i have been watching this thread with interest, and here's why:

this is my first jazz bass, and i think i did pretty well...the workmanship is beautiful and the tone really is just amazing...i have never heard acoustic sustain quite like this...i do have a couple of basses that can really sing and have that piano sound, but this puppy is in a league of it's own (i agree the "sound chamber" has a lot to do with it also)...nice and light and comfy, with a great feel, and obviously 100% pure candy for the eyes...

the electronics are nice too, i was a little concerned about hum at first (when not centered between the pups) until i figured out how to EQ it properly...since this is my first J/J, i wasn't really sure what to expect from the neck pickup as far as tone, but it is YUMMY...you can dial up all sorts of sweetness really easily, and the EQ bands seem very well chosen...

so in summary, ME HAPPY...i got a sweet deal on it also (thanks again edward, if you're out there)

edit: i did a little investigating (tap tap tap) and figgered out the sound chamber is quite large, and on the player's side (opposite side from the electronics cavity)...also lowered the action a bit, and have been enjoying this thing immensely...

p.s. any tips on the care and feeding of the finish? makes me nervous having a bass not smothered in polyurethane...heh

if anyones interested, darrel sent me specs of their jazz bass pickups. apparently he says theyre vintage-voiced and dosnt know which model or year theyre modeled after.

EQ specifications:

Bass + or - 12dB at 80Hz
Middle + or - 8dB at 420 Hz
Treble + or - 15dB at 6.5 KHz
Pickup specifications:

Output level: 5V (R.M.S.) 1 KHz
Output noise: -90dBV
Output impedance: 5K ohm
Input impedance: 1M ohm

and holy $h!t its only $300 for a JJ now! damn! people who are buyin em now are lucky....

So I have been wanting to get a Bass for a while but didn't want to spend a lot for a good bass so if I lost interest I wouldn't be out much money. After going to Guitar Center and listening to their $300 and under basses was very dissapointed.

So yesterday I was checking my local craiglist.com and came across a post by one of the TBC techs that was selling a 4 string JJ for $300. I had never heard of the company before but just looking at the picture I knew I had to see it up close and personal and hear it. So I went down to the shop in downtown LA and met the tech and Jack White, plugged into their bass amp and once I heard it I instantly knew I wanted this bass. When leaving Jack told me if anything goes wrong with the bass to just let him know and it will get fixed, this blew me away and only wish more businesses worked this way.

I took it home and haven't been able to put it down since I am in LOVE with this thing. I can't say enough good things about this bass and the people that I met there. Great people, great bass, great company! I hope they do very well in the future they sure deserve it.

Are these guys still around? I bought an AP-400 single M 4-string bass from them on E-Bay last Sunday (7-2). The next day they thanked me for my purchase and I haven't heard anything from them since. I tried e-mailing Darrell and no response. I tried calling the numbers on their web page and no answer. My credit card has been charged, but that's all that has happened so far. Does anyone know anything? Thanks.

I spoke to Jack today -- they are in the process of (physically) moving their operations and it's gotten them a little backed up. Precarius - while we didn't speak about your specific situation, Jack expressed a great deal of general angst over what's happening with his customers and he is going to do right by everyone who's been inconvenienced.

He's a "stand up guy" ... hang in there with them.

I have to throw in my two cents on an amazing bass. I just got a hold of the MM 5-string and it feels and sounds as good if not better than any stingray I have ever played.

My prediction, in a few years these gems will be moving in the 7-8 hundred range.

Well I got my bass(AP-400 single M 4-string) 7-14 and it is sweet! Came with the free gig bag, the certificate of origin, and tools. This is one of the nicest necks I've played on any price bass. It actually arrived set-up better than my MusicMan Bongo did! I bought it to string it B-E-A-D and other than a little nut filing, everything worked out great. I didn't even have to adjust the truss rod. The 2 band preamp is very quiet and everything is built very well. No way this feels like a $250 bass. I can't wait to see what they come up with when the custom shop opens.

Just sold my Single M fiver. It was sweet but I couldn't justify another bass and I finally concluded, having owned a fiver, that I am a lifelong 4-stringer. Just don't really need five strings for what I do.

But these basses are SEXY AS HELL. I hope to own a TBC jazz bass or even a MM 4 stringer again someday. Just not right now.

Yeah, lucky for me that Tim doesn't do 5ers. I just got it Thursday.
I never play anything but 5ers, but only 34" scale. I absolutely love the neck on this bass!
It's wide and thin front to back. The neck was slightly out of alignment when I got it,
but I adjusted it and tightened the screws and it's perfect now. The preamp is whisper quiet, and has plenty of bass boost.
It sounds like a stingray, but not as agressive. The top end is smoother.
Not only is this a great bass for $300, it would be a great bass for $600!
The only mod I plan to do is to see if I can install a push pull volume pot to switch from parallel to series.
I wish the dual MM basses on ebay were 34" scale, I'd snap one up in a second.

Just bagged a Single M from their eBay store.....$249!!

Damn! From what everyone is saying about these basses, if it is half as good as they say....it is still a great deal. Plus this bass has the 3-piece neck instead of the 1-piece and comes with a gig bag!
