SX Ursa 6-string Jazz bass

But give me some credit! I really wanted to order TWO of them! The plan, of course, would be to take the frets out of one and end up with fretted and fretless Fender-like "bar-bass" six strings. But I didn't want to go too wild so I played it conservative and got one to look at first. If I love it (or even if it's moderately Fenderish-OK) I'll then get another and which ever one has the crappiest frets will become the fretless!

Naturally now I'm in "waiting for new bass day" mode.

PS. while searching 6 string basses as a result of Bass GAS I took one more look at the Bongo SH 6 string. Gads! That is one fine "must have" bass! I'm dying to own one! However, given that the price is a mere TEN TIMES that of the SX I think it will have to wait...

I too saw that 2 had been bought but JZ beat me to asking who. I'm anxiously awaiting your review, as well as the definitive answer to the question most of us want to know, "What IS the string spacing."

If your review is favorable (which I strongly suspect it will be), I will be facing a difficult decision. I want one, no question about it, but ummmm, I'd like one in LPB (that should come as no surpise to anyone who has seen my sextuplets). However, I know that sometimes new and unusual models show up on Rondo and as soon as people find out that they are good, they QUICKLY get bought up! I have missed out on some of those models, and have learned my lesson. So, I will have to decide whether to wait and see what other colors are coming, if any, or get one immediately before they are all gone. :hmm:

Now that would be the width of the WHOLE bridge not the strings width. So 3 3/4 is not unreasonable if string width is 3.2 inches. This does not seem to have 1/2" spacing at the bridge no matter how you figure it.

I did the same calculation you did. You know the NECK width at the nut and the NECK width at the 12th fret, you can extrapolate approximately what the "NECK" width would be at the bridge. You lose around 0.1" of neck on the outsides of each outer strings, leaving you with approximately 3.55" string width at the bridge. Divide by 5, you get ~0.71 or about 18mm string spacing at the bridge. I didn't take into account the thickness of the strings, so this amounts to a "center-string to center string" spacing rather than the gap distance between strings. Actual string gaps from string to string will be more like 17 to 17.2mm probably.

Now, once I buy one of these badboys and put calipers to the actual strings we'll know for sure! :smug:

The only two questions I asked Kurt were how did the SX Ursa 6'er compare with the Douglas WOB 826 I had purchased a few months ago and if the 1/2inch string spacing was correctly listed. In his reply that I posted on this thread earlier he confirmed the 1/2 saying it was a little less than 18mm. Looking back at my post where I copied and pasted his email reply, I now see where everyone is confused on the spacing. He must have meant 13mm instead of the 18mm he typed. Which would make sense seeing that 1/2 inch spacing would be closer to 13mm than 18mm. It was a typo. I apologize for the confusion everyone.

What was the actual string spacing of your new Douglas? How do you feel about a 1/2" string spacing at the bridge? That seems pretty tight and definitely contradicts the estimate I came up with earlier, so maybe there's another typo in the online listing somewhere...maybe it's 2 15/16 at the 20th fret instead of the 12th fret as the listing seems to indicate.

You are welcome for the input. The Douglas is 11/16 at the bridge and is tight, especially if you are like me and came from playing exclusively 4 stringers. It took me about three weeks of hard practice to get used to the neck width and string spacing.

It's a hard decision for me as far as a second 6'er goes because of how good of a bass the Douglas is for the money. Without testing the SX URSA 6'er, I'll have to say the Douglas WOB 826 is one of the best low end 6'ers out there. It's hard for me to lay it down now for another six string. But I do need a back up for it and may pull the trigger on the SX URSA sometime soon. With Rondo's prices and their awesome return policy, you can't really lose at all.:D

Ummm, lte's see, the SJBs with the rosewood blocked neck (or was it just a separate rosewood blocked neck, whatever it was, I snoozed and losed), I missed out on the matching headstock LPB SJBs the first time around, and the natural SJB LTDs. That's all I can remember right now. Why do you ask?

Dabbler, your posts about the Douglas WOB 826 convinced me that it was a good 6'er and you were right about it. I love that bass, my only mods, if you call them that were a new set of Ernie Ball strings and she was good to go.

I'm considering another 6'er from Rondo. Don't know if it's going to be the SX Ursa or one of the Brices. A bassist really can't lose with Rondo music at all.
