Supernova Bass project : Ovular content

Here are a couple of quickies to try on with the logo you suggested, I went bold and outlined one for effect. Trying to get the best resolution possible under the circumstances, which was to save them from a screen shot on the web. Not ideal. If someone has the font it would be a little sharper at this size, but when reduced it looks presentable.

The curve is pretty easy I think - but was wondering if you liked this now that you have a chance to see it. If you like the outline the fill can be pretty much any color.

Oh and a big CONGRATS on being in the band.

Thank you so much! Yes, that's more or less on track. Since it will be so small, a solid line is best (like the top one) In fact, once reduced it should look sufficiently presentable as is. Also, I won't be needing the capital 'S' so even better and the curve will be very soft. Do you have someone you use that makes decent decals? I've gone through quite a few suppliers with minimal success. If someone did high quality custom decals for a reasonable cost - they could clean up. I can't understand why this is so difficult.

I just sent the body & neck to be finished by Marty Bell. I love Pats work but lately his turnaround is up to a couple months and Marty can get it back within a few weeks or less. They are both top-notch finishers and it's more that Pat has a much bigger biz producing instruments as well as his finishing. So anyway, I'll need to have a decal in a week or so to send to Marty.

Hello JIO

Everyone in the pro end of this game uses inkjet printers on water slide decal paper. I don't have an inkjet printer so I took my Illustrator file down to my local "mavens" who do everything from huge architectural drawings to incredibly detailed fine art prints. Not sure of the dpi but they have VERY high resolution inkjet printers.

They are printing the decal on the water slide paper I provided. You carefully pull them out of the printer, let them dry completely about 20 minutes, and then spray them gently with clear lacquer to "set" them, two VERY light coats about 10 minutes apart.

The decals are all about resolution - if the resolution is good, they will look killer when reduced to actual size.

I think the resolution on the top one is fine. If you click on it you can see it is huge. I can eliminate the "S" for you in a matter of a minute. Would you like me to do that, and get the curve together on the top one?

Here is what I am using:

yes please!

Hello JIO

Sorry, got interrupted tonight by some unexpected but delightful guests.

The project was interesting - I found that the lettering kind of made a turn but kept on the same plane - I thought originally that it would be an arc.

Here is a pre-warp photo, so you can see how I worked this up in Illustrator:

PreWarp.png

I won't bore you with all the steps, but I tried warping and realized the 2nd 1/2 of the lettering looked better NOT warped.

Super Pre PS.png

So here is the graphic, I cleaned it up between the r and n a bit, this should be in the ball park.

Hey, if it isn't your dream, and I didn't quite get this right - you aren't gonna hurt my feelings. I enjoyed doing it and hope it works out alright for you.

The final version is transparent, so it is ready to go, in the off chance that all is cool right off the bat. If you need some tweaks that is fine too.

Just let me know.

New Final SN.png

Here it is closer to actual size:

If you decide to do it yourself, just get me the final width of the graphic. I can shrink down the bigger one to exact size you need with optimum resolution.

Fun project, best of luck with the rest of it!

Please, no need to apologize - you are so generous to help me out here! Seeing it in a straight line makes me think it could work like that. (no bend/arch) I'll play with it tomorrow and post my results.

Hey JIO

I think I prefer it straight also, but hard to tell without seeing it in the headstock.

Here is the straight version with no "S" in case you need it:

And here are a couple of ultra quickies to get an idea. Of course, I have no idea of the red icon is anywhere near the correct scale:

Yep - straight it will be. Due to the tuner collars it will need to shift toward the nut as the D collar would overlap. I'll have Marty position it so it's parallel with the strings. So I don't have an inkjet printer either. Can I take the big version you just sent me of the straight script along with the decal paper to Kinko's and they could do it? I'll need to order some of the Papilio. Thank's again - I owe you one!

Hey, my pleasure. I am not too technical when it comes to this graphics stuff. I always take my printer the illustrator file - as it has a lot of print options and they can maximize the quality.

i assume you have a mac somewhere - if so - I would open THE BIG ONE in PREVIEW and go to the TOOLS menu and select ADJUST SIZE. The original Performer decal was about 3.25" end to end. You can then keep it in pixels or change it to inches and scale it down to where it is the exact proper size. The key is to be SURE that the resolution at the bottom of that window stays close to 300 DPI - I think it now reads 299.99 - Make sure that doesn't change and you SHOULD be able to print it out from Preview onto the decal paper, and it should look really clear and good. If Preview changes it to web res of 72 it will probably look fuzzy, but maybe not - since it is a font it could be alright. Sometimes, for reasons I will never understand - when you reduce the size of a graphic Preview also changes the resolution.

Good luck with it and don't forget to bring the clear lacquer!

Thanks again - yes, I have some Stew Mac clear lac and can spray it in the parking lot!

I used inkjet waterslides in the past but now use laser printed ones. They don't need to be coated before applying. Paper costs the same as waterslide. My local print shop prints them for me for $0.39 an 8.5 x 11 sheet.

Thank you for this information - so will it work using a laserjet printer?

Search this on Ebay, lots of vendors:
laser waterslide decal paper

You have to use paper specifically made for laser printers. Laser bonds the waterproof toner to the decal, inkjet is water based ink. I've had problems with inkjet decals bleeding over time, laser is more permanent. Colors are also denser IME.

I used a water slide laser printed logo on the Reformer. It worked quite well, and has held up fine over the past year. Here's the link: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

Hey Mapleglo

Glad you tried them successfully. I was reading a lot of the comments about them and it seemed hit or miss to me on the full color ones due to the heat generated by the laser - some smearing and paper crinkling was reported. The results I read were mixed but it was general decal comments - not headstock decal comments. Some of them were very large, etc. If I had known you had good results I may have gone that way - I have a pretty nice HP color laser printer here. Although I will say - I have bought every type of laser CD label and have never found one that works well on a consistent basis, They always smear. It's a live and learn deal. If I don't like what comes back from the Color Group, I will get the laser water slide paper and take a shot. Thanks for this!

JIO, I had a few minutes this morning - so I made you a decal sheet so you won't waste any real estate on the decal paper. The sizes are approximate but I gave you seven different one ranging from around 2.25" X 4" in length. One of them should be just about right. These should be close to actual size, you should not have to reduce them but please double check me. This is all pre-coffee.

Should be ready to go on a transparent background.

If I may,

JIO- cool logo, really captures the "retro-Astro-nouveau-soul" concept I think you're going for. :D
I can see the Frigidaire logo influence, as well as the Ford Fairline, and others. Cool.

BassHappy- Nicely done. Good work, and I'm actually learning stuff too.

Thanks for the kind words wraub. I also feel that JIO has - as usual - chosen and locked into a feature on one of his creations - that will do nothing but inspire and add to - the overall effect that he is committed to creating in the final version of this project.

I feel grateful that I had a small part in simply facilitating what he had envisioned. It's so rare that anyone goes - "I want it to be exactly this". it is usually very nebulous and rightfully takes an incredible amount of back and forth. It's rare and refreshing when someone has a true vision - and knows exactly what they want.

But as a credit to JIO - he has been there and stayed all night - he is intimately familiar with the exact vision he has for this bass.
