Team Trace Elliott Pt 3

As to the story for the post above: That's my trusty old amp and the new kid. The Peavey stuff is based on a 2005 design by TE and still MOSFET as I understand it - right? General sound, pre-shape filter, graphic eq, usability and performance is very likable. Sounds much like his Granny. The Tube Pre tinny sound and the comp design on the other hand makes me want to bring this to my amp mechanic for a closer inspection and maybe a mod.
Anybody had the same urge?
Cheers, DS

Hi guys

I still have my good old AH250 GP12SMX that I bought new in 1994. Just got a new preamp tube from Electro Harmonix in it.
It`s been sitting on the shelf for a very long time due to sound problems that turned out to be nothing else than a dodgy tube when I recently had a go at it myself.
I forgot how BAD ASS this amp is!

Sorry for crappy pix. I`ll get better ones later on. The original wooden case with the handle on is still around somewhere.

The newest addition is an old 2X15" 1528 cab that had "worn out" speakers. Just happend to have two Eminence Kappa`s with just a couple of hours use laying around. Nice sounding cab indeed!

I also still have both the 1X15" 1153 and the 2X10" 1028H cabs, but will have to snap some pictures of them. My very first Trace cab was a 1818X ( 1X18" and 1X10" ) but sold it due to transportation problems back in the days.

May I join in and have a number as well? :-)

I use preshape 2 (the 'modern' one) most of the time, but I can't really speak to how it does in a mix, aside from what I've recorded here at home (anywhere from a single track to three or four separate tracks, individually recorded)...in those, my lead tracks (for example) are tight and articulate.

On further consideration, I can recall one track that used pre-1 and it was more than a little deep/dark/stuff, but I also had the head's EQ balance cranked all the way over to the low side. Even so, that track had some decent definition to it...if I can find it, I'll put it up on Soundcloud and post a link.

Fellow TE fans, I spied an AH500x at a shop local to me but when I tried to plug it up it produced a lot of nasty noise - didn't even try to run a bass through it. Asking price was $400. :rollno:

Assuming it would take a trip to BAS immediately after purchase, what would you offer? $50-$100? I'm guesstimating $200 for the BAS refurb, incl. shipping.

This would be a perfect backup to my church's rig. I'm more partial to the GP12 pre's with the tube blend and built-in compressor, but having the two separate amps would be nice.

Question - does the pre-shape in the Series 6 sound more like the GP's #1 or #2 (modern) sound? Just curious.

TIA,

Eric
