A Marathon Pro. My first bass I bought in the early 90ies from the money I got on my 17th birthday. At that time a low price bass with an average P sound. I still have the picture in my mind, when other musicians were joking about that bass. Go and fu€& yourself! Meanwhile after more than 25 years the sound became rather good. Wood aging matters.
Mine is a dented, battered Yamaha RBX 250 in black (pics when I get back home tomorrow). It was my 17th birthday present from my parents back in the late 90s, so nostalgia plays a part, but it's light (and a dent magnet, so maybe basswood?) and really nails the P bass sound. My introduction to bass playing. Plus its monetary worth is almost nothing, so wouldn't be worth selling anyway
It's currently in need of some TLC, its action is a mile high and it's got a missing volume knob.
Do you have a true keeper?
I tend to keep my basses for a long time. I sold my Rick 4001 that I bought in 1974 in 2008 after I got my P-bass that I still have today. I’ll be hanging on to my Warwick too, until it is bequeathed to my son (also a pro bassist) at my death.
My '78 Stingray...3rd bass I ever owned....rarely play it anymore though

I know in the grand scheme of things it's nothing special, but it's a solid mass of wood and wire that sounds like a million bucks.
Bought it brand new, and this is the longest I've ever owned a bass.

Thirty-five years ago, I bought a used Fender - jazz body and P neck. They had replaced the neck pup, slapped on a Badass bridge, took off the pick guard, sloppily filled the holes, and brush-painted over the clear finish with varnish. Last year I restored it to as original glory as possible. A little heavy, but sounds and plays great. I hope to gig it another decade or two.
My Sub Ray 4. I spent more money than it's worth modding it, so It's not worth selling.
the next bass i buy will be the one i keep forever.
