TC Electronics RebelHead 450 - Rebel with a Cause

Yep, B&O are doing a nice job with their ICE power modules. Our is, however, TC in-house designed from the grounds up, which allow us to do a couple of nice tweaks and tricks in the power section that does not come with the average commodity Class D amp module.

nice to chat with you. Have been a big fan since I first got a tc chorus pedal in about 1994 or so. I currently use one of your older parametric EQ's (2241) in my rig. Amazing that you're doing this bass amp, with your own amp module, and it looks absolutely stunning. Finally, somebody does a proper bass line array - it only took forty years! I certainly hope it sounds as good as it looks - I have such faith in your company. I'd like to make a few requests:

1) Double the power, with a stereo/biamp/bridged mono convertible version with a dedicated digital multi-effect unit built in, and have two identical channels for different basses (fretless and fretted).

2) The string bass players would probably also love a dedicated teeny-weeny combo amp unit with mike inputs and probably a single 10" or 12".

3) Have a 15" option to go with the 2x10 and 2x12 cabs for those who like extended bottom. And a single 10/12 option.

4) Put a selectable/defeatable high-pass filter in your chorus unit!

5) B System - make it a good one! And not so heavy, please.

And a BIG thank you for NOT going through with the Gibson deal - thank you thank you thank you! They have RUINED so many companies, I am so glad yours is not going to be on that list. And I don't expect you to comment on this part of my post.

:hiding:

Thank you for all the fabulous equipment over the years.

Cheers,
Cameron

Hey guys, nice to chat to you as well, and thanks for the nice compliments and trust - I sure hope (and believe) we can live up to it :-)

Nice detailed wish list, I will definitely copy that into my ideas pool.

About the amp module. I can elaborate, but didn't want to (mis)-use forum space for too commercial stuff. Naturally I do tend to get carried away with the stuff that I work with every day :-)

So just a couple of quick comments: In addition to obviously taking care to voice the amp to be good bass amp, we designed a circuit called Active Power Management that essentially allows us to squeeze more power out of the module without ending up in nasty clipping. I am pretty sure that you will agree that it is real 450w when you get a chance to hear it.

And from that marketing paper, which has no author or references:

"The result is an amp that, regardless of how hard it is pushed, will not go into ‘transistor’ clipping
and will have a higher perceived level pr. Watt similar to what is known as ‘tube watt’."

:(

You can't categorize all SS amps to have the behaviors describe described in this marketing paper.

Give other amp manufacturers some credit that they know what they're doing.

You'll get a fair review by Bass Gear Magazine. You should get them one to review ASAP.

Let's not be rude; this is not a technical paper submitted to an academic body, it is a pdf download on a bass amps website explaining to bass players some of the technology they've used which may (or may not) be unique. They don't need a million footnotes, references, et al. The authors are obviously the in-house engineers at tc electronic.

Let's not forget these guys are NO slouches; they are world class LEADERS and innovators in audio, and have been on the cutting edge of high-end audio design since their inception. They have designed many MANY groundbreaking products, including the whole vocal effects processing industry. Rarely if NEVER has their gear taken a back seat to anybody's on the planet, and somehow I doubt if this bass system is going to be their first venture into mediocrity. I think this thing is going to be amazing, personally, let's not blast the company's spokesperson who was kind enough to show up here before we've even heard the thing. After reading this, I'm even more intrigued by the kind of forethought and engineering craftsmanship that has gone into this bass amp.

Just having them in our field is going to raise the whole bar for bass amp manufacturers. A far cry from what we usually get from amp companies; my Eden WT1205 came equipped with rack ears that didn't fit - screw holes in the wrong place - DUHHHH!....and it took them five months to get me new ones...'Oh, we'll get them right out to you"; that's the kind of attention to detail we usually get. Or the same tweeter and crossover in a 1x12" cab that's in an 2x10, a 2x12, a 4x10, a 2x15, an 8x10 or a 4x12...there ya go, bozo, tweet tweet tweet...AND WE'VE PUT UP WITH THIS ********!

:rollno:

I am sure the tc electronic bass system is going to be WORLDS away from that whole defective and misleading mess. No authorship or references on a download on the website is really not a big deal.

I am really looking forward to what they are about to launch. It is already breaking new ground in amp design; and the 'other' guys in the biz we'll be swallowing hard...they're going to HAVE to raise their game now. These guys are serious.

Cheers,
Cameron

Man, you really want to be a tester, don't you, Cameron? ;)

I do agree with you, though. TC makes great stuff that stands up to anyone's.

I just like their stuff. Ever ran a fretess through one of their chorus pedals in stereo? Bliss. Or better yet, the Spacial Expander - mind melting...

Cheers,
Cameron

Or are we friends now, so can I address you as Polly?

LOL! Sure. :smug: :p

Your magazine rocks - I am getting a subscription this morning.

Cool, thanks! :)

BTW - seen this?

Good God! That thing must just rock the whole block.

And the chiropractor bills...

Cheers,

I bet that rig sounds awesome! I have a Titan V-12 on its way to me right now, and I'll be sure to try it with the NV610/215/412, though I do not have a 425.

Tom.

I'm starting to become more interested in this amp the more I read. Darn you TC Electronic and you're over the top advertising that seems to be working on me!! ;)

Definitely well thought out. Just need to hear it to be convinced.

I just noticed, there's no midi, or USB.
I was thinking "Big deal on only 3 presets, I can always use midi to switch settings", but there isn't any. I mistook the remote jack for a midi jack. Kind of surprising there's no automation other than their foot pedal. Unless this remote has external inputs.

That underwhelmed me too. But I bet it'll scare off less bass players* ; }

* as opposed to guys who've played with a lot of electronics and just happen to play bass along with all that

Interesting little amp...

Looks great for the on road top 40 bass player.

I would have dug something like this years ago.

But the other threads are in "Basses" and "Off Topic". I thought it might be helpful in the correct forum.
Besides, talkbass has a somewhat brain dead search limitation that won't let us search for things like "TC Electronic" or "F Bass" because it won't allow "words" under 3 characters in length...

Therefore, even if this is in other threads, it is tedious to find them with talkbass's search engine.

Having the amp name in the thread title is the best way to do it, AJ. Thanks. Now, I need to read up on what everyone's been saying about this intriguing amp.

I've finally read through all 15 pages. Phew!

Cameron, I must say, "VERY well put!"

Having TC Electronics in our back yard is a fantastic thing -- not only for the TC products that we are going to start enjoying now, but for how they will raise the bar for everyone else who hopes to remain competitive.

When I saw the videos, I decided to do more research. Unbelievably, I'm now considering getting a TC Electronics rig, which is saying something since I am COMPLETELY satisfied with my current rigs and haven't been in the market for this kind of gear for years.

If the TC bass gear doesn't take off, I doubt it will be because it doesn't sound good or because the feature set didn't appeal to players... it would be the price point in an economy like this.

I'm attracted to the small form factor, the presets, and the fact that it includes a quality compressor and a tuner, making it even more convenient.

But like most bass players, I already have a tuner and compressor -- in fact I have other rigs as well.

It is a LOT to ask of many players to expect them to leave their Peterson strobe tuners, etc. home just for the convenience of the RH250. A lower price point, even if it was for a limited time offer, would get the momentum started for TC in the bass market I would think.

Yeah, I really wish they could add the capability to do a "within double-quotes literal string" search
