Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Well that was interesting. That venue has fallen from glory apparently, and has gone from busy crazy nights to barren wasteland. Probably made obvious by the fact I was asked to run the door.

It was weird I was told by the owners to pocket all the cash made at the door ($16) out of $48 in sales. Then I left with my singer friend as she wanted to get food. When I got back I found they paid the bands equal amounts based on door sales, and decided to give the $32 paypal to the touring band, that had already left upon my return.

My drummer uses one of the hybrid Ampegs (5-pro I believe) for his kick monitor. It has begun to make a "static" noise when you tap on it - or when it's vibrating from sitting on top of the cabs. We replaced the preamp tube, but no fix. Anyone have ideas if this is something we might troubleshoot? We verified it's not a ground issue, or the mixer input, etc. The amp is sensitive to vibration...

Sounds like a microphonic pre amp tube or maybe if it has MOSFET power section the bias is off.

After one near miss and another missed opportunity, I finally got my mitts on a Vulcan. With all the hype (courtesy of @mc_muench), I had pretty high expectations. Wow, they are met. I'm still getting acquainted with the head, but it definitely holds its own against my F800, plus it has the advantage of built-in effects. Granted, I can only access the reverb without the footswitch, but the reverb is killer. This beast will only get better when I acquire a footswitch. Anywho, take a gander...it's pretty clean!

totally entwhistled my rig last night. no treble, full bass, tone knob rolled off, mudbutt Bluebeard one side, max treble and mids, max gain DOD on the other. ****ing delicious, can't believe I'd never tried it before.

I go back-and-forth between switching and using a drop tuner pedal. Sure, the DT pedal loses a tad of fidelity and there's a little glitchiness to it, but it's hella convenient and for dive bar shows who gives a fugg. After using two basses all summer and fall (E stnd & D stnd), I'm going to try the new Digitech Drop pedal this winter and see how it holds up. I used to have the Whammy DT and the DT side of that did decently, but I sold that bigarse unit to pay for my Bass Whammy. The problem I noticed during guitar switching was dead air; both me and my guitarist did the switch so we had the awkward pause. With the DT pedal, he can switch axes and I can click and then talk.

I am going to try out that EHX pitch fork for drop tuning.

Well, not all is joyful in the world of Vega...we had a run of the mill, standard show from our side of this, not terrible but not our best. Me and my drummer were pretty tight but our guitarist biffed up a few times, went wildly out of tune, kicked his pedals unplugging everything, this stuff happens kinda often at shows. And He wasnt even drunk and hasnt been drinking before shows since we had a diaster show in which he was shvtfaced. Well it seemed no one else really noticed, again i like to think we cover up that stuff pretty well. But my drummer decided to confront him about it right after our set. Whatever he said, my guitarist didnt take too well. Hes a pretty passionate guy and took it to heart so hes more than pretty upset. His word was "heartbroken". He doesnt want to practice this week at all and we open for The Skull next Saturday. He also mentioned taking a break after this next show, no clue how serious that statement was.

But yeah. Rant over.

Huh, i just thought he was drunk. It didn't sound bad out front, and it was an entertaining set. Hope everything blows over.
