The hole is 14mm.

According to Hipshot:
"The 3/8" diameter version fits basses with a headstock hole size of 14mm (9/16"). The 1/2" version fits basses with a hole size of 16mm (41/64")."

Took my H2 to a casual jam with some friends last night and it sounded and played really great. It's got a very different tone from the rest of my arsenal... very thick and full with both pickups up, but still gets some bite when you dig in. Changing your plucking/picking hand position makes a big difference in how the bass responds, too.

I have been mostly using this bass at home for some recording projects, so it was really nice to bring it out and play it through an actual amp rig.

On the plus side, I used my Huntington II at two gigs last week and really enjoyed playing it. My left hand is still adjusting to the shorter scale and at the first gig I often found myself sliding too far up the neck, etc. Second gig was much more comfortable though and I played much better.

Both were very quiet lounge-type gigs, so I didn't really get to crank anything up, but the overall tone was very nice. With both pickups on it's phat as hell, but still articulate. The piezo is neat for adding a little bit of a different character to the tone. Played finger style with the piezo engaged brings a bit of an upright vibe if you pluck up near the neck. Played with a pick the piezo almost comes across as a bit of overdrive.

I'm happy so far. Three more gigs in February with that band, and I'm thinking at this point that I'll be using the H-II on all of them.

I'm having the same issue even with string/bridge height adjustments. I have the H1 with no piezo and its very noticeable. That issue aside, both of my univox hi fliers (early phase 2 with p90's and phase 4 with humbuckers) and my Hofner very thin bass have a much more unique and well rounded sound... with the bottom end thump for which short scales are known. It would be interesting to hear people's comparisons to their other shortscales.

Sorry for not replying sooner, I got mixed up between this thread and the Supro Huntington Club thread.

Anyway, I tried lowering my pickups a few turns last week and this seems to have helped. It's much more even now, but I'm definitely spoiled by the pickup height adjustability on my P basses. :p

I did the same and it also helped a bit. Still not ideal. I'm thinking of returning it and seeing if I can win this used one I saw on eBay (which is a lot less than I paid) to see if the issue is hit or miss. The eBay one seems to be in new condition so I guess it can't hurt. All in all it plays so incredibly I'm willing to over look it.

Yeah, I find the neck really comfortable as well. Between lowering the pickups and a little compression, I don't find the pickup issue on the E string nearly as pronounced anymore. And I may just end up lowering the neck pickup a little more before I call it done.

RE my Huntington 3, a quick update...

I love, LOVE, LOVE the way this bass feels, and plays.

I swapped out the volume pots with slower taper ones as per Supro's recommendations (my tech did it and I have no idea what those pots are). That made me much happier.

Since I've been using a Mustang P/J exclusively before this, I'm going to compare it to that.

The neck on the H3 I noticed is pretty rock solid. I play a lot of FREEZING places and have to often readjust my tuning. I've been surprised that I no longer have to do that :). As stated, I love the feel - maybe the slightly thicker neck is working for me, or the satin finish? I love it though. It also pushes out LOTS more rich bottom. Fills a lot more of the low sonic palette. Has a ridiculous amount of highs and sizzle too, if I kick in the piezo. The only things I'm wrestling with a tiny little bit are what seems like the upper mids. I'm used to keeping my amp set fairly flat, and I've gotten very used to the Mustang. I think I'm guilty of trying to get this bass to sound like that bass and it ain't happening so quickly. I've been playing with my amp a lot, and still have a ways to go...

Pretty sure though this is going to become my #1 player. There's a lot of sound going on in that bass, and I have still to work with it. Surprisingly, for me, I'm finding myself leaning towards soloing the neck pickup. Something about the low end and cut in that thing that makes me smile. I want to open it up a bit more though, and tweak my amp to a setting that will allow me to solo the bridge pickup.

Oh yeah... and I almost forgot. Played hundreds of gigs in the past few years, and nobody ever says squat about my bass. No matter what bass I'm using (from Rics to Ps to blue sparkle Bongos). In the few gigs I've played with the Huntington, almost every single gig someone has come up to me and either complimented it, or asked about it. That thing is a looker, for sure.

I'm happy.

If you happen to run across those pot values, please post...

That sounds like something I might try on mine which has temporarily been displaced for awhile in favor of my old semi-homemade fretless that got a sparkly new AGC preamp.

I agree with your sentiments about the tone of this bass. I have a Mahogany H2 with piezo and love the super rich full tone. It's all kinds of phat, but still has enough clarity even without the piezo engaged. I think I like it best with both pickups full up, but soloing either one brings out a bit more midrange and helps give it a little extra cut when you need it.

Honestly I could have done without the piezo option for myself, but it's a neat extra feature that doesn't get in the way if you don't need it.

I love the chunky neck. It fills up the palm nicely without being too overbearing, and with the satin finish it's very smooth and doesn't stick at all.

I have both, and as others have said they do not sound exactly the same. With a different scale length, pickup and in my case strings, I did not expect them to. In some ways I like the H1 better then my P. You can get a large difference in tone on both by playing closer to the bridge or closer to the neck. The range is greater on the H1. It also has a lot more treble then the P and for the most part I roll the treble off quite a bit. The other thing I like is that the G string sounds more lively on th H1 and ther are no dead spots.
