TC Electronics "Epic Fail"

It also depends on if the amp is gigged, toured, etc.

A 37 year old bass amp that is capable of playing out is likely damn heavy. No way I'm carrying that on 100+ gigs a year. Instead I have a pair of 6lb class D heads that cover any situation I need. If one fails I've got a backup. If/when they die I'll replace them. Plenty of old stuff that isn't reliable and requires service. Unless you use it as a doorstop :D

Yep been gigged and toured many times.

Son, 6lbs is the weight of the wheels on my Ampeg 810e

and I used 2 of those, yes 2
when you carry 330 pounds of cabinet.
A stupid little 30 pound solid state amp is a feather.

In my "old" age I too, needed to lighten up my rig.
So I cut the weight in half and now use 1 165pound 810E

just think my amp was working for 36.4 years before he bought his TC.
For sure it did another 6months, and then his TC broke...oh well
mine still works. it is light enough.
Has more power and its 2ohm stable in fact its 1.5ohms stable
and I have been running it on those loads for awhile.

You want to use it as a doorstop?
hah hah, thats why you dont own it son.
I do

please buy all the lightest amps you can, more vintage for me.

I'm really glad he didn't call me "Son," but at least he uses Ampeg stuff.

:D

I don't know...I actually like the sound of the micros over the big iron solid state amps so it was an easy switchover for me. I've talked about it with folks on here, and there's really no reason why they can't be as robust as anything out there. Nobody wants to rent them from backline companies, but sound companies at big gigs certainly have racks of class D amps these days, and it's very rare you see folks lugging the big stuff anymore. I'd say if it's good enough to survive in their world, it can be good enough for us. I do know a high mid-level local soundguy who clings to his old iron amps and he says it's for sonic reasons, but I think he's just cheap ;)

FWIW, I had a similarly horrible TC customer service experience last year. I won't bore everyone with the details again, but essentially I had to go to Uffe to get resolution. Everyone below him that I talked to was incompetent and rude to an extreme.

Keeping in mind that some companies discontinue product runs and that this company is one of them is important.

Another important thing to note with TC is that some of their foreign product runs are no longer tech supported and the staff at TC either aren't very familiar or aren't at all familiar with unsupported gear. That being said, TC's heads aren't unsupported reissues that were made quickly and cheaply.

These are all crucial things to be able to consider when weighing second hand customer service issues.

I don't subscribe to the philosophy that the customer is always right, so if a product is unsupported then I'm out of luck. If I'm going to drop a bunch of cash on an amp I'm going to want to be sure that I can keep it going for years after the warranty period ends.

I suppose that advantage goes to G-K and Peavey (maybe Hartke). The same man that started the company still owns and runs it. Obsolete?
Hardly obsolete. Quite commendable. But if the same guy who owned Ampeg in the early 60's ran it in the late 60's, we would have never had the SVT, so in that case I was all for him retiring ;) Larry and Mr. Gallien don't seem to be suffering from an aversion to high power amps, at least.

This post is SO condescending. :rollno:

Sorry "son" you are not that special and neither is your opinion.:o

yah maybe I was a little harsh, but I do have alot of pride in my stuff.
Maybe i'm a little lucky with my gear.
I sure I seem like a asshat, most likely getting on peoples nerves.

But as hard as it might seem, I actually do care about some random guy on the internet. Especially any fellow bass player.
I would never like a amp to die on you, Ive had a huge collection of problems with tube amps especially on tour.

A old iron solid state might not be for everyone. But they are so Light to me. A 80 to 90 pound SVT is heavy ok, I had those too.
So a 20 to 40 pound amp is just so light to me.

I just know what has worked for me, a old iron solid state.
Which is a ridiculous statement, really im actually more of a tube guy. But I see so many threads about broken and overheating class D's. I think man why cant they just sluff the extra weight and get some well known workhorse, Instead of risking some new design. It really does pay off, Even a light neo cabinet is going to be 40 to 60 pounds. So why would a 20 or 30 pound head bother you.

I'd rather see you sluff a extra 10 to 15 pounds, so you dont end up standing on stage with a broken amp that takes 2 months to fix.

and if you buy a switch mode class D and it overheats at 4ohms
. sorry because mine dont at 1.5ohms. and I would never as a friend let you buy a overheating 4ohm class D amp.

yah see its just a matter of time before a TC thread goes sour.
there is rules about that.

what you said is disrespectful, what I said was being a show off asshat.

be careful man I'm not a screamer, I wont say anything.
But that would not go well with a mod.
