I used to own a MarkBass LMII and while it's a good amp in general (500w in 5 lbs for the price they go for is pretty good), it's definitely very modern sounding. Which is not my taste, personally. I used mine with pedals and my Precision in a powerviolence band I used to be in and I ended up getting rid of it, because I just could not stop knob turning. That's the kiss of death to an amp for me, I had constantly fiddling with my settings. It has a certain baked in EQ that I personally do not like. It's that kind of low mid scoop associated a lot with modern jazz bass slap n pop style. A lot of people associate it with the SVT tone, but they must be using their SVTs very differently than I do, if that's the case.

EDIT: Just figured it out, it sounds like an SVT CL with the two "ultra" buttons pressed in. That's the "SVT sound" the LMII has.

Don't think I've ever seen a powerviolence band, unless you count Agoraphobic Nosebleed.

Anyone ever play a Birdsong bass? Was browsing through the post your pets with basses thread and saw this beauty:

It's just really really fast parts and really really slow parts. Basically the punk version of grindcore (early Napalm Death style) mixed with sludge. Mental Waste is a continuation of that (same singer/guitarist), but a lot more of the fast and a lot less of the sludge, though it's still in there. Really fun music to play for me, but it's kind of hard to find drummers.

Biggest reason I sold my MB was because I couldn't stop knob turning. The gig that I used it on, I couldn't get a good tone to save my life. I sold it right back to the guy I bought it from. And as for those ultra switches, IMO they are tone suicide. I don't use them any more. Maybe a Aguilar TH500 would be a good micro doom amp. I got some pretty good QOTSA kinda tones with the pedal version. If the TH500 has the AGS feature like the pedal does, might be worth a look.

I get my amp fuses at auto parts stores, most of the time.


I have been looking at the TH500 as a possible backup amp for a while. That's the only thing I miss about the LMII, having a really loud lightweight amp for jams and practices where hauling a huge tube amp would be an unnecessary pain.

That's endorsement enough for me to give it a whirl. But I think I'm gonna hold off on more pedals until I build these cabs. Was reading the Boss LS-2 thread earlier, and it makes me want to double my board space and start layering and looping effects. Another bonus to switching to a cleaner rig (the opposite of what everyone here seems to be doing) but if I have 3 dirt pedals and a pre-amp running in various parallel blended configurations, I think clean amplification would be best. Maybe not though, keeping the old equipment just in case I change my mind.
