The All New Julie Slick thread

you know what i would love to know? what in the world is she using to get those monster cool tones...i know she like the SVT and is also using a GK Fusion, but what about for effects...like that distortion and overdrive tone she gets! awesome stuff...

OK, so here's a little entertainment for you while Mr. Pickles awaits his response....

Anyone who has followed this (and the previous) thread might well assume, based on the volume of my fanboy posts, that I must be Julie's PR agent, or at least a long-time friend or something. In fact, prior to this weekend I had only met her in-person once, a couple years ago after a show, and only for a few minutes. So it was great to have the chance to hang with her after the shows on Friday and Saturday and get to know her a little. And it turns out that, in stark contrast to the ShredMonster we see on stage, she is a remarkably sweet, warm, friendly person who seems (and I fear that she will take offense at this) almost like a normal, sane person.

Then, it wasn't until I was driving home on Sunday that it occurred to me: the answer to the eternal burning question, Why does she play barefooted? Now it seems obvious: Shoes somehow act as a kind of magical force-field that function to KEEP THE BEAST BOTTLED-UP INSIDE. She keeps the magic shield in place most of the time, and lowers it only in the safe confines of the stage. As long as she keeps them on, you'd never know. So, perhaps we should all pause for a moment to thank whatever Shoe-God is involved here, because if that beast ever gets out off-stage... well, I shudder to consider the consequences.

More about the shows themselves in a later post, maybe after I get my brain back....

like, OMG...Julie uses a compressor! i've bean thinking of perhaps trying one out, i think i may hunt one down or at least try one out. she gets some awesome tone, mostly from the hands and mind that produce them, but i'm sure a compressor won't hurt...

haha...like, OMG...

I'm pretty sure that Julie will be quick to emphasize the Keeley part of "Keeley compressor." Maybe she can explain what exactly it is about the Keeley that makes it special, but in the meantime I wouldn't run out and grab the first compressor you find in hopes of copping her tone. I mean, OMG! Y'know? :D

Julie - can you share your full signal chain?

Depends on the gig... for Belew (and a lot of other projects) it's:

Custom Lakland Glaub>Keeley 4 Knob Compressor (like, OMG - it's so good)>Zvex Mammoth>Eventide Pitchfactor>GK MB Fusion>NEO 212s (uno or dos)

A lot of it has to do with the bass too... action is set to shred mode.

Now I won't tell you the settings, you're gonna have to figure that out yourselves... :D

Thanks, Julie!

*edit* B/S Duo kicks major arse! Sampling it now; gonna' purchase it tonight.

Julie Slick, that was an amazing show last night; your playing was ferocious. There was so much music coming off the stage all evening, from all "three" bands :). It was also a great pleasure to meet and talk with you afterwards. A fantastic night.

The best came last, however. I listened to your disc on the drive home. Holy cow! I expected it to be good of course, but it blew me away beyond all expectations. What a dazzling piece of work; what a talent you have.

Whenever I have a really great experience at a show, I always have to play when I get home. Not matter how late or how tired. Last night was one of those nights.

Honest to God, that was some of the most adventurous music I have ever heard in my life (last night in Boston). I have been at this for a long time and there were moments when I just couldn't understand what I was hearing. Such fantastic playing from Julie during the Adrian set and then they all came together at the end for a Crimson set and man you gotta believe that Julie and Tony Levin together is some heavy action.

Adrian's guitar playing is sick, demented craziness that should be used to break up kidney stones! He has such a beautiful glow of positivity around him while he unleashes harmonic mayhem. And Julie is so good and brings a real soulfulness that is definitely welcome in the prog realm. It was the first progressive show I've ever been to that didn't feel like a Star Trek convention. I got to say hello after the show and she was super nice.

Aw, thanks boys - lovely to meet you as well! It was a bit of a tough one for us (very boomy stage), but some times you just have to trust the process. I made up for it with extra hair flips :p

Glad you enjoy the CD, Rick! Next one due out Spring 2012... trying to line up some more cool guests...

gag me with a spoon...i've got so see this band play live...i hope it comes to Austin! sounds like a stew of prog rock fever and over top musicianship! like,OMG!!! indeed! as a kid my first intro to Belew was Tom Tom Club...got hooked and went back to Crimson and all the rest...and now Julie with Belew is also as awesome as anything and like, yeah!!!

I was going to ask what you thought of that room. My first time there, and from an audience point of view it was wonderful. Big, but small if you know what I mean. It was like they took a big room like the Orpheum, shrunk it down to bite size, and added a cool lounge in back. Port City Music Hall in Portland Maine and Lupo's at the Strand in Providence have a similar vibe - it's an ideal concert setting imo.

Sound was great, but the Power Trio was loud. I didn't need earplugs for the Stick Men set but I did for yours. Still sounded good though
