TC Electronic RH450, RS210, RS212 Review Thread

I also suggest that you change the preset frequencies on the eq's and build a patch that works for you. I don't like the center frequency's they choose so I think it is good to change them in conjunction with tweaking the tube tone. Then you can get that custom sound that kicks ass. And connecting my Pod Pro xt through this amp in to any good cabinets gives me more volume than anyone could stand me playing with. And it never gets hot.

Hey Dr Funk, I'm really curious to hear your comparison of the two amps, please do come back to us with your impressions!
I had ordered a shuttle 9 but it was back ordered and the wait became too long as the Fender rep kept pushing the delivery date back so I went with the RH450. I really like it so far but am still wondering about the Genz.

The Genz heads definitely have a clarity and articulation about them. If that's your thing, then they make a lot of sense. The RH450 is more on the other end of the spectrum. Certainly not "muddy or old-school", but they have a retro feel with a bit of a modern edge. You can change the frequency points, especially the treble, so that you can dial in that high-end sparkle that comes out of the box with the Genz heads.

FWIW, I think either head can sound better than the other in certain situations or acoustical environments.

I think your right about that for sure Jason.

Clark I agree about the center frequencies. I have my preset 2 with the same frequency centers that Rocco uses in the Staccato 51. Preset #3 has my own custom set of centers which so far is my favorite.
This RH450 just screams Ampeg to me coloration wise. I can hear why all the Ampeg endorsers are jumping ship to TC though. :eyebrow:

To me it only does when the Tubetone is dialed up past about 9 o'clock, and even then it's still got it's own thing going. I've never been a big Ampeg fan, so I don't think I'd care for the RH450 if it were really that much like an Ampeg.

Id also really like to know what you think. I have a Shuttle 9.0 on deposit for when they arrive in the UK....but a lot of people are pushing the TC.

I want the Shuttle as its small, very very light, hifi and crisp, and 500W into 8 ohm....thus my mid sized 8 ohm cabs are now 1 cab solutions as well as big stacks when used together.

My gripe with the 450 is that at 8 ohms....isnt it just around 300W? I mean, thats loud, and I know the RH sounds loud anyway, but surely it cannot compete with Genz 500W?! And 900W at 4 ohms must smoke it....

Any ideas?

I find the TC prices, for a solid state micro, quite high. I dont mind paying a grand for a boutique all tube amp head, but £900 ish for a solid state is quite expensive...despite all the features.

Im not slating it, im just commenting. I like what TC have done.

First of all the TC is damn loud once you tweak the eq for you cabs and bass. I love the sound of the Genz but it is a one trick pony. And if you are looking for just one solid tone for your live sound It is a good choice. I have become addicted to the presets in the TC, and being able to have three sounds at my instant recall for slap, solo, and basic tone just rocks. or even an overdriven preset with the great tubetone knob. There is great videos of both demoed on You tube. That will help you decide. And a note on watts , I had a SM900 SWR (900w) for a long time and though it sounded good , once I tried a 400w Thunderfunk I realized it is more about the tone than the power because the Thunderfunk KILLED with its punchy full sound over the SM900. I play my TC through a Ampeg 6 x 10 at a casino I regularly play at in a 600 seat room playing LOUD dance music and can barley turn up past 10 o'clock on my volume knob with out being told I am a bit loud (it sounds and feels good loud!)

Oh I totally agree Tone is the main factor....but I already have an Orange AD200b Mk3 which is 200 Watt all tube....and those tube watts destroy most solid state heads near 500/600W, it is the king of tone!

The main reason wanted to go for the Genz was the clean tone, with the nice grit option with the pre, and the fact its tiny and 900W...its a good amp to compare to my MB LM3 and Orange. All three totally different. I would like an RH...but with higher wattage for the price.

The RH450's tone is comletely clean as well if the Tubetone is turned off. But it doesn't have the glassy top-end and upper-mid articulation like the Genz heads do. You dial that in to some extent if you want, so it really depends on where you want to start from.

I just got my RH450 today and I'm really impressed. Only had it a few hours so still playing around. Man this amp does everything and it's really loud. It sounds great with my Berg HS410 too.

Thanks to Chuck and John at Bass Emporium in Austin for taking a lot of time to show this amp off to me ... I was down there recently and I had to order one after hearing it through their HS410 :D

I got the bag too but I'm not really a bag-guy and might get something else to haul it in. It's really well made but I think I'd rather have a hard case or rack it.

Question... and the manual doesn't clarify either.

My mixer is a Mackie 1604vlz.
We use the 48v Phantom Power for our horn's clip mics. The balanced buss has the 48v through all the channels when engaged and cannot isolate by channel.

So, I'm trying to find out if the RH450 is at risk if I use the DI on the amp? I have a Radial JDI I can use but I'd like to utilize the amp's nice DI if possible. The RH450 has a type of transformer but I don't know if it's like a Jenson that will protect an amp from 48v.

Chuck as Bass Emporium has emailed that very question to TC but no response yet. Maybe they are testing it out :hyper:

I've used mine on lines with Phantom power enabled. No problem. Most any DI had better have this protection in this day and age, and TC is no exception.

Thanks for the reply Jason. I agree about this "day and age" but I'd rather be safe than sorry. Years back I had run into this problem with some other preamp and amp. There was as disclosure on one piece and never got a straight answer from the manufacturer on the other. Both top notch products too. That's when I bought the JDI with the Jensen. I always take it with me anyway.

The thing that concerns me is that my mixer can't isolate the balanced channels and many other brands can, so that's why I need to be careful. I'm really liking the RH450 but don't have a gig until 12-5. Can't wait.

As I mentioned the RH450 is a great match with the HS410. I'm having a bit of difficulty finding my working tone into the Schro 15L+. I always have to tweak with this cab so I'm not surprised. It does generally work well in the mix though and I need a small loud cab for most of my gigs. Might have to continue to use my MB TA501 for that cab ...

Yeah. At this one gig I play at, they have a DI on the floor taking Phantom power. I unplug it and go straight into my RH450 when I show up, then put it back on the DI box when I leave. I think you're safe! Just make sure you plug into the Direct Out, not the Digitial Out!
