I remember when I had the idea of a sealed 18" cab and wrote about it here on TB... most of the "tech" guys told me that the 15" was "better" in all aspects and that the time for 18" was looong gone, even for PA use.
My 2 cents, at that time and now, are that my 18" cab sounded great with massive lows I never heard from such a relatively small cab with only one woofer! And of course mine wasn't as refined as this one.
I never consider the size of the driver, as such. The first thing is what you want to accomplish sonically, then how large and heavy are you willing to go to get there? The particular 18" Jonathan wanted to use allowed us to hit our design goals in a pretty small box that doesn't weigh too much. I'm a very big fan of this speaker and at the time we couldn't find a 15" speaker (or smaller) that could get us to where we wanted to be from a design perspective. All that to say, it didn't have to be an 18", but that particular 18" helped us reach our design goals
