TC Electronic RH750 ???!??

OK, this is playing it through an AE410 with a Fender Roscoe Beck V.

The frequencies are:

Bass: 100 hz (9 clicks left)

Low Mid: 400 hz (default - 0 clicks)

High Mid: 800 hz (default - 0 clicks)

Treble: 1,600 hz (0 clicks, but not default, which is 8 clicks right)

Level settings: All four at 3 o'clock - 6 clicks right.

Tube Tone at minimum - adjust to taste.

Compressor at 9 o'clock.

One of the things I have to get used to is that this EQ is nothing like the Eden stack, where "a little dab'll do ya." It's taking some big-ass dabs to get where I like to be, but I'm getting there.

The cab seems to make a significant difference, too. I haven't got the AE212 dialed in with it exactly where I want it to be yet.

See, now here's some very cool things, I can dial in Munji's recipe and save it on my presets.

Even though my lovely and very patient wife is on a conference call upstairs, I can check this against my preset with the headphones. There's no way I can run the cabs until tonight.

One thing I really wanted was the adjustable eq centers. The Gk falls short in the eq department. I usually want a bump at 500, the GK will only scoop that frequency with the contour.

I'll mess around with the comp and tweeter tone and see what I come up with.
 
45 minutes of testing will give me ear fatigue.

One thing I had yet to try was the DI out function on the TC. I usually practice with a yamaha mixer MG102c, my MXR M-80 bass di, XLR, to the board, headphones. The board handles all my other playback devices. A surprisingly good sounding setup.

I ran the TC Di over to the board and listened to the TC direct from the headphone jack on the amp, then switched the headphones over to the board. Next I messed with the pre/post eq switch.

Some cool things: when you plug in the headphones to the amp, the fan powers down and the output to cabs is muted. Headphone volume is controlled by the master. Signal still goes to the FOH board. The mute switch quiets both speaker output and the Di send to FOH.

The DI send post eq is exactly the sound you have running on the amp. Switch to pre eq and all of a sudden there's my bass! Clean and deep down to the lowest notes. All I needed to do was get the TC out of the way. Switch back to post eq and the wet blanket is back. UH OH!

I just can not get a clean sound out of this thing. I can, however, send a clean signal to the board. Problem is I don't need the RH750 to do that

I think my mail order bride might be taking the the UPS truck home. But not before I give her a good hard ride tonight. She better shine.

Messing with the eq gave me an idea of the huge range of tones the TC can do. But you have to like a little dirt in everything. Munji's settings opened the range up quite a bit and improved the lows. But not down past low E. It doesn't handle any of the B strings on the Dingwalls.
 
When I first got the RH750 the lack of hifi irked me, but the more I gigged the more it grew on me. Especially for the Classic Rock band. The P&W group is all direct and its clean there.

I need to try one of these GKs though. I'd like to hear a little cleaner dealio and see what I am missing.
 
Singlemalt -- sounds like you've given this thing the ol' British try and it doesn't quite do it for you. If TCE made an amp with the same interface and "add-ons" but with a wide, clean voice, I'd be all over it for my double bass. I like what the RH450 does for bass guitar, and my EUB, and while it may be a bit harsh to call it a one trick pony (which you're not doing, I know), it definitely has its thing. I'm thinking Genz Shuttle or EA iAmp for my next acquisition, not to replace the TCE, but to supplement it.

Do you have the option to keep both?

Yeah, muni moved the eq center of the bass control down ( shift mode) then boosted all the eq's to 3 o'clock. Moving the bass frequency opened up the range.

I'm not ready to give up quite yet.

But a walk in the woods with the dogs to mull things over has the TC feeling like a step backwards. When my awesome sounding basses resurface when I bypass the TC, what's the point? Not supporting the lows I worked so hard to get, ( building fEarfuls takes a good bit of dough, and lots of hours in the shop) isn't going to cut it.

I've been down the vintage tube amp road, and I want that option, but I want all the other stuff too. Seems like its way easier to ad dirt than take it out.

The whole new amp thing started when I gathered up everything musical equipment-wise that wasn't earning it's keep and sold it. That's the new rule around here. If I don't love it enough to use it everyday, it's gone.

I can hedge my bets with the trial periods.

No, the nine clicks left is setting the bass frequency at 100 hz. You do that with the shift button engaged. Once you set the frequency, undo the shift button and boost the bass six clicks. Same thing with the treble. The RH750 comes from the factory with the treble frequency at something like 4,000 hz, which is eight clicks right. You have to push the shift button and turn the treble frequency down to 1,600 hz, which is zero clicks (centered). Again, then disengage the shift button and boost the treble six clicks to the right.

The RH heads seem to have their hi pass filter set quite high. I describe the tone as the head kind of emulating the response of a sealed multi-10 cab, regardless of the type of cab you are using.

The low end sounds good, but it is a bit compressed and even with the shelving bass boosted quite a bit (remember, lowering a shelving start point will not result in more deep bass being boosted, just less upper bass!), these heads would still be considered more 'punchy sounding' than big.

With some cabs that are tightly voiced (like the AE410 or the RS210), you don't really notice this, and the head sound great. If you play the head through a cab that has the capability of really pumping on the low end (AE212, fEarful, Acme, EpifaniUL, etc.) you can really miss that last 5 or 10 hz down in some contexts.

IMO and IME. I think again this is part of their goal of kind of building a vintage rig type tone into the amp.
 
you're right I've tried my RH750 with my friend Epifani UL410 and I got more punch than the low boom. I'm thinking about maybe trying the new GK MB800

When I asked TCE about their high-pass filter (on the RH450) back in April, I got this response:

The HPF is at approx. 15hz. So much lower than most cabinets are able to go. Its basically just there to avoid DC content and so we don't use any 'energy' trying to reproduce the lowest frequencies.

Rune didn't mention (although I asked) what the slope was like, i.e. where the -1, -3 and -10 dB points were. Nevertheless, it would be a pretty gentle slope up from a -10 dB point at 15 Hz (the "worst-case scenario") for the HPF to be having this effect on your low end. It's certainly there, and it's part of what makes the TCE tone what it is (for better or worse), but I don't think it's the "hard-wired" HPF that does it.

+1 Lots of things go into the voicing of the low end, and I kind of use the term 'hi pass' to define how low an amp actually delivers meaningful power. Whatever the case is, the TC amps roll off early and hard, just like a sealed 10 cab.

I do remember on the 'tweaker' test that I was part of that the variable hi pass in the software did seem to widen the low end, but that has been quite a while, and who knows what was actually going on with that circuit.
 
Hi pass is the wrong term for sure. You could say low end shelving maybe, but really what's going on here is (I strongly suspect) what seems to go on in the Markbass heads (albeit likely to a lesser degree) -- compression setting in earlier down low due to the greater demands.

Totally different thing than the Markbass heads IME. The Markbass heads are wide open, deep and even, and will eventually compress when driven beyond their limits.

The TC heads have that compression and attenuation built in at all volumes, and actually stay pretty even when pushed very hard, due to the more advanced limiting circuit (to my ear).

Whatever the circuit is, there is less deep bass coming out of the amp at any volume that most heads to my ear. Again, the hi pass control on the voicing software that we were given for the tweaker test did allow you to open up the deep low end a bit, so it seems to be something that is in the design and voicing goal, versus some sort of issue with power or limiting.
