It's refreshing to see a thread like this. Back in '05, when I joined Talkbass, there were so many posters who were trashing SWR for selling out to the evil devil, Fender. A lot were lamenting that the quality suffered and yada, yada, yada.

Personally, I had played for years, relying on different combinations of 15" speakers, mainly JBL and EV, but after playing a friend's 4x10, I decided to check out one for myself. My local shops had Peavey, SWR, and Ampeg. After A/Bing a Goliath III with an Ampeg 410 HLF, I was sold on the Goliath!
Full, clean lows and articulate mids and highs were the ticket for me, and the SWR delivered that in spades.

Shortly after my purchase, Hurricane Katrina drowned most of my amp gear (see pic below). I replaced the G III ASAP, and the following year, bought a 12Pack which gave me a different, but equally good tone. Unfortunately, I sold the 12Pack last year, but now regret doing so.

One thing the hurricane experience did do, was show me the build quality of the cabinet itself. Although the components and covering was ruined, I had a chance to inspect the joints and bracing of the cab and was very impressed. I still have it and am rebuilding it with the original PAS drivers (reconed).
Great sounding gear!

I have a triad I love. The studio like evenness of tone is great. I used to have a swr 350 head, but I sold it after getting blown out of band sessions volumewise. I now have it hooked up to one channel of a qsc amp. Thing is, to play with louder rock bands, I'd need like 4 of these. Rockers with desire for tone clarity really have a tough time selecting gear.

SM 900 circa 12/1992. I bought it for 86 bucks plus 50 in shipping. Didnt work when I bought it. replaced about 25 bucks worth of parts. Works as good as new.

Pre Fender Super redhead. Have to replace some power transistors. Everything else works. Eden speakers in this amp.

Just need a footswitch for the 900. Looking for a 4ohm 410 for it,maybe an older goliath II. Or maybe bagend for that melvin davis type tone.

in the past i've had: sm400
goliath 4x10 and 2x10 cabs
grand prix pre amp
big ben w/bag end speaker.
-i just purchased a bag end loaded big ben from bass northwest, should get to me next week.
i'm actually looking for another so i can run a pair (muahahaha, low end junkies unite!)...
best 18 i've ever used, really articulate, clear, not muddy whatsoever....
a surprisingly broad frequency response.
really light too!
2 with the appropriate power should level houses.
of course i'll post the pics when the rig comes together....

great to see an swr thread...although i own no swr as of today, i think i will be getting an sm-400s next week.... previous swr gear include an sm-900, (2) henry the 8x8's, Goliath III .... love those 8x8 cabs ....

I had an SM500 (fender made) in the past, playing through an Eden D410XLT.
The best tone I've had since I'm playing Bass: fat and punchy.
Sold them to buy AG Tri210 and El Whappo, nice gear but sounds not as good as expected when playing with my band! SM500+D410XLT sounded way better!
So now I hope to have a Megoliath soon to play it with my 400+!

I have a SWR MO' Bass head, and I love it. I am an effects junkie, so having them all there makes life simple and fun. However, I can't seem to find out why SWR discontinued them. Was it the price, reliablity, lack of sales...? I'm curious because I see a fair amount of them on the bay sold for parts only. It makes me wonder if they weren't reliable or if people didn't read the manual and did use proper cables. I found out, almost the hard way, that I cable I had wasn't compatible. It was cutting out, so I brought it to my tech, and as it turned out, with the speakon to 1/4 PJB cable I had, it made the transformer get RED hot, like egg friable hot. My tech rewired the connection on my cable, and there has been no issue at all. I also have a Goliath II cab, which is killer. Any info would be greatly appreciated. I've never signed up for a club, how do I go about that? Thanks!
