Summer Build Off 2022 - Get Ready!

Every time I try to sneak a new bass or amp into the house, one of the nosey little monsters go and tell the wife.

Dude I get busted when I get new strings. Or the other habit. Fuzz pedals. Wife:"How many fuzz pedals to you need?" Me: "But this one has fancy graphics on it!" Wife: "Sounds the same!" Me:"That's because you don't have a fine tuned ear for awesome!"

My wife is an enabler; she actually bought me a fuzz pedal as a birthday gift! Of course, she is a guitar player and I know for a fact she steals my pedals when I'm not home...

I'm slaving away at work and she's at home, drinking my whisky and shredding my fuzz pedals...:rolleyes:

Speaking of the build off, here is how I personally like to prepare to build a new design for the build-off:

1. Full scale drawing of front/back and side views.
2. Inventory list of all purchased and made hardware and electronics needed based on scale drawing and plan.
3. Order all purchased components and compare to drawing and adjust as needed.
4. Secure/organize all of the lumber and materials for any built components involved in the design.
5. Design and create any and all templates for parts/components in the design.
6. Mill and dimension all lumber pieces to final specs ready for glue up.
7. Stand back and be satisfied with my preparation.
8. Change one seemingly meaningless specification, and then have to change several other things to accommodate this including new drawings, templates, purchases and dimensioning of final lumber.
9. At the last second, change back to the original plan rendering all of the previous extra work pointless.
10. Revisit Step 8 again and do it all one more time.
11. Almost quit the process entirely, go to the Basses forum and complain about Fenders in a passive aggressive way in several unrelated threads.
12. Contemplate leaving TB altogether.
13. Join the build off like nothing happened and make a bass that I'm not entirely satisfied with.

Up until step 8 you had me worried something was wrong with you… :D
 
@Beej , my process is quite similar, but just slightly less inefficient

One month in advance of start date
1. Open BEvERage, doodle in notebook.
2. Open BEvERage, make list in notebook.
3. Repeat weekly.
One week in advance of start date
4. Open BEvERage, doodle in notebook.
5. Open BEvERage, make list in notebook.
6. Repeat daily.
Day before start date
7. Post some random comment that binds me to a theme I hadn't thought of yet..
8. Scrounge some wood and call it "reclaimed".
9. Ignore notebook
10. Sketch or steal a new plan (outline only, ignore 3rd dimension).
Start Date
11. Post a pile of wood picture early so people thing that you planned this
After Start Date
12. Buy parts only after you see how the build is shaping up.
 
When I was an HVAC service tech I really disliked those Filtrete filters too. I always advised people to get the inexpensive ones with a cloth type material like he showed.
I know absolutely nothing about this, but it grabbed my attention that the two filters had completely different numbers on them. Two minutes on google suggests that the cheap filter uses the industry standard rating for filtration effectiveness, but 3M made up their own rating system. Huge red flag.

I started using the 3M HEPA filters in the house a couple years ago and at some point my wife asked whether I'd changed the types of air filters we use because allergies & other things weren't as severe as they used to be. It wasn't placebo effect because she hadn't known I'd stopped using cheapo air filters in favor of HEPA filters. They're kinda spendy but they're also replaced on a 3 month cycle rather than monthly, and regular sales at Costco takes an edge off the price too. On the whole I'd say we're spending maybe 15% more than we used to on air filters, which ain't nothing but ain't a lot either.

It's possible that the 3M filters are good as HEPA filters and bad as sawdust filters. Sawdust is a lot bigger than pollen, and maybe the cheaper filter is the better tool for that job.

There were a couple of issues. The Filtrete ones probably did catch more “stuff” but because of that they were more restrictive to air flow (meaning the blower worked harder to actually move less air) which causes issues in both heating and cooling. Even if you don’t notice the issues it shortens the lifespan of the system. The 4” Filtretes weren’t as bad because the thicker filter has more surface area, the 1” filters were where I usually saw issues. The other thing was a 20”x20” filter, as an example, means it fits in a 20” x 20” space so the actual size is typically 19 1/2” or 19 3/4” and there are rails in the filter box to hold the filter. The Filtretes for whatever reason used to be anyway, it may have changed, an actual 20” 20”. The last HVAC company I worked for did some new construction and we had one contractor who had us install filter grills in the ceilings. I had numerous calls of new homeowners complaining that something was wrong with our return grills because their new filter wouldn’t fit. Every time it was one of those filters and I’d explain what was going on and tell them to buy literally any other filter and it will fit. Anyway, probably more then anyone ever wanted to know about furnace filters and I’m well aware that if your mind’s made up this didn’t convince anyone so back to your regularly scheduled and all that… ;)
