the bass and amp you started witz.

1st Owned: 1978 Fretless P-Bass, Acoustic B150 & Fender Bassman 4x12 Cabinet.
Technically, I first had a “rent-to-own” Fender Mustang for a few months or so before the P-Bass.
When I was 16 I got recruited into an established, working band. I had only played upright, but had never really played electric. So I went and rented the Mustang, and bought the rig a week before my 1st gig.
A short while later, my “Bass Mentor” offered me his ’78 Fretless P-Bass for $300.00. But what can a poor boy do? I thought. I got no money, therefor I can’t buy the P-Bass.
But, having a gift for problem solving and creative thinking; I sold the Mustang to a kid down the street (yes, the Mustang I was renting) and bought the P-Bass. (no more questions!)
The band played every Fri & Sat, and the cash was good, so months later, when the rent-to-own contract was up, I just went in and paid it off.
(Now – you kid’s - don’t try this at home!)

I already mentioned the first bass that I owned but a drummer friend loaned me a Kay bass just like this before I actually bought my first. It had some very stiff flats on it. I never played it through an amp so I can't say what it really sounded like. But comfort-wise the Electra Precision I showed earlier was a quite welcome relief to it.

Short scale Mansfield 51 P bass copy with a guitar humbucker for a pickup, and a Darious solid state amp with a 15 and I believe 50watts. These are just pics from the net, but are very close. Picture te bass with a faded chrome guitar humbucker and ya have it
First off, I started on guitar first, later when I was more gainfullly employed, I decided a bass was needed.
The first amp I owned, was my first guitar amp, an Oliver B120 with a single 15" speaker made in the late 60's. Jess Oliver, Father of the Ampeg B15 was the manufacturer. Picked it up for $75 in 1976 to play guitar through. Amp was powered by EL34 tubes volume, bass, middle, treble and a presence control. I used an LPB-1 power booster y Electro Harmonix.
The bass, was an immaculate Ibanez Musician from the late 70's. Bought for peanuts as someone traded it in for a new bass that didn't impress me. 2 pickups, thru neck, a battery and active electronics. Bought around 1985 for $200.00
Still own both, feel very lucky for some purchases made years back, though it is lest costly to buy a playable instrument nowadays.
I started very sensibly with the instrument: a Yamaha RBX374. Came with a free hard case! I still have that case....a Schecter lives there now. The amp I came out swinging and bought a Kustom Groove Bass 310c, which I've cited in a few other posts.
Kinda wish I still had that amp, from time to time, if nothing else that it's curious vertical 3x10" arrangement and Darth Vader like lights and chrome control panel. Plus it packed a wallop.

1984 Ibanez Roadstar II PJ bass copy. The tuners were crap the pickup sort of worked but it played and I learned. I played it through I don't remember the specific model I think it was a crate mbx10 or something like that. It made noise it wasn't loud enough to do anything other than practice and the tone sucked.
An early 70s fender Mustang, stripped and fininshed woodgrain with a set of precision Pups. Wish I could find it today.
The amp... A Plush 1060-s with the 2x15 cabinet. Sad to say it ended it's life with a flashpot inside. looked cool on stage seeing it shoot flames.... but the smell of the pleather burning stunk up the whole ballroom.

My first gear was so bad I can't remember what any of it was. Just know the second: a BB300 and Rolland 100 watt combo with an 18. My gear now is good, despite what others on Talkbass like to claim but thanks for your input.
