The Über-Jay Mark2

Hey Mizio ,
This one has got more it's own character in looks and the P/ups look the biz .You've moved on I think . Stunning and individual.
I hope to start next month.A fretless ,a 4 and a 5 multi build .
G'luck

Thank you guys!

Spino, I feel the same :) good luck with the fretless. I'm likely to strat one f-less fiver too after this ;)

Reverendrally, The regular neck joint usually has 4 or 5 screws. Since this one is about twice as deep, I thought I'd go with 8. The previous build had 6 screws on a similar neck joint and I suppose that's enough. But with 8 screws I could arrange the whole thing in a more personal way ;)

I think some DR Black Beauties would be pretty sweet on that bass! Ive basically spent the entire morning reading this thread and your first Uber Jay; great work! :) I find this one's body to be a bit less of a classic J shape which is fine by me as Im not a huge fan of their looks. Cant wait for some soundclips of those Lace pickups and the next Uber Jay!

Thanks. And you're right, I have further moved away from the classic FJ body shape with this one. The first Ü was already somewhat different in size, horns' shape and contour - plus it was arched top and back. In my quest for a J build that I dig, I have further slimmed down the body, especially the upper horn.

Black DR were on my mind too ;)

Man this is a fantastic looking build. Im quite envious of it and your tallents as a luthier. Loving the Uber series so far and hope theres deffinatly more to come !!! I havent tried the black beauties and probabily wont because i had the red devils and within no time at all, especially when the occasional use of picks comes along, the thin coats of pain flake off and its all over the body, your fingers, and your strings are no longer single shading... hope your still planing on your black and chrome ideas haha.
once again though, beautiful looking piece of art!

I've never really been a fan of black strings, I think the silver ones will accent the pickup's chrome bars well....

Indeed. That's when I'll permanently fit the headstock ferrules. I do think stainless steel strings will add the missing touch to the HS.
I am curious to see what the black strings add to it. But I know it'll be a one off - especially if they worn out fast.

Thank you so much. Yes there are more Üs in the pipe line :) A fiver fretless and the one 4 stringer for Sergio who had to give up on the Eldorado.

Stumbo strikes again:D thank you so much mate! They sound very good. I particularly like the two p-ups together and the bridge p-up. What do you think?

that's really nice.....and the lack of weight has me wanting one...

I've got to say, with 2 kg on my shoulder it feels like playing an acoustic :D thanks.

I'm in Jakarta, city of many talented musicians. I am gonna jam at a friend's gig tonight.... I'll miss Über ;)

im buying a neck though i dont have the equipment to make a neck

would it still count as building a bass

im adding matching headstock though

There are threads on TB about basses being partially built or parts being assembled and finished. A lot of us would be interested. Go on, post them pictures ;)

what do you mean i dont have it yet not til october

yes...when you do have the pix ;)

hey what tool did you use bevel/taper on the side to let the wood underneath show

If you mean the core wood under the top, I did it by hand. Than again, even if you meant another part I still did it by hand ;) that is, rasp, file and sand paper.

Hi again.... I got back a few days ago but only today I could dedicate enough time to finish a few things. so....

I shaped the Tusq nut. I like it, it's easy to work with and once it's done it looks very good. But I had to shave off quite a bit to get to the size and shape I wanted. The picture shows the nut reshaped and a new one for a 5 strings. Quite a difference eh?

The hardware is all black now. I tested a mix of chrome and black - more B than C - just to get to the conclusion that the only chrome should be the saddles and the p-ups, really.
