I've been tracking trends on Talkbass for a while now and would like to share what I've learned in the form of a frequently asked questions doc. If it's helpful, maybe it can become a sticky thread to help people with their research.
Talkbass Double Bass Forums Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q: How do I post sound clips in the Recordings forum?
A: Get a teacher!
Q: Which is better German bow or French?
A: German! No French! No German! Get a teacher!
Q: Hey, maybe this has been covered before, but what are the best strings for my bass?
A: Get a teacher. Obligatos! Get a teacher! No way, it's Corellis! Get a teacher! Man, what every happened to Golden Spirals? Get a teacher!
Q: Knock Knock
A: GET A TEACHER!
Q: Hey, I'm getting this weird buzzing sound in 5th position.
A: Seriously, Obligatos are the greatest strings ever. They're magic, I really didn't know how to play the bass until I put Obligatos on and now I'm first chair in the Pawtucket Philharmonic.
Q: Hey does anyone know the changes to Giant Steps?
A: Get a teacher. No, he doesn't need a teacher, he just needs to install the Revolution Solo pickup, it's simply unparalled for clarity. Like my bass only louder and in-tune with perfect time. No seriously, get a teacher or I'll kick your ass.
Q: Hey, maybe this has been covered, but what's the best string for my bass?
A: Crap, you again?
Q: Does anyone know where I could get a standup bass for $300? Nothing fancy, just something really good, that sounds and plays good and doesn't have any problems. I could possibly go as high as $325.
A: Maybe your teacher has some advice for you about that.
Q: Should I put some fret marks on the fret board.
A: Yeah, definitely. Put them each 1 inch apart and you'll be fine.
Q: Excuse me, can you tell me where the men's room is?
A: Get a teacher.
Q: Has anybody played a Shen Willow bass?
A: When Stanley Clarke dropped by and played my $150,000 250 year old English bass with ebony restoration by blah, blah, blah, attached pix...
Q: Hey which steel strings sound exactly like old school, plain gut strings
A: All of them. Exactly.
Q: Did anyone hear who won the Metropolis SO audition?
A:
Anonymous Troll #1: Joe Blow completely dominated the audition, but one of the judges hates his hair, so they cut him.
Anonymous Troll #2: Dan McBasserson won. Joe Blow was drunk and urinated all over the floor.
Anonymous Troll #1: I'm tired of your lies and rumors. Dan McBasserson only won because he had a voodoo doll of Joe Blow and he slept with all of the judges.
Rational Observer: The orchestra website press release says that Pietro Bassoni won.
Anonymous troll #2: That's just a typo, they'll be forced to admit that Dan won soon.
Q: I've been thinking about getting one of those Ronzoni upright basses that I see on eBay. They sell for $299 shipped, come in four colors and include a set of weedwacker strings along with an actual weedwacker and a balsa wood bow (although I don't really need a bow). Good idea? Am I on the right track?
A: OMG SSDD! FYI: CCB=POS but then again YMMV. Hope this helps. (LMFAO).
