Tech 21 VT Bass

This seems to be the general tonal vicinity that people on here use it. I can see why...relatively flat except for a boost at 125 hz and an ever so slight scoop of the upper mids. And nobody can take the treble any brighter than 11:00 ;)

And yanno what?...I can see why some guys might use this as an "always on" pedal...It's got that little "sumthin sumthin" that definately adds warmth, a little to heavy "grunt" depending on what you want, and "Character" to your sound...well done...

I found something interesting in the studio recently, the sound from the VT straight into a radial JDI seemed a bit light/weak using the settings I use into my LM2.
I wound the character back toward 8-9 o'clock and wound the drive up to about 11 and the sound fattened right up again.

I don't know how much messing about the sound engineer had done with the eqs (it was a bit hard to communicate ideas) but this sounded better.

I might try to keep this so that FOH gets the fat sound and work on the LM2 to make it sound nice there too.

Yeah so all my studio recording for my bands new CD was bass > VT > Radial JDI and it sounds fab.

Pedal of the future. It's an always-on pedal for me when I'm not given an Ampeg for backline. Which sucks now, because I love the OD settings and I'd have to get a second VT if I want an Ampegger and OD. I'll wait for the programmable version, I guess.

Hey guys! Tried reading through all these posts, but gave up after 22 pages...lol I'm thinking of picking up a VT, but I don't know much about using pedals. The only pedal I currently use is a BBE Sonic Maximizer. I play through a SVT3-Pro into a PR-410HLF. I usually play my '78 P, while alternating a Jag (always passive), and a Geddy Lee. My question is this: from experiences, would this be a good pedal for my set-up? I play in two different bands, one is classic rock with some alt thrown in; the other band is mostly alt/grunge. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Anymore this is how I use my VT-bass.

My main basses are two very modern sounding Schecters modded with Kent Armstrong custom pickups and Aguilar OBP-3 preamps. Clear, punchy lowmid modern fingerstyle tones, but definitely not any kind of vintage like Ampeg sound.

A simple stomp of the VT-bass pedal and I have that Ampeg/SVT meaty sound when/if I need/want it. In my cover-band it ends up being about 50% of the time on or off depending on your preference. And often the on or off varies gig to gig depending on my mood.

I hate to read through 47 pages in this thread to try to get an answer to this question...so please bare with me if it's already been asked...but has anyone had any issues using the VT Bass pedal with "HOT" active Basses?...

Is there something we should know about? I've used it with my active basses and it seems to be fine. They're not especially hot, though.

well...I'm not sure...I'm kind of chasing gremlins...but since I added the VT Bass to my pedal board...I am getting distortion and breakup (and not the good kind) when using my active Basses, and even when the pedal is "off"...I started trouble shooting by first checking cables, Then I noticed that on my Voodoo PP2+, the sag pots had been bumped and were turned way down. I thought that may have been the problem (I was starving a couple of pedals and that was causing it)...but after fixing that, I still had the prob....then I started half-splitting the board down until I isolated it to the VT Bass pedal...with the VT out of the picture, it seems to have cleared up.

I have an important gig this weekend and was going to use it, but not I'm gun shy...

I was getting the same issue with both a Spector and a G&L active Bass, but the problem was much more pronounced with the G&L...

just to check - are there no other gain-increasing pedals before the VT?

JT...get the VT, it's an amazing pedal. As an aside, the very BEST thing you can do for your sound, is to remove that mid sucking Sonic Maximizer. It sounds cool when you are playing solo, but you'll cut through the mix MUCH better without that thing sucking all your midrange out.

There was a compressor in front of the VT, which I had been using for a long time. I tried turning off the Compressor as well and was still getting the noise.

My signal chain was as follows:

tuner -> Octave -> filter -> comp -> VT Bass -> Phaser -> Chorus -> delay -> boost...

I have removed both the VT and the comp...and it seems to have cleared up the problem (bypassed around them). I'm going to tinker with it some more later today (add the comp back, play through the VT bass only, etc) to further investigate...but at this point, I think the culpret is the VT Bass.

Depends on your definition of "hot", but the EMGs in my P bass get along fine with the VT, I just have to adjust the input gain when going back and forth from my passive bass. Maybe I should make it easier and play the P at half volume to match my J- actives don't loose high end when you turn 'em down. Hmmm....

To give you a bit more perspective...To keep unity gain on the board, I have to keep the gain on the VT at about 8:00 (adjusting slightly as I adjust Char and Drive)...

My Spectors have EMG's w/aggie OBP-3 pre's...
