synth lovers 2015!!

I must admit I'd have to agree with Gastric here.

To me it sounds a bit meh too, like a cheap toy synth.

Not to put anyone off the exitement, it's just not for me.

To each his own.

It doesn't help much either the guy in the video is more focused on showing off instead of playing something that compliments the sounds, and when finally a more atmospheric sound shows up, some ambient like parts could be created out from, he just skips quickly through it cause then he can't show his amazing, fast, funky riff, one would think we had got by that point.

The initial part where he shows how you can create weird synth noise by touching the end tip of the jack stick is more interesting than the rest of the video.

The guy is not showing off. The whole point of his playing is to demonstrate how well it tracks. That's one of the MOST important things with bass synth/octave pedals/multis.

So it is not important to get an idea how it actually sounds now?

I would have thought we had got the idea of how well it tracks after the first time he played his riff.

Come on dude, he showcased a few sounds, you want him to give you an 8 hour in depth demo where he shows all the sounds the thing has? Maybe he should have a team help him to record like 100 hours of footage, then spend 6 months editing the whole thing into a comprehensive demo? Maybe get James Cameron to direct it? Maybe we can get Roland to come up with 3 million in financing for the film.

LOL

For seriousness. Even with the lack of, what some consider, proper demo qualities it sounds better than a Zoom Synth patch and the tracking looks like it holds up pretty good to his MASSIVE SKILLS OF BASSDOM.

:roflmao: I have been away for a lil bit and I forgot how much fun and info is to be had here

I assume the Boss does this, but does the Markbass still not let you get rid of the clean sound of the bass? That was the one big bummer for me. Might have gotten one at one time if it would have let you.

That SY-300 looks like it tracks really well, no way can you slap that fast on most synth pedals with any hope of tracking!

I bet you could beat it with a pick attached to a drill.

Actually I am a bit disappointed he didn't put it through this crucial make it or break it test of all good synths.

It might even have had come out better sounding, had he done this :woot:

Boss isn't the hippest company on earth (*) , but that doesn't' mean you can't use their stuff to make good-sounding music. If this thing sounds half as good as eg a 303 or an SH-101, combined with the excellent tracking it seems to have than I'm the happiest bassplayer in the world - I've been dreaming about a pedal like this for over 10 years now.

(*) compare the [boss tone central] sy-300 video's to whatever MXR pedal demo there is...

I'm not saying you can't use it.

My guess is that it would be perfect for cheesy 80's pop/electro pop for example.

And even crappy sounds has their uses.

Hell, I am a big fan of crappy sound myself, I just happen to love the kind of crappy cheap analog equipment make.

Never been a big fan of the kind of sterile digital sound, unless you really make a point out of using it, and not try to emulate analog equipment badly and sort of end up sitting between two chairs.

But as I said, to each their own.

It has a MIDI out, and newer Minimoogs have a full MIDI implementation. I find the SY-300 interesting, but more as a controller than anything else.

The SY-300 does not do pitch to MIDI conversion. I think you can send program change/control change to other devices when you select patches/operate a connected controller on the SY-300, and you can output MIDI Clock. If you plan to use the SY-300 mainly as a controller I think there are better and cheaper options out there. With that said I do think it will be useful to some people as a midi controller who don't own a better option.

Roland/Boss has made a ton of classic gear and has greatly advanced music technology. Just because they don't make a great dirt pedal for bass doesn't mean they're behind the times by any means.

Hmm, that's interesting - I hadn't known that, and now having looked I see that the MIDI implementation is actually quite limited. That totally takes it off my list of stuff to look at.

Thanks for the heads-up.

I disagree, it just isn't a pitch to midi converter. Between the other midi capable pedals on my board the MIDI features on the Boss are more thourough than my Mobius or H9 for example.

Oh, I'm not saying it's a bad product, just not something that would meet my needs considering all of the other synth gear I own. For the moment, I've got a Peavey Midibase to cover the pitch-to-MIDI side of things, but it's a pretty old unit and parts are hard to come by, and the newer Industrial Radio gear is kinda pricey.

The SY-300 is full of control options,
6 Assigns per pedal per patch, so if you have 5 CTL footswitches (incl 2 external), 3 wave pedal assigns, and 6 midi assigns.
That gives you up to 39 Assignable real time controls per patch.

Each of the 3 polyphonic Oscillators has a 16 step sequencer.

I'm going through the full midi spec at the moment (79 pages) punching the data for building a SY-300FloorBoard editor.
The patch sysx data file build is at 2648 bytes in size, so that is about over 2200 adjustable parameters inside the box for the 3 synths, effects and pedal controls.

Most of the demo tunes I have heard seem to have tones made from guys that don't know how to program analog type synth tones, making cheezy 80's sounds, or squelchy fart filter noise.

I know it's capable of a lot more..
