (not that we speak of that here) found Seventh Void the other day.
I've got mixed emotions on them. I really want to like them (Kenny from Type O) but they come across like so many artists' side projects.
Just shy of the mark.

Course I haven't heard them crazy loud yet, I'm sure that can help.

I picked up their album for cheap, not expecting much, was much better than i thought it would be. It does sound a little over produced, but i think the music is solid.
