Stuff to do in Philly?

It's been SO long since I've been back. Cheese steaks rock but man I'd get a hoagie from Sarcones deli right off the plane. I've had passable cheese steaks here but the hoagie? It's impossible around here. Italian pork dripping with pork juice off it, provolone, braised greens and olive oil on the Italian seeded roll ( NOT MAYO!! ) ... my mouth is watering...

Do they still give the old steam train rides? That was a blast and a beautiful trip too. I was a kid so not sure where we did that from to be honest.

I went to Geno's. It's way overrated. Not awful but not memorable. They have these big diner-type griddles to cook the steak slices so they mass cook the beef, onions, peppers; it's not made-to-order like at a sub shop. Mine was kind of over-cooked and chewy. There's a huge line when I went so they are working fast to get each order processed. Fries order is small. Kind of over-priced too.
I don't want to sound too cocky but I make a better steak and cheese sandwich.

I'll second that about Tommy DiNic making a good pork sandwich but I'm more a Koch's deli man myself. I was at the terminal last weekend and bought some delicious pastry and rotisserie'd wings. After you visit the USS New Jersey, just a couple of steps away is the Adventure Aquarium if you're into aquatic nature, in center city at the hotels and clubs you can find plenty of good music on south Broad St. The Eagles might have outdoor practices at the Novacare and Atlantic City is just an hours drive away.

I used to live in Philly. Here are my recommendations:

1) Go to South Street. Evenings are best -- especially Friday or
Saturday. Lots of crazy shops, crazy people, restaurants and bars.

2) Go to Pat's and/or Geno's steaks and get steak sandwiches.
They are near 9th and Wharton Streets. I constantly argue
with my friends about whether or not these are "classic"
cheese steaks (I say not) but that is another topic. Regardless,
the cheese steaks are very tasty and it is something you must
experience in your lifetime.

3) If you are there during the day on a weekday, go to City Hall
and take the tour to the top of the tower. Being able to go to
the top of City Hall is a little known secret that most Philadelphians
don't even know about. It is ultra-cool.

Yup it is. It's definitely got a freaky vibe, just like the museum, but different. ;)

Overall, I hate Philadelphia. I can't lie. While there are nice areas (like the museum district), it's a very dirty city to me. There is a lot of crime, and there is copious gang activity present. Hell, go to a home game of any sport and root *against* the home team, and you'll get first hand experience of the brotherly love.

Again, there are some very nice areas, but I prefer to avoid the city like the plague, thank you.

While you are certainly free to have your opinion, some of this is uninformed. Agreed some parts of the city are dirty but there are many parts of the city that are quite nice. Those parts of the city are not the parts of the city that generally tend to draw outsiders because they are where people live. Plus the city is really old. Few cities in the country have as many old buildings as Philly and that does give some areas a somewhat rundown look.

There is no more crime in Philly than most big cities. This myth persists from before the mid 90s when an effort was made to reduce crime. While some of the methods to rid the city of crime were not nice, the results are clear that Philly is not more dangerous than most cities (check the 10 most dangerous cities in America according to the FBI Invalid Link Removed).

Gang violence? Maybe you are referring to the flash mobs from a year or two back. The city took measures to end those and it has. It was primarily high school students when they were off from school in the summer. Hasn't happened this summer. To me that seems like the mark of a good city, stopping a completely new sort of crime in less than a year.

I will agree with you about Philly sports fans. I hate Philly sports fans and would not recommend people go to games if you aren't a fan of the home team. These people are the worst representatives of Philadelphia and give us all a bad name.

The same can be said about many a city...though the sport fans are tough.

There is a very strong presense of bloods, crips, and Latin kings in Philly. with my job, I work with several gang task forces in the state and just attended a seminar in Williamsport last Wednesday reviewing some current stats. I assure you there is prominent gang presense there.

...And I lived in Denver for a while. For a very large city, it's the anti-Philadelphia.
