My 2 cents, at that time and now, are that my 18" cab sounded great with massive lows I never heard from such a relatively small cab with only one woofer! And of course mine wasn't as refined as this one.

I never consider the size of the driver, as such. The first thing is what you want to accomplish sonically, then how large and heavy are you willing to go to get there? The particular 18" Jonathan wanted to use allowed us to hit our design goals in a pretty small box that doesn't weigh too much. I'm a very big fan of this speaker and at the time we couldn't find a 15" speaker (or smaller) that could get us to where we wanted to be from a design perspective. All that to say, it didn't have to be an 18", but that particular 18" helped us reach our design goals :)

This thread has been quiet for some time so I thought I'd post a couple in-progress pics of my sealed 1822. My order went in early last November. Here is the shell being glued up. That's a large driver...

The 1822 has the sensitivity (99dB), power handing (500 watts), and displacement to pull it off for a lot of applications. These points Jonathan mentioned along with Zoomie's reviews are what compelled me to order one of these. I've had it for a couple months but haven't had the chance to gig it live since the places I play have IEM's but have no doubt it would be stellar. It took about 5 or 6 hours playing time for the woofer to break in. The descriptions earlier in this thread about the voicing are accurate. Throw away any pre-conceptions you might have about an 18" cab when you play through one of these. The low end is tight and punchy with no overhang and a nice thickness to it. Voicing is very plug and play with that modern meets vintage tone that is so easy to work with. I have three 800 W Class D heads to play with. The GK MB Fusion 800 is a great match with this cab. Engaging the deep switch but running the bass about 10:30 gave a thick, percussive low end that sounded killer with my Beat Buddy drum machine. Notes down to low B were very consistent and solid. With 99 dB efficiency, 1049 cc of volume displacement, and 400-500 watts into 8 ohms, this cab would be enough to handle most gigs where you might use a 212 or 410. Voicing is even through the mids and has enough high end for slap if needed. There was very little adjustment needed to dial it in. Notes played high up on the neck were well defined and had some meat to them. Those two high-mid drivers match up well with that 18 for a balanced full range sound. Cabinet construction is very solid and that 26"h x 21"w x 15"d profile is easy to work with. The sound, size, and power of this BNA 1822 hit the sweet spot. Well done.

Hey, great to see your review, and glad you are digging the cab! Hope more folks give Mark's stuff a try, especially the sealed cab crowd and the upright guys (upright bass was the initial focus). The 18 is a beautiful sounding driver, and with the mids, definite vintage Hi-Fi goodness!

Glad to hear that it suits you!

Mine still gets first call. It apparently sexy enough that another bass player I work with prefers my rig to 3 other options. I do still have my DuallyT for those times when serious pants-flapping is required. That said, I could just order a second 1822 and add second cab for wall of thunder gigs. And as Much as I adore my beloved DuallyT, I'd bet a bass that a pair of these would crush it.

Still haven't heard anything that I like better.

Not sure how I missed this so long ago! SORRY! So happy you're still enjoying your cab, John! I've sold a few and worked on a couple other design ideas with Jonathan, but that 1822 still hits the sweet spot for what we set out to do, though I still think the 18" woofer is a tough sell for most to get their heads around. Of course, building greenboy cabs still keeps me busy as well. Just got off a month long tour so it's time to make some more sawdust!

Great to see your 1822 out there kicking butt! I look at that cab and say to myself, dangit, wish I'd thought of that!!
