TalkBass Trade Gone Bad

As it turns out, the 51 reissue bass I received in this trade has an issue with the truss rod. The weather warmed up in my local and the neck bowed. I tried to tighten the truss rod to take out the bow and discovered it would not budge, not even a smidgen. I am stuck with a crappy player - neck on this bass. A functional, not an cosmetic issue at that.

I wish I would have known this as I would not have made this trade. Arizona told me the bass was all good with no issues. Probably the reason he unloaded on me about the bass I traded to protect himself from the unseen issue with his trade.

so whats up with sending the basses back to each other now?
if the OP wants to do that of course...

AJ claims he was sent the first two pictures in his OP, and a full frontal. None of these show the added 'Relic wear', in reality veriy poorly hacked holes in the finish, painted over, that have never appeared on a factory Relic.

Left to the court of public opinion, I'm pretty sure I could guess who gets the benefit of the doubt here.

Why didn't LAG respond with the same info he did here about the wear, instead of initially throwing the supposed missing PUP issue back at the OP and then not responding further?

So LAG, let's get this straight.....you are upset (and feel duped) because you have refused to trade back a bass that supposedly has a fouled truss rod? Seriously???

Oh...let's not forget about the less than honest method used to acquire said "broken bass". Lastly, 4 months to figure out a truss rod is broken (if it is at all) is on you.

In my opinion, in an amicable trade or sale (not this one, obviously)....once a buyer gives me the "all clear" I confirm the bass arrived in the condition as advertised/expected AND proper working order. After I have confirmed he is satisfied with the sale, what ever issues pop up after that are on them. So if LAG gave the OP any sort of "all good, I'm happy with the bass" message then one would have to assume that LAG was happy with the bass in its present condition and had checked the bass over to his standard (at the time). Furthermore, the OP shouldn't be held liable for a buyers ignorance/stupidly by not checking the proper operation of a truss rod for 4 months. Checking for proper truss rod is day 1 of getting a new bass. It's more important than plugging it in IMO. Likewise, nor should a seller be held liable for ANY effect the change of climate has on neck. Just saying.....

The finish issues could have (and should have) been handled quite differently. Let's assume that the factory -vs- non-factory added relicing was left for interpretation. LAG could have simply offered to untrade but suggest AJ reimburse for all shipping expenses. Yah, AJ would have been out a few bucks. However, he would have got his bass back. LAG could have used the subjective nature of the debate to save face and untrade with no out of expenses to him. The unwillingness to negotiate an amibcable resolution (and dissapearance + unforeseen ressurection) is what really makes like LAG seem like the big turd in this here toilet bowl.

A light inside a refrigerator doesn't work when the refrigerator door is closed period. Now all is possible. Maybe LAG never opened the case to look at the bass since he got it from the previous owner and he sent the pictures he had received from the previous owner....Naw I don't think so... And for the Sharpie comment, the permanent marker called Sharpie was born in 1964 and Fender sold to CBS in 1965 so it is possible.

It's easier for the "buyer to beware" when you're holding the merchandise in your hands prior to purchase, than it is when it shows up on your doorstep.

Well, if we take them both at their word that they were unaware of any issues/problems at the time of the trade, neither is likely to be happy about getting their old bass back either: One has learned that the truss rod is broken on his bass, and the other has learned that his has a bunch of gouges that aren't supposed to be there.

Seriously, I'm REALLY HAPPY :hyper: that we all know who he is, because I would NEVER :rollno: do a deal with this person :vomit: ... EVER.
(By the way... I LOVE that he plays bass in his church's band... HILARIOUS! I'll bet he's a "well respected member of the congregation." ...a regular pillar of the community.)
They should trade back; but it's pretty clear by the very late, and completely-overflowing-with-b.s response from LAG that this isn't going to happen.
OP... you got screwed, dude. I wish I could wave a magic wand and undo all of this for you... your '51 was really pretty.
Yuck... this is unfortunate... but, I must say, this whole thing leaves me feeling VERY GOOD about having just sold a bass... on Reverb.com.
(and, I was EXTREMELY THOROUGH with regard to describing the condition of the instrument, as well as any-and-all modifications -- because that's how you do good business with a fellow brother-in-bass)
