Texting before every Band Rehearsal...why?

Interesting that you say a lot of TB members “don’t rehearse”. That would be unusual for musicians who play with other musicians, unless you are implying that many people on here are just bedroom musicians who obsess about gear but don’t actually play with other pe….. oh wait.

I think where he was going is a lot of people practice on their own and rarely rehearse with their band because they're ... you know ... professionals and tend to make sure people know they think people who bother to rehearse are "less than".

I'll step-up and kick the beehive here:): As you know, a lot of TB folks are sticklers for the difference between "practice" and "rehearse". I get their point but personally don't ever see a need to post about the distinction. The "don't need to rehearse" folks are saying they're busy people, and as accomplished players they don't need to "rehearse", "except to work up new arrangements" or whatever. Cool.

I'm fine with committing to a weekly rehearsal, though not always looking forward to it, I'm almost always GLAD afterward because new things happen. Just last week as we're walking out and some are apologizing for not having done as much prep as they felt they should/should have because "where does the time go..." we were also agreeing that we do a pretty good job winging it on new arrangements and that process IN ITSELF is fun and productive: The creativity (and joy) is enhanced by the spontaneity that comes with being a little bit ill-prepared.

Everyone’s brain is built differently from everyone else’s. Maybe they have a lot going on outside the sole point of interaction you have with them. Maybe they have a busy family and/or a busy job. Maybe they tend to forget what day of the week it is (oh, *Tomorrow* is Thursday! Yay, band practice!). Maybe they have high anxiety around missing dates. Maybe their head is full of bouncing balls all the time and they have a hard time listening to voices drone on. Maybe you mumble. Maybe you don’t make eye contact. Maybe the post-practice communication about next practice isn’t as good as you think it is.

If the worst thing that comes of your relationship with this person is that you have to answer the same damned text every damned week, I’d say you’re ahead of the game. They could instead be narcissistic, egotistic, abusive, substance-abusive, or any one or more of a number of traditionally problematic personality traits. It’s even possible you have one or two of those traits and don’t know it and maybe they tune you out. Nobody here knows.

Send a weekly preemptive text to everyone that band practice is tomorrow just to confirm everyone is still good? Easy fix.

I'm with you on people making the distinction and I'm guilty of it, myself (although, I don't think I've ever done it here; just in my private life).

I am a lover of languages. So, I can be a bit pedantic (according to some people).

I highlighted your last paragraph because I am with you 150% on that sentiment.

Our start-up band has been rehearsing on the same night of the week since we started it. We all know it and we discuss it at the end of each rehearsal. Even so, one member of the band will always text on the day of practice "Are we still practicing tonight?" We're all adults and all should know and remember about band practice. It bugs me that he keeps doing this. Why does it bug me so much and how can I get him to stop doing it?

(I know a lot of you don't rehearse but that isn't the topic here, okay?)
Maybe he has competing priorities.

I wish some of my previous bandmates would communicate that well and verify.

Once you've loaded up a stack and 2 basses and driven 60 miles to practice only to be told "Oh no practice was cancelled today. Didn't John call you?"

No. John didn't call me.
Been there, that's why I always text before rehearsal to reconfirm. Just remembered is time to send my text for our Wednesday practice...

i don’t know why it bugs you so much. As for the annoyance, I’ve put up with petty annoyances from some musician relationships that have spanned decades. And as annoyances go, your’s is relatively mild by comparison. LOL.

It's like when your spouse asks you every morning "Are you SURE we shouldn't get divorced today?" It's so professional to just "make sure" all the time. Especially if you have zero trust in your partner's response.
This is one of the most put of touch with reality posts I've seen on here which is pretty impressive with how out of touch talk bass is on the regular

you should just quit. Seriously.

I'm in a 10-piece that has decided text messages are the way to communicate about everything. So if "hey are we still rehearsing tonight?" is bothering you, consider that I am currently reading about my bandmates' jambalaya recipes (with pictures), and gumbo vs jambalaya talk.

i should add: i don't mind! i like to cook, I love my bandmates, and we have some really interesting conversations! but just some perspective... the easiest thing to do with a text message you don't want is to ignore it.
