So, I love this genre and have listened to a ton of it over the years, but I've noticed that a lot of the bands who get categorized as "stoner" seem to be (dare I say) "one trick ponies."

My own band often likes to stray into "stoner" territory sometimes with long repetitive riffage and such, but we wouldn't call ourselves a "stoner rock" band since it's only one tool from our bag of tricks (we consider ourselves to be progressive rock). That being said here the crux of why I'm saying all this:

Can you guys point me towards some other bands that delve into stoner rock fairly regularly, but also branch out in other directions as well? The only example I can really come up with is Pelican's latest album, which IMO seems about 50% post-rock and 50% stoner rock.

I almost said "...Pelican and early Sabbath..." so yeah, I guess it does.

Hmmm, stoner sludge? I'm not sure if I buy it, but you're on the right track.

Another example I just thought of is Mr. Gnome, I think you could call them Stoner Indie Rock... which I know sounds ridiculous but is pretty accurate.

btw, I'm not a huge "genre-ficator," but I think they can be really useful for this particular sort of conversation.

IMO, the best genre of music right now. So many bands coming out and tons of good music. Most have been mentioned by now, I'd guess.

What other directions did you have in mind?

I really like what a lot of the bands on Elektrohasch Records are doing with "stoner rock"- taking the earthy, organic feel that made Kyuss so great and branching further off into Krautrock, jazz and psych. Check out Colour Haze, Los Natas, Hypnos 69, Causa Sui and RotoR if this sounds good to you.

If you prefer a darker sound, look into Ufomammut. They take super low tuned Electric Wizard style riffs and mix them with heavily effected psych passages and some extremely sinister synth.

Graveyard carries an almost classic rock Allman Brothers sort of feel to stoner rock. I think they're awesome and the singer has pipes for days.


Kylesa bridges sometimes to punk rock, stoner rock, thrash, and whatever else they feel like writing that day, it seems. I really dig this band.
