Like Disenchant said, don't let these thieves steal away your desire to play music. They have taken your instruments...don't let them take your love of music, too.

A suggestion to add to the good ones you've already gotten: If you have any pics of the stolen equipment, take copies of them to the area pawn shops, and give copies to the police. Post the pics on TB, MySpace, and any other forum you belong to, especially your local ones.

I hope and pray that either your equipment will be returned, or that it will be somehow replaced. I feel bad about your wife's jewelry, too. Someone stole all of my good jewelry years back, and there are pieces that I miss, still, 20 years later, because they meant something to me. Some were pieces that had been in the family for years. Some were pieces that sweethearts had given me as a teenager. Some were things my father had purchased for me during more-prosperous times. All were meaningful.

I don't want to give you false hope, but I remember a thread of some years back that ended up with a stolen bass (yes, a Sadowsky) being returned to the rightfull owner. It won't really help you if you can retrieve this thread, at least it will give you back some faith in mankind.

I had the same thing happen about 12 years ago. They were unable to get into the main, upstairs part of the house, but managed to break into the downstairs rooms, one of which was my studio. 2 basses, my GF at the time's guitar, amps, speakers, PA, small lighting rig, computer, even leads. EVERYTHING. Around $12000 worth of gear.
I reported it to the police and their response was, 'Well, you can kiss all that goodbye. No chance of getting that back.' Unfortunatly, they were right (still, a crappy attitude).
I was shattered. For about 3 years I considered, like you, that that was it. I'd never replace it, so gave up.
It wasn't til a mate of mine (R.I.P Matty) bought a bass off a friend of his brothers for peanuts (mates rates) and gave it to me as a belated birthday pressie. That was enough to inspire me to get back into it. I had actually forgotten how much I missed playing. Bit by bit, piece by piece, I built it back up. And haven't looked back since.
My condolences to you and your better half. My heart sincerely goes out to you both. But mate, don't let the bastards (is that considered swearing?) win. Take your time, build it back up. It won't be easy, but giving up will be harder, in the long run.

I'll be sending it to him as soon as I can get it packed, but I need a little help.

I've shipped a few guitars and basses in the past, but I always had empty bass boxes hanging around, now I don't.

So, does anyone know where I can get a box big enough to pack a bass in?

Is there a shipping company that I can bring the bass to, and they'll pack it?

Any help appreciated.

I'll keep an eye out for it, but Montreal's not really a pawn-shoppy city.

I heard a stroy of someone in montreal that had a valuable instrument (I forgot part of the story, including what kind of musical instrument it was) stolen. He told ALL his friends and got them to tell ALL their friends, and it was found rather quickly.

Hopefully it wasn't done by someone he knows. It happens.

In any event, I understand the feeling and quitting music will only make it worse IMO.

It's just that a bass in a case is an odd, big size.

There are so many good people here that I am speechless. I am still holding out hope that my Sadowsky will be found, but know I have to get back it. I've had a packing/shipping store build me a box out of two picture frame style boxes. It worked out well for me, it was a pair that were cut down to make a kind of slip case where the top slides over the bottom half. With one layer of bubblewrap, it fit like a glove. It was then taped around the middle, and the guy who did it had me sign across the tape on each side, to prevent tampering. I think he charged me $10...$4 each for the cartons, and $2 for "special processing", which I happily paid.

I would also call music stores, they frequently have a couple extra guitar/bass shipping cartons.
