The Berg HD212 Thread!!

BUT, I am very intrigued by the HD212. I'm jonesing for the depth of a ported cabinet and loved the sweetness of the HT's tweeter. I tried the WA with a Mesa PH cab and loved the depth, but found that combo a bit dark for my taste. Really want to stick with Bergantino. The NV feels like a bit of overkill with the current band. I'm thinking the HD212 might be a better size and if needed later on could add a second one, running the WA at 500w into 2ohms, which should kill.

Anyone tried a WA with these cabs have a perspective on the tone & volume differences? We play mainly old school country, rock and blues jam band stuff.

I've got a WalkAbout so I'll give that a try when I can. I do think it'd be a great combo, though. The tonal match is almost guaranteed to be good, and the HD212 is relatively efficient, so it should make the most out of the WalkAbout's power.

Yeah, same here regarding the tweeter. I thought Jim himself came on the boards here to clear some of that up along with questions on the rest of his product lines. Can't remember the exact thread though.

As for the WB + HD212, if the HD212 is in fact very close to the ER stack, then I can guarantee it will sound REALLY good with the WB. I use either a silver/black WB or my M6 into my ER stack (and have a third ER cab for those rare occasions where I need to be stoopid loud) and while I love the pure slam of the M6, the WB has been getting the call almost exclusively lately. The semi-para EQ really makes the most of those cabs, and is plenty loud in a rock cover band with an Animal-esque drummer.

Cool - thanks. Can't tell you how excited I am about the WA. A/Bed it against an Ampeg 7pro last weekend and the Peg was dull and lifeless by comparison. And though I haven't tried it through a Berg, yet I can envision the possibilities with the WA!

If the tweeter is in fact different from the old HT, how's the sound of the new one? The older one is the only tweeter I've really loved in a bass cab...

It is definitely a different tweeter than the one used in the original HT112. The current tweeter has a bit more air to it, but the old HT112 had a smoother presentation (to my ear).

Edit: Please note, I am referring to the tweeter in the old HT112, not the HT112ER.

It is my understanding that the HD line exists due to the cost of the neo's making the AE line not profitable for Jim, and the tweeter in the HT112ER being discontinued.

So, the HD line seems to be a merging of the HS line, the AE line and the HT line into a single product line (same tweeter as the HS and AE, and I believe the same (slightly 'revoiced' for a bit of that AE upper mid bite) 10" driver as the HS, and the same 12" driver as the HT112ER).

Makes quite a bit of sense production and cost-wise. Now that the neo prices are down quite a bit, I would hope to see at least a 112/212 revised neo offering from Jim in the near future (I hope). I would doubt we would see a new 410 again due to the cost impact of four neo drivers, versus the single or dual neo cost in the 112/212.

Ken, coming from a manufacturing background/standpoint, I absolutely agree on the consolidation, for lack of a better term. I absolutely love the tweeter that's in my ER's, but just as much like the voicing with the different tweeter in the AE212. Different flavors of great, though I will say that to my ears the ER tweeter (can't speak for the original HT tweeter like Tom can) tends to sound a bit more musical with grittier tones compared to the AE, but purely IMO there of course.

I don't think a day goes by when I don't think about the possibility of swapping my ER stack for a used AE212 though! As of right now, the modularity is winning, but that feeling can change as often as the weather here in New England. At least for right now though, I don't see any reason to change from my ER's to the HD. Kind of a lateral move there.

Perfect! That's exactly the tone I try EQing into these cabs. A smidge more upper mid bite on my HS, and a smidge less upper mids in the AE with the low mids boosted some.

And I think the HD are the best looking of the bunch, too, with that cab covering. Hated the AEs for that when I had those, covers or not, but not terribly fond of the HS line's rat fur either. Also, have to note the sturdy handle on the HD112 (that will be arriving on my doorstep tomorrow). Much better than those rubber gripped handles I remember the HT and IP 112s had.

The HD line seems to be a huge win in my book on almost all fronts. Now, if it was just neo it would be even more perfect(er). But since I only use the smaller cabs to fit in my trunk anyways the schlep is pretty much a non-issue with me.

Tom, if in the course of this tryout you have any thoughts on the sound of this combo in comparison to the sound of the WA/2X Baer ML112 stack, they would be most appreciated.:cool:

There will never be another tweeter equal to the old HT. So smooth, it sounded like a paper cone. As far as tolex, I know some love it, I hate it. The only tolex type covering I ever liked was the old stuff Peavey used back in the 70's. You could take off several layers of skin if you brushed up against it quickly, but it was durable as hell.

Yes that old Peavey covering was like serious sand paper. Great stuff and nowhere to be found.

I just bought it...and love it to death. I also have an El Whappo
jr. and the 212 has just as much of a great tone . Its heavy
but I play bass for the bottom end, not the weight.

The El Whappo Jr. is an awesome cab,love it. The Bergantino
adds just a light more character without hiding the tone of
your bass and amp.

I used them with a GB 1200 and and Glockenkang Heart Rock 2

Sounds really good.

Hi Berg fans,
Have just swapped my AE410 for a brand new HD212. Am powering it with a Shuttle 9.0.
I am blown away by the tonality of this cab, it is as close to perfect as I can imagine. Better I would say than my HT/ER stack that I recently sold (for my tone goals)
Nordy vj4 in passive mode through this rig is sublime!
Big respect to Jim Bergantino, he is a genius.

Your prior cabs are nothing to sneeze at, but I'm with you: this HD212 is the cat's meow! :bassist: :bassist: :bassist: :cool:

Tom,
I couldn't agree more, all of the Bergies that I have owned have been exceptional in their own right. Having said that,the only one that I really regret selling is the HS410, now that cab was just brutal!
Thanks for the tip off by the way, it was your review of the HD212 that got me thinking about it.

I would have thought the HD would sound very close to the HS series cabs. I owned a couple of HS210's and really liked those.

They have their similarities, but definitely 2 different cabs. I owned an hs210 and hd210 at the same time. HD had less of that low mid peak. Kinda falls right between the HS and AE. AE in the low end and HS on the top, kinda sorta. But it's been a while since I've owned the AE, so just going by memory.
